Come see what makes

The Western THE BEST

Come to The Western: The Greatest Value for Foot and Ankle SpecialistsThe Western has become not only an annual tradition for members of the podiatric community to come together, but also the ideal place for doctors and medical staff from all areas of expertise to earn continuing medical education contact hours, including radiology CECH, for their license requirements while gaining a top notch education. Office staff and medical assistants will learn how to run the office and care for patients when they attend the Assistants’ Program.

Once again we welcome esteemed instructors who will no doubt provide the latest and greatest tips and techniques on hot topics including but not limited to biomechanics, sports medicine, wound care, dermatology, plus an all-day practice management track for both doctors and assistants.

The Western will feature two important ICD-10 workshops structured to both help your office transition and also stay in compliance with the new regulations. Doctors and staff both have the opportunity to register for these essential workshops.

Hands-on workshops will cover ankle reconstruction, trauma, wound management, and surgical treatment of osteoarthritis. In addition to the popular basic arthroscopy lab this year we have added an advanced workshop for those looking to take their skills to the next level.

The enticing exhibit hall will provide you with an opportunity to not only see the latest in medical and surgical advancements and a host of other products to aid in the success of your practice and patient care, but also take a nice break between lectures and workshops. The Western provides free refreshments to attendees, including healthy snacks to keep you on your toes the duration of the meeting.

Disneyland®, celebrating their 60th anniversary this year, will host The 2015 Western Foot and Ankle Conference. The Disneyland® Hotel & Convention Center in Anaheim, California is a 4 Diamond location boasting beautiful pools and outdoor lounges, modern guest amenities, and entertaining dining facilities provide even more areas for catching up with colleagues and friends before and after the meeting. Attendees can participate in unique festivities at Disneyland®’s 60th Diamond Celebration with discounted Disneyland® Park and Disney California Adventure® Park tickets, making The Western not only an exemplary educational seminar, but also a special family affair.

So come celebrate with us and see for yourself what makes The Western the most successful program and exhibition west of the Mississippi.

Scientific objectives

The Biomechanics of RunningLearners will be able to understand common running injuries and how to evaluate for them, apply biomechanical principles to personal tendon injuries, understand the rationale for minimalist techniques for running, apply the science of running shoes for injury prevention, and understand post-exercise recovery to enhance injury prevention and training success.

Biologic Manipulation of Sports Injuries: Science or FictionLearners will be able to understand different methods of biologic manipulation of performance, understand the effects of performance enhancing drugs and the risks they pose to athletes, analyze the clinical effects and outcomes of PRP on Achilles Tendinopathy, and understand and apply the effects of biologic manipulation to bone and tendon function and healing.

Controversies in Cartilage InjuriesLearners will learn the latest techniques and upcoming developments in the treatment of cartilage injuries and be able to analyze and apply the benefits of juvenile hyaline cartilage and bone marrow aspirate concentrate in osteochondral lesions of the talus, understand the subtle tarsal metatarsal injury in the athlete, and apply allograft surgical techniques to repair of neglected Achilles tendon injury.

Only Skin DeepLearners will be able to appreciate the various treatment options for plantar warts and the value of the treatments, apply a logical approach to evaluating skin disorders, better appreciate the available topical/non-surgical modalities for the treatment of in situ and superficial carcinoma, and learn about the evidence-based practice of onychomycosis using the latest medications.

Case Presentations: Challenging Forefoot Cases and Reconstruction TechniquesLearners will be able to apply surgical techniques to manage revisional surgery, analyze factors influencing leading to non-union/malunion and how to surgically repair the non-union/malunion, analyze factors responsible for failed bunion and forefoot fracture repair, and will have the opportunity to discuss revisional surgical correction of failed forefoot and rearfoot procedures.

Revisional Forefoot ReconstructionLearners will be able to evaluate the factors involved in failed forefoot surgery and understand techniques to evaluate and surgically revise the failed Lapidus bunionectomy and the closing base wedge osteotomy, the potential causes of the recurrent bunionectomy and treatment options for surgical revision, and iatrogenic complications in forefoot surgery and apply to common forefoot surgical cases.

Revisional Rearfoot ReconstructionLearners will be able to evaluate the factors involved in failed rearfoot and ankle surgery, understand and apply surgical

techniques to revise potential complications associated with ankle arthroplasty, malunion, and instability and potential complications and surgical repair of neglected calcaneal fractures, as well as evaluate and apply surgical techniques to repair failed triple arthrodesis.

An Underlying Mechanism of NeuropathyLearners will learn of the proposed correlation between sensory peripheral neuropathy and intraneuronal energy deficiency and of how intraneuronal energy deficiency may account for the etiology, anatomical distribution and progression of the sensory peripheral neuropathies associated with chemotherapy, diabetes and other diseases.

Will Your Documentation Save You or Sink You?At the end of the lecture, learners will be able to understand the importance of proper documentation in patient medical records, appreciate the common documentation concerns noted in the defense of podiatric malpractice claims, apply general principles of documentation in medical records, and identify the components of proper documentation for history and physical, progress notes, wound care, referrals and consultations, informed consent, operative care, communications, complications and communications.

Plantar FasciitisLearners will be able to analyze a structural evaluation to appreciate the role of LLD in plantar fasciitis and understand the evidence behind the five models driving osteopathic manipulative medicine treatment modalities as applied to plantar fasciitis.

Innovations in Medicine and SurgeryLearners will be able to appreciate the latest technology that is changing ways to provide medical and surgical care and the associated clinical outcomes as well as the technology currently being developed that will influence how medicine is delivered or how it will alter clinical outcomes. They will also be able to understand the effect of new technology and drug development on limb salvage through effects on prevention, skin, ulcers and vascular surgery.

Digging into Wound CareLearners will understand the drivers of cost in wound management to be better equipped to provide value-based care to this patient population, understand the general evidence-based principles for evaluation and management of ulcers involving the foot and ankle, be able to analyze cases to determine when prophylactic surgery is valuable in preventing recurrent complications, appreciate the complexity of limb salvage and be able to apply the efficacy of limb salvage techniques determine the when there is value in limb sparing procedures, and understand the importance and limitations of compression therapy in venous leg ulcers.

By attending the General Sessions, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine will be able to accomplish these medical education objectives.
