Visit Worcestershire during this spring or summer and you will be amazed by the amount of celebrations, commemorations and special events, surrounding the many anniversaries, in which Worcestershire has played a part in.

Worcestershire is proud to be a part of the national Magna Carta Trail, which is celebrating 800 years since King John sealed the Magna Carta in 1215. King John is buried in Worcester Cathedral, and there are many events, as well as an exhibition portraying this important part in history. Evesham will be hosting a two week long Festival commemorating 750 years since Simon de Montfort fell at the Battle of Evesham, which will include a weekend of medieval festivities. Fort Royal Park in Worcester city centre will be 100 years old, with various events at The Commandery and in the Park, to commemorate the lives that were lost in the English Civil War.

Shelsley Walsh, the oldest motorsport track in the world is celebrating 110 years of hill climb events in the beautiful Teme Valley and Worcestershire County Cricket Club is celebrating 150 years of cricket at New Road. Britain’s premier steam railway, which meanders from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth celebrates its Golden Anniversary, as does The Swan Theatre, home to the Worcester city arts and entertainment scene.

If you enjoy the great outdoors and are looking forward to some great walks and bike rides alongside some celebratory events, then visit the county during 2015 to celebrate 200 years since the opening of the Birmingham to Worcester canal, as just one of the many outdoor activities on offer.

Worcester is a beautiful Cathedral and University city with a wealth of history, heritage, sports and culture. So whether visiting with friends, a family – young or old, there really is something for everyone.

The city is best known for its magnificent Cathedral but is also famous for the world renowned Worcester Porcelain, the piquant Worcestershire Sauce and the most picturesque cricket ground in the country. To really appreciate the unique architecture of the city, brave the 235 steps of the Cathedral Tower.

Take a stroll around the city centre and explore The Commandery to learn about our important role in the English Civil War. See a contemporary exhibition at the City Art Gallery and admire the half-timbered buildings in Friar Street. These include Greyfriar’s House & Garden and the 500 year old Tudor House. For the keen shopper, Worcester boasts a unique shopping experience with a mix of the very best High Street names; House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, Joules, Jack Wills and an unrivalled selection of independent shops and boutiques.

2015 is set to be a year full of fantastic celebrations, commemorations and events in Worcester. Cricket has been played at New Road for 150 years, productions have been performed for 50 years at the Swan Theatre, barges have been sailing from Worcester to Birmingham for 200 years and the famous Magna Carta was agreed 800 years ago. The new University Arena will also be hosting the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships.

RUN BIKE RUN!Back for a second year, the City of Worcester will welcome thousands to the streets to take part in the Worcester City 10K, Run Bike Run and Junior Runs, Sunday September 20th. As part of the city’s 2015 ’50 days of sport’, organisers are looking to build on the huge success of last year’s events. 2014 saw marathon legend Paula Radcliffe and her daughter Isla join thousands of others along its picturesque route all challenging themselves for many different reasons. Race Director Steve Cram and the Events of the North team are thrilled to be bringing the Worcester City 10K and Run Bike Run back with the support of the city council for another year.

“We were delighted with how everything went last year. Working closely with Worcester City Council, we staged three races that were a pleasure to be involved in as either participant or supporter. Worcester offers a stunning backdrop and the enthusiasm generated on the day by everyone was great to see. After such a positive experience in 2014, we are very excited about the potential to grow the events this year, and make them even better. I look forward to cheering everyone along the route on 20th September.” Steve Cram CBE.

Entries open for this year’s event on 19th February and taking part couldn’t be easier. Just log on to www.worcestercityrun.com and pick the event for you, there’s something for everyone! Challenge yourself and be part of the Worcester 50 days of Sport celebration!

Built within the Royal Feckenham Forest, covering large parts of west Worcestershire, Redditch benefits from a mix of old and new. Bordesley Abbey Visitor Centre, set along the ruins of a medieval Cistercian Abbey which gave the town it’s name (The Red Dyche) sits nicely next to Forge Mill - a needle museum, showing a vivid illustration of how once upon a time, 90 per cent of the world’s needles were produced in the town. The Visitor Centre has a large pleasant grassed area, a park with picnic tables and children’s play area.

