Congratulations also to the seven Lodges which have been added to the Honorific Honours Board, andalso to Lodges which have moved up to a higher Honorific level, especially Brandwood Lodge for achieving Grand Patronstafus.

We continue to receive great support from the Royal Arch and members of other Orders and this is much appreciated. As encouraging as this is, we must still continue to push hard with new fundraising activities, the main one being the GrandDraw which was launched in September. Here is an opportunity to invite our relatives and friends to support a worthy causewhilst at the same time giving them a ch'ance to win a new Peugeot Car or valuable cash prize. If everyb-ody in the Provincesells a minimum of 10 tiakets;ach it will make a huge differencJto ourAppeal total. You sLould have received your 10 ticketsby now and when you need more they can be obtained from the Provincial Office! Remember - the net incoml generated bythe number of Draw tickets that you sell will be credited back to your Lodge and will therefore count towards individual LodgeHonorific awards.

Don't forget the cardboard moneyboxes. We have been receiving amounts which vary between f,4 and f,100 per box and soplease continue to save your trouser pockets and use the boxes for your loose changel Ifvour box has rnom out. replacemer, tscan be obtained from the Office - but you will liave to look elsewhere for some new pockets!

Please remember also to utilise Gift Aid at every opporhlnity. To date we have claimed an incredible f90k from the taxman andwe can continue to claim an additional 28.2% on all eligible donations until April 2011 . It really is too good to miss out on!

Arrangements for the Festival Dinner have now been finalised and it promises to be a great and memorable occasion. Attendanceat the Dinner will be restricted to Masons who have qualified as Stewards of the Festival and purchased a Festival Jewel, andPartners will qualify by purchasing a Ladies Brooch. Why not get a group together from your Lodge to celebrate your collectivecontribution to the Appeal in style.

With 20 months still to go it is not too late to sign individual standing orders and Lodges have still got time to formulate actionplans for fundraising activities. How much more than f,lm can we raise? If we can get to f 1.lm and add a further f 150k fromGiftAid, our Provincial Grand Master could be handing over a cheque to the RMTGB for f 1.25m at the ICC on 3rd June 2011.What a great night that would bel

you may think, except that thisparticular mountain is 201 1 feet high and theclimb is challenging. Armed only with regahaand a will to survive, and led by the

Worshipful Master Keith Bhzzard with the

support of ten Brethren and one familymember. Such was the spirit of all taking part that all terrain difficulties were quicklyovercome. At the top of the mountain, Brethren then dorured regalia for this uniquephotograph at the Caim. The climbers then marched back down the mountain, completing the round trip in about 6 hours before repairing to the nearby ElanHotel

A Bright FutureWorcestershire Knights Templar had the satisfaction of seeing how their charity contributions are spent when John Talbotaddressed them at one of their meetings at Rainbow Hill, Worcester. Mr Talbot is Hospitaller of the St John Eye Hospital inJerusalem to which all KT funds go, and the Knights and invited Craft Masons listened spellbound as a story unfolded ofsupreme human endeavor and courage as hospital staff carry out delicate eye operations in a land where the turmoil seems tohave no end. Year after year the doctors have brought relief to thousands of people in a population where blindness is 17 timesmore prevalent than in Europe.

Because of difficulties in getting to Jerusalem, the hospital has built outreach clinics at Gaza and Hebron. "I was in Gaza lastweek," said Mr Talbot. "It has a very deprived and isolated population. The clinic is in poor condition in a poor building and amove is sorely needed." The relief work is aided by two mobile clinics, one of which was paid for by Worcestershire KT.

The Provincial Prior, R.E.Kt Graham Perkins, said: "We decided to raise the money for a mobile clinic to mark our 150thanniversary in2007 . The vehicle cost f,25,000 but in fact we raised f30,000 and the extra f,5,000 was used to equip it."Mr Talbot emphasised the need for continuous funding to maintain services. "Kdghts Templar have been fantastic," he said."You are the only people who year on year support us consistently." Thanking Mr Talbot, Eminent Preceptor E. Kt Colin Young

said: "The work you are doing is an heroic venture. It's good to see

where the money goes. You are doing God's work. A charitycollection among the Knights and craft Masons present was stronglysupported and Graham Perkins handed over a cheque for f 500 to MrTalbot.

The Deputy ProvincialGrand Master

The mystery about Bob Vaughan is how he packs so much intolais life. For most men, fulfllling the role of Deputy ProvincialGrand Master u'ould be all-consuming. But, while agreeingthat it takes up over 90 per cent of his spare time, he is stillable to sque eze tn such diverse interests as hot air ballooningand classic cars.

It doesn't stop there. At his home in Solihull there's anexciting looking sports car he assembled himself, a 1964Rover 95 awaiting attention, a touring caravan awaiting atow bar to take it somewhere, two bikes awaiting some pedalpower, and some fishing rods awaiting their flrst cast. Oh, andthen there's his plan to take up bee keeping next year!As you will gather, at 64 our DPGM has a lively mind and agreat zest for life and has lost none of his enthusiasm for hiswork as a Chartered Qu anttty Surveyor where he specialisesin refurbishing old buildings and claims - in a professionalcapacity of course - to have visited nearly every pub in theProvince !

And as his mind flicks seemingly in several directions at once,he remains a relaxed friendly individual with a wannth thatcommunicates itself to everybody who meets him.Nowhere is this more evident than as he goes about theProvince in an endless round of Masonic duties that sitcomfortably on his shoulders.

Bob Vaughan was initiated into the Lodge of St George, No.5691, by his father in 1aw, Philip Fitter, in November 197l.Now, 38 years later, he is No.2 tnthe Province, and a memberof many degrees.

"I d.idn't set out to make such progreSS," he said, "but as I waspromoted I felt I wanted to contribute more and more."He has embraced the policy of bringing more transparencyto the Craft. He urges that the influence and work ofFreemasonry should be made more public and to this end hastaken on the role of Information officer on top of all his other

commitments. He thus has an overview of the twice yearlyWorcestershire Source magaztfie and the fast-growing websiteworcestershirepgl.org.uk and he is keen for the AssociatedMasonic Lodges to be more involved in community schemes.

Of Freemasonry today, VW. Bro Bob says: "We facechallenges rn attracting more people into the Craft and, justas imp ortant, in retaining its members. As well as recruitingyoung people, we should not forget that there are a lot of oldermen who are still young in mind and maybe looking for a newinterest. "He attributes his ability to cope with all the demands madeon him to the unstinting support of his wife known to all andsundry as Steve.

"Steve is very involved in our work," he says. "She and hercolleagues do so much behind the scenes, raising money forcharity, and making sure social functions go smoothly."The Vaughans have two sons in their thirties. . Richard, arlelectronics engineer, lives and works in London, while Jamesis a lecturer in the International Politics Department at theUniversity of Aberystwyth.

With all his many interests, it is easy to strike a commonchord with our DPGM, but there's one subject best to avoid.Gardening is not on his agenda. It goes only as far as cuttingthe lawns. The rest, he says, he prefers to leave to nature!

The interview was conducted by Peter Ricketts, PPrGSuptWsand a menlber of the Lodge of Hope and Charity, l{o. 377, inthe Province o.f Worcestershire.