Arrow Valley Park is one of two National Green Flag parks in Redditch and covers over 900 acres. It’s hard to believe you’re in an urban environment when walking or cycling around this vast open space. The focal point is the Visitor Centre, situated with lakeside panoramic views, which you can enjoy from the indoor cafe or outside picnic tables. An extensive playground area with slides, climbing nets, swings and frames feature in this multi-level, state of the art play area. The free outside gym completes this most special attraction.

As well as attractions, cafes and restaurants, you will find plenty to do at places like The Transport Museum at Wythall where you will find a collection of buses and battery electric vehicles such as electric bread and milk floats, plus a miniature steam railway that operates on event days. Along with ‘Kids Kabin’ activity and picnic area’s, cafe and souvenir shop you are sure to have a great day out.

Avoncroft Open Air Museum cares for a large collection of several thousand objects that reflect the life and work that went on within buildings and structures of Historic Buildings. As well as events through the year it houses an award winning Edwardian Tea Room.

Over in Bewdley, and set in a historic

Butchers Shambles, the fascinating displays at Bewdley Museum give an insight into the trades and crafts of the Wyre Forest  area in a delightful setting. With hands-on activities and regular craft demonstrations there’s plenty to see and do for the whole family.  Make sure you also take time for a well-earned break in the café set within attractive walled gardens.

With a stroll around the delightful museum grounds and the adjoining Jubilee Gardens, it’s the perfect way to relax and unwind.

The Worcestershire County Museum, near both Kidderminster and Stourport, is housed in historic Hartlebury Castle. Whether you are looking for a chance to learn about everything from Romans to Regency, a peaceful stroll through nature

or just a nice cup of tea and a cake the Museum offers plenty for a day out.

Severn Valley Railway operates mainly steam-hauled passenger trains along the beautiful Severn Valley between Kidderminster, Bewdley and Bridgnorth, about 16 miles. Shops, refreshments and pubs are available in and around most stops and be sure to include a visit to the “Engine House” at Highley to complete your visit.

Severn Valley Railway hosts regular events and themed weekends throughout the year as does the country’s only museum dedicated to carpet manufacturing. The Museum of Carpet, in the historic Stour Vale Mill is Kidderminster’s living legacy to more than 300 years of carpet heritage.

GETTING BACK TO NATURE Close to Bromsgrove you will find the Clent and the Walton Hills, with just under a million people visiting each year. The Clent Hills are graced with several classically inspired architectural works from about the 1750s. Most of them are in the private grounds of 18th Century Hagley Hall, which is open to the public.

Bewdley is the gateway to the ancient Forest of Wyre, featuring a cafe and Discovery Centre. Its surrounding woodlands are fantastic places to enjoy the fresh air and have fun outdoors. There is something for everyone all year round, from walking and family cycling to Go Ape - High Wire adventure.

Arley Arboretum near Kidderminster is another natural beauty - discover a tranquil wonderland of rare and ancient trees, exquisite walled gardens and panoramic views.

British Asparagus Festival in the Vale of Evesham

One of Wychavon District Council’s longest-serving and highly regarded employees, Angela Tidmarsh, has been nominated for VisitEngland’s Tourism Superstar supported by the Daily Mirror – a prestigious accolade that honours individuals from the tourism sector who go above and beyond the call of duty time and time again.

Angela, who joined Wychavon District Council in 1976, has served as Tourism Officer for 32 years, becoming an integral part of the development of tourism across the district. In her time with the Council she has been instrumental in the creation of events right across the Vale of Evesham, Broadway, Droitwich Spa and Pershore. Her most notable achievements can be seen in the form of the Pershore Plum Festival, the British Asparagus Festival and the Spring Blossom Trail. Since its creation in 1982, the Blossom Trail – which is the only one of its kind in the country - has expanded from an eight mile journey showcasing a handful of local growers to a 50-mile AA signposted route, linking the honey-coloured Cotswolds to the picturesque Vale of Evesham.

Speaking on her nomination, Angela said: “When I discovered I’d been nominated for this award I was honoured. Now I’ve reached the shortlist of ten, I’m completely overwhelmed and “almost” speechless! To be rewarded in this way for doing something that I enjoy and that benefits and brings joy to so many is wonderful.  My goal now is to do well in the awards as a way of saying thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me over the years.”

www.wychavon.gov.uk/tourism

You know that spring has sprung when those famous yellow AA signs appear to guide blossom spotters through the country’s most famous Blossom Trail - now in its 32nd year and taking in almost 50 miles of idyllic Worcestershire countryside.

There are so many ways to enjoy this  magical natural attraction.  Not only can you travel the trail by car, you can also enjoy a  fabulous day out on one of the springtime Vale Coach Tours.

Operated by Dudleys Coaches Ltd on the 14th and 21st April 2015, with pick up points throughout the County, this value for money tour with your very own tour guide allows you to experience the best of the Vale and the spring blossom.

For those who prefer ‘the great outdoors’ without engines - why not cycle the route and join the Blossom Trail Bikeaway in aid of St John Ambulance. This event will take place on Sunday  19th April from Raphaels’ Restaurant (Hampton Ferry) in Evesham. There is a choice of four routes, 11, 16, 27 and 50 miles on offer - there is certainly something for all ages and capabilities.

If walking is more your style - then you should enjoy one of the Blossom Trail Walks. A series of three walks designed with springtime blossom in mind, but they can be appreciated at any time during the year.

For your free colour Blossom Trail pack and more information contact Angela Tidmarsh on 01386 565373 or via email [email protected]

One of the great things about our green and pleasant land is the wonderful array of flora and fauna that exists in every corner. The Malvern Hills is no exception, being classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area hosts a wide selection of experiences from the rugged common landscape of the Malvern Hills and Teme Valley to managed commercial gardens and

private gems that are opened up at certain times of the year under the National Gardens Scheme.

The area also plays host to one of the UK’s leading gardening events. RHS Malvern Spring Festival (7-10 May 2015) at the Three Counties Showground which attracts leading gardening experts and designers as well as providing a platform for local growers.

At the other end of the district outside Tenbury there is Burford House Gardens, home to one of the UK’s largest alpine collections. You can walk through the gardens and along the banks of the River Teme which provides views across to Tenbury and beyond. Just a short distance away in Berrington Court is the business of Frank P Matthews Trees For Life, where you will find a wide selection of fruit trees and shrubs. Tenbury is famous for its apples and association with the brewing industry. Frank P Matthews organise the annual display of over 200 varieties of apples and fruit at the annual Applefest that takes place in Tenbury every October.

There are many public parks and commons located throughout the district. In Great Malvern, Priory Park is filled with beautiful trees which surround a duck pond. There is also a bandstand that plays host to brass band concerts throughout the summer months. Rose Bank Gardens lies on the edge of the Malvern Hills overlooking Great Malvern. The garden has terraced pathways, Victorian gas lamps and a fine statue of two buzzards. It is often seen as the gateway to the hills with 99 steps leading to St Anne’s Well and the Malvern Hills.

Victoria Park makes an ideal venue to relax after a visit to the Morgan Motor Works which is situated across the road from the park. The Burgage and Palmers Meadow in Tenbury play host to many events such as the Applefest and Mistletoe Festival. In Upton you can enjoy a riverside walk across the ancient meadows known as the ‘Ham’ which is said to have been available to commoners for farming and grazing for over 1000 years. Upton has also been a finalist in the RHS Britain in Bloom Awards.

Come stay and relax in our beautiful floral district. There are a host of wonderful B&B’s, many of which have fantastic gardens.

The area has many large scale gardens such as Croome Park which was designed in the 18th Century by “Capability” Brown and is now owned by the National Trust. The grounds that host a rotunda and an Aero Museum are surrounded by a large lake with shrubberies and follies dotted around. Another gem is Witley Court, built in the 1850’s was once one of England’s great country houses which sadly were destroyed by fire in the 1930’s. The remains of the house still exist as do the spectacular restored fountains and gardens.

LIBERTY & DEMOCRACY

King John at Worcester Cathedral

2015 A YEAR OF LIBERTY AND DEMOCRACY AT THE COMMANDERYAs a tribute to the Magna Carta anniversary, Worcester’s historic Commandery is staging a year-long programme of events to celebrate Worcester’s key role in the history of England’s liberty and democracy.

Worcester plays a special part in the story of England’s development of parliament and constitutional rights and has played host to several key points in history including the first and last battles of the English Civil War and the visit to Worcester of future American Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in

1786, who were keen to see where the constitutional liberties of Great Britain were bloodily fought for. The Commandery was the Royalist Headquarters during the Battle of Worcester and this story is told throughout the building.

The Commandery’s ‘Year of Liberty and Democracy’ includes historic re-enactments, national debates and local celebrations. Join us for the first major event on Saturday 30th May celebrating Oak Apple Day.

www.museumsworcestershire.org.uk

2015 marks a number of anniversaries, including the significant 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. The original charter was sealed by King John at Runnymede on 15th June 1215. Magna Carta has influenced constitutional thinking, Human Rights and the Rule of Law in English society, limiting authoritarian rule and has been a foundation for liberty worldwide.

Some of King John’s favourite hunting grounds were in Worcestershire and he visited Worcester Cathedral often to worship at the shrine of St Wulfstan. Just before his death at Newark in October 1216 John declared in his Will that he should be buried at Worcester Cathedral. His tomb lies in front of the spectacular High Altar and the effigy on his tomb is unique – it is a life like image of him and is the oldest Royal effigy in England.

There is a varied programme of events at Worcester Cathedral during 2015 around King John, Magna Carta and Liberty. These include an exhibition from 6th March, talks for booked groups by King John’s tomb, an evening lecture ‘Bad King John? Did he do good at the end? The relevance of Magna Carta in 21st Century’. The programme also includes a series of LiberTea talks (with tea and cake!) on the subjects of Suffragettes, the Battle of Evesham and Slavery. From September 2015, relics from King John’s tomb including his thumb bone and fragments of his clothing, as well as his Will, can also be viewed by appointment in the Cathedral’s medieval  library. Call Worcester Cathedral Chapter Office on 01905 732900 for more information.

These include contemporary art installations, a barons’ trail, musical performances, theatre (especially commissioned by Salisbury Playhouse), a wide range of family activities and a flower festival. Trowbridge, home of one of the 25 barons, will also be a focal point for activities.

1215, King John was confronted

King John is said to have loved Windsor Castle

“above all others” a

At Christmas 1

213 he ordered a supply of 15,000

herrings, 3,000 cap

ons, 1,000 salted eels, 400 pig

heads, 100 pounds of almonds, 20 pounds of white

bread, spices, 500 pounds of wax, 1,000 yards of

cloth for napkins, 20 large cas

ks of good wine for

his household and 4 casks of the best

for himself.

The barons assembled on the 10th

June 1215 and meetings took place

daily with the King’s b

ase at Windsor

Castle. King John rode from Windsor

to Runnymede on 15th June 1215 –

the day agreement was fi

A visit to Windsor Castle is a m

With so many anniversaries happening this year, we must not overlook the fact that on 29th June 2015, Fort Royal Park in Worcester celebrates its centenary as a park. In 1651, when Charles Stuart and his mainly Scottish Royalist army arrived in Worcester on 22nd August, they immediately set about carving Green Hill into a hill fort, or sconce, to prevent the Parliamentary army of Oliver Cromwell placing their artillery there. The hill was re-named Fort Royal and Charles realised how important it was in defending the city and placed about 3,000 men from his army of 15,000 within the Fort to defend it.

In 1786 John Adams, the USA Ambassador in London and his good friend Thomas Jefferson, who held the same post in Paris, were on a tour of England studying the General Election procedures, gardens and history (Adams was to become the second President of the USA in 1797 and Jefferson the third in 1801). On 8th April they visited Worcester as they were particularly interested in the Civil War, which they regarded as the English Revolution.

They were amazed that the people of Worcester knew nothing about Worcester’s importance in the Civil War, being the site of the first and last battles. Adams addressed a crowd at Fort Royal and said to them:

“And do Englishmen so soon forget the ground where liberty was fought for? Tell your neighbours and your children that this is holy ground, much holier than that on which your churches stand. All England should come in pilgrimage to this hill once a year.”

The Battle of Worcester Society and The Friends of Commandery Gardens and Fort Royal Park acknowledge the words of John Adams and go in pilgrimage to that hill once a year, on the anniversary of the 3rd September battle to pay homage with a Drumhead Service on the ground where liberty was fought for. There is now a  fantastic new playground  in Fort Royal Park, containing innovative play equipment designed for a range of age groups.

The first area for younger children replicates a civil war period farm homestead and includes swings, a slide and small pieces of play equipment for climbing and role play.

100 YEARS OF FORT ROYAL PARK

The Battle of Evesham took place on 4th August 1265 between Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester and King Henry III’s son Prince Edward. It was political, personal and bloody, and marked the tragic end of de Montfort, but not before he set up the first Parliament, which is still the template for democratic states across the world.

Worcestershire is featured on the Heart of England Magna Carta Trail. Trail 6 starts in Oxford and takes a scenic journey through the Cotswolds to Evesham, then onto Worcester city and Hereford.

Celebrating the Chateau Impney’s Rich Motorsport HistoryA new motorsport event is speeding into the grounds of the Chateau Impney Hotel and Exhibition Centre this summer. The Chateau Impney Hill Climb, is a celebration of the hotel’s rich motoring heritage. The event will take place on 11th and 12th July 2015, and is set to become one of the biggest events on the town calendar.

From 1957 to 1967, Chateau Impney played host to a series of speed trials, attracting some of the best known hill climb competitors and thousands of thrill-seeking spectators.

Catering for pre-1967 cars, the 2015 event will see 200 competitors put to the test on a longer, more challenging track. Almost double the length the course used to be in the sprint events of the 1950’s and the 1960’s, the organisers believe it to be one of the most challenging and unique in the country.

International Home of Sport

The 2015 European Wheelchair Basketball Championships will take place in the city of Worcester from the 28th August to 6th September. This will be not only the biggest wheelchair sporting event in Europe, but also the biggest sports event of any type in the Midlands for 2015.

The city will welcome 450 officials and participants who will compete at the iconic University of Worcester Arena for the sole European qualification places for the Rio Paralympics in 2016.

This UK Sport ‘Gold Series’ will give thousands of people within the region the opportunity to engage in the event as volunteers, sponsors and spectators. There will be an exciting range of conferences, off court activities and demonstrations for a wide ranging audience. This is a fantastic opportunity to place Worcestershire ‘on the map’ as an inclusive and major international home for sport.

The Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb is one of Worcestershire’s best kept secrets. Located just outside Martley and nestled in the Teme Valley fifteen minutes from the centre of Worcester, lies the world’s oldest motor sport venue still running on its original course.

Throughout the summer, high octane action takes place with rounds of the MSA British Hill Climb Championship in June and August, with cars reaching speeds of up to 140mph on the 1000 yard course. The top competitors aim for the hill record of 22.58 seconds, providing a thrilling day out.

If you are into vintage cars, the 5th July provides great entertainment with cars ranging from Bugatti to Aston Martin and ERA, and the ever spectacular Napier Bentley always wows the crowd as it smokes away from the line.

Classic Nostalgia on the 18th and 19th July is fun for all the family with action on the track and in the air, plus period entertainment in The Courtyard, with live music and dancing.

There is something for everyone with six race meetings a year for both classic and modern, plus the very popular and free to attend Breakfast Clubs.

DISCOVER A BEST KEPT SECRET

2014 was a year of huge achievement for the club, with Director of Cricket and county favourite, Steve Rhodes, who played for the club for 20 years before moving into his current role nearly 10 years ago, stewarding the team back to the top flight of domestic county cricket by securing promotion from Division Two of the LV= County Championship.

It seems fitting that the county, which was formerly known as ‘Fostershire’ in the early 20th century, will be part of the County Championship’s elite division for their 150th year, especially given their rich history and former successes.

Crowds at the idyllic and picturesque New Road have been treated to successes over the years. From the golden era of five County Championship titles – and many more trophies and Lord’s finals – across a 25 year period encapsulating the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, to last seasons promotion, New Road has played host to many historic moments under the watchful eye of the Glovers Needle and the instantly recognisable Worcester Cathedral.

So, whether it is a lazy afternoon spent watching the team battle it out in top tier of the four-day Championship, a night with friends watching the Rapids in the explosive, unpredictable and wholly absorbing T20 campaign, or taking part in one of the many non-cricketing events that the club hold, one thing is certain, Worcestershire County Cricket Club are ensuring that their 150th year will build on the traditions and success that makes the club a sporting institution to savour.

Bring your own picnic for a Midnight Feast in the famous Guesten Hall with its beautiful 14th century roof. Lovells Vineyard, in Welland, sits between the glorious Malvern Hills and the riverside town of Upton upon Severn.  The vineyard produces award-winning dry whites, subtle rosés and sparkling pink wines. The wines are named after the local composer, the great Sir Edward Elgar. Lovells Vineyard was planted in 2010 while the two smaller vineyards at Tiltridge Vineyard were planted over twenty years ago.  Lovells have eight different varieties of vines from Seyval Blanc to Pinot Noir, all cultivated with meticulous care. The small family-run, boutique vineyard is open between 11am and 4pm weekdays throughout the season (Mid-May to end of October). Group tours are available by appointment, but anybody dropping into the vineyard will be welcome to wander among the vines, find out a little about English wine and enjoy a quiet drink in one of our lovely outside spaces and maybe pick up a bottle of local wine to take home.

200 YEARS OF NAVIGATIONThe Worcester & Birmingham Canal was finally opened to traffic as a through route from Birmingham to Worcester in December 1815. The building of the canal had stalled for a number of years having reached Tardebigge from Birmingham on one level. It took another six years to work out how to get round the Tardebigge Hill and down to the River Severn.

The canal itself starts at the River Severn in Worcester. After passing through the city it traverses fine, un-spoilt, Worcestershire countryside, climbs the famous Tardebigge flight of 30 locks up onto the Birmingham plateau, and eventually enters the one mile long Kings Norton Tunnel.

To celebrate the 200 years of navigation, the Worcester- Birmingham & Droitwich Canals Society are leading in organising a number of events through the year and it is a wonderful excuse to come and visit Worcestershire.

The celebrations start with the St Richard’s Festival on Friday 1st May to Monday 4th May, which will be held in Vines Park, Droitwich Spa. There will be a boat gathering with entertainment and a real ale bar throughout the weekend. A classic car rally will be held on the Saturday and Sunday. A Farmers’ Market will be taking place in the High Street on Saturday and the now famous St Richard’s Duck

Race on Monday afternoon. Boat trips will be available to the public out of Vines Park and Sunday will see the arrival of the only Severn Trow in existence.

A Beer and Boat Festival based in and around Alvechurch Marina, on Friday 15th May to Sunday 17th May, will have family entertainment including Morris Dancers and Appellation Dancers throughout the weekend plus over 30 beers to help quench the thirst.

Friday 12th June to Sunday 14th June we will be celebrating at the Worcester Water Festival based in and around Lansdowne Park, Worcester. This will be a free community event again with family entertainment and a real ale bar. The emphasis on entertainment will be to showcase local bands.

THE MALVERN MUNCH! FOOD WALK

This year Malvern Walking Festival has a record 44 walks over the nine days of the Festival. There is a choice of five different walks each day, four on the final Sunday. Walkers who look forward to the longer walks will be able to join in the three day “Wyche Way” walk from Weobley in Hereford back to Malvern, then immediately following that, by joining the new, for 2015, six-day “Discovery Walk” -  starting at Andoversford in the Cotswolds, back to Malvern. As usual, in both cases transport is included from/to Malvern to each day’s start and finish point.  Old favourites include the Malvern Hills End-to-End as well as the more demanding End-to-End-&-Back.  The always popular visit to Madresfield Estate is also on again this year. There is also a two day walk in the Teme Valley.

There are a couple of easy strolls around Great Malvern, one covering Malvern’s famous Water Cure, the second visiting many of Malvern’s Blue and Green plaque sites. Another walk takes you around the hills exploring Malvern’s musical and literary connections.

Other walks cover natural history, geology and local history. One two-part walk involves a train journey though the mile long railway tunnel through the Malvern Hills.

THE ARTS

For England’s greatest composer, Sir Edward Elgar, inspiration came anywhere and everywhere as he famously once said: “My idea is that there is music in the air. Music all around us, the world is full of it and you simply take as much as you require!”

In celebration of Elgar’s life and music the Elgar Birthplace Museum is this year launching ‘Inspired by Elgar’ an open painting competition. Artists from Worcestershire and beyond are invited to release their creative juices and submit work based on a range of themes which played an important part in the composer’s life.

These themes include; music, landscape, hobbies, buildings, friends and travel. They

offer huge opportunities for subject matter as Elgar’s life was both fascinating and full. Among his many and varied hobbies, he particularly loved golf and cycling.  His life spanned a period of great technological change. As a boy he travelled in his father’s pony and trap, and the year before he died took an aeroplane flight.  Places meant a great deal to him, and new landscapes brought fresh inspiration - perhaps one of the reasons he moved home more than 20 times.  And friends were of huge importance to Elgar as he showed us with his wonderful work The Enigma Variations.

A National Trust mansion near Pershore is set to capture the nation’s attention by using street art to interpret its historical characters on a colossal scale.

40 foot high artwork at Croome Court, designed and created by street artists and inspired by the estate’s colourful past, is a brand new approach to presenting art and heritage at a country estate.

Croome have just begun an 18 month Heritage Lottery funded repair to the house with a scaffold structure surrounding the building, and Croome’s Creative Director Tom Bennett wanted to do something different on the temporary wrap which is on the north side of the house. Croome decided to commission experienced and emerging street artists to create an eye-catching and attention grabbing design which was deeply rooted in Croome’s history.

THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM BROADWAY IS TO HOLD AN EXHIBITION OF EYE-CATCHING SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY EMBROIDERY FROM THE FELLER AND ASHMOLEAN COLLECTIONS FROM SATURDAY 14TH FEBRUARY TO SUNDAY 7TH JUNE 2015.

Colourful raised and flat work pictorial panels, fine white and polychrome samplers and dress accessories will be included in the exhibition. The embroideries were created through individual use of stitches, colourful silks, metal threads, pearls and semi- precious stones.

The exhibition also includes a remarkable casket that was formerly in the collection of HRH The Princess Margaret. It is covered with beautifully worked embroidered panels depicting stories from Ovid’s  Metamorphoses.

The embroideries illustrate the themes and concerns which occupied the minds of the young women making them. They often depict biblical stories at a time when religious issues, including the use of images, aroused great controversy.

Gheluvelt Park is arguably Worcester’s finest park, and was built in 1922 in honour of those lost in the First World War. It has two distinct areas - a formal park to the  east and an informal area managed for wildlife conservation to the west, next to the River Severn.A newly refitted play area and Splashpad, a popular water play feature, is open daily in summer. It includes; a rock pool, tap fountain, foaming jet sprays and a water tunnel. There are also tennis courts, outdoor table tennis, gym equipment and a bandstand, which hosts regular performances.

The informal park was created in 2004, with the removal of Barbourne Waterworks. The remaining Victorian pump house was extensively refurbished to become The Pump House Environment Centre, managed by environmental charity the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust. Its aim is to educate and encourage visitors in the many ways of saving the planet.

The building demonstrates sustainable technologies and building materials used in its refurbishment, including solar arrays, wind turbines, ground source energy, sheep’s wool insulation, and rainwater harvesting systems, used to flush the toilets.

Visitors can watch birds in the wildlife garden or through dedicated ‘birdcams’ whilst enjoying locally sourced, organic and Fair Trade goods in the Pump House Eco Cafe. The Eco Shop sells environmentally friendly household and personal cleaning products. There is a children’s indoor play area and an Eco Library, as well as seating available in the gardens.

Tucked away beneath Worcestershire’s famous Malvern Hills, Stanbrook Abbey is a venue packed full of extraordinary features that are guaranteed to impress and amaze you!Set within 22 acres of stunning grounds which are themselves surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty, an extensive but sympathetic refurbishment has made the Abbey the amazing venue it is today. The former convent is constructed of red brick, with stone dressings and Gothic windows. Together with the abbey church, the convent was designed by Edward Welby Pugin, son of the renowned 18th century architect Augustus Pugin. Stanbrook Abbey’s extensive gardens and picturesque grounds include a beautiful, lavender-filled butterfly garden and weeping willows trailing into a private lake.

Not to be outdone, the Abbey’s interior will take your breath away. Experience the Callow Great Hall with its ornate vaulted ceiling and mesmerising stained glass windows, or relax to the sound of the grand piano in the Piano Lounge.

On 1st March 2015, 52 bedroom doors will open to reveal the most charismatic bedroom suites the county has ever seen. Previously nun’s cells, the bedrooms now play host to king size beds framed by cloister inspired bedsteads, power steam showers and free standing baths ready to relax and unwind in. As well as the usual features such as flat screen TVs and luxury amenities, Stanbrook pride themselves on the quirky touches in each individually styled bedroom; from original word carvings to private balconies, each nook and cranny is just waiting to be explored.

GARDENSEXPERIENCE ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S GREAT GARDENSHidcote is an arts and crafts garden in the north Cotswolds, a stone’s throw from Broadway, Evesham and Stratford-upon-Avon. Created by the talented American horticulturist, Major Lawrence Johnston its colourful and intricately designed outdoor ‘rooms’, are always full of surprises. Explore the maze of narrow paved pathways and discover secret gardens, magnificent vistas and plants that burst with colour. Many of the plants found growing in the garden were collected from Johnston’s many plant hunting trips to far away places. It’s the perfect place if you’re in need of gardening inspiration.

NESTLING JUST TWO MILES FROM WORCESTER ARE THE MUCH UNDERSTATED GARDENS OF SPETCHLEY PARK. SET UP AS A CHARITY IN 1997, SPETCHLEY GARDENS PROVIDE THIRTY ACRES OF PEACEFUL TRANQUILLITY WHERE EVERY ASPECT OF GARDENING CAN BE SEEN AND ENJOYED. Spetchley is a garden for all tastes, the gardens are not a formal paradise of neatly manicured lawns or beds, but rather a wondrous display of plants, shrubs and trees, woven into a garden of many rooms and vistas, all with a fascinating story to tell.

Spetchley was one of the first gardens to open its gates to visitors under the National Garden Scheme over seventy years ago and has recently received funding to improve visitor access, preserve Spetchley’s unique heritage as well to give visitors the opportunity to learn, understand and engage with Spetchley’s past, present and future.

2015 is a very big year as the Welcome Centre, shop and new car park will open and works begin on the cart shed, stage coach and lake that will help to make Spetchley one of Worcestershire’s finest historical attractions.

HOME OF GARDENS www.visitworcestershire.org

ENGAGE WITH SPETCHLEY’S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

The gardens have been divided into twelve themes including, ‘mythology’, ’countries of the world’ and ‘fantasy and culture’. The gardens include, beautifully planted shrubs, trees and flowers with added extras to portray scenes from Africa to Italy, Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland.

The pirate ship is a favourite along with the Medusa pool complete with fog and snakes. The resident three metre high dragon, Edwina, overlooks her nest and puffs out smoke over the visitors.

No visit would be complete without stopping at the superb ‘Phileas Fogg’ tea room, which provides a wide range of food from light snacks, homemade scrumptious cakes to delicious lunches, all prepared on site using mostly home grown produce.

BRAND NEW RALPH COURT GARDENS

THE ‘ART’ OF GARDENING!2015 marks the tenth anniversary of the Jinney Ring Garden Sculpture Trail and the popular Craft Centre, situated between Droitwich and Bromsgrove.

The Trail is a great opportunity for Jinney Ring to display larger works of art than they would normally have room for inside their two hundred year old barn buildings.

The large attractive gardens situated at the back of the Centre allow artists scope to display their art in such a way as to give visitors a better idea of how they look in an outside setting, contrasting with the flora and fauna and against the terrific views of the Malvern Hills. Artists come from far and wide to exhibit their art here, and it also gives the twelve craft and designer artists who are based at the Centre a chance to get outside too!

www.jinneyring.co.uk

Ralph Court Gardens is a truly inspirational three acre garden overlooking the Malvern Hills. The gardens have been carefully developed over the last ten years and are located in the grounds of a gothic rectory, offering an exciting and enjoyable experience to all ages. The attraction is ramped and completely accessible to wheelchair users.
