MESSAGE FROMTHE IEO

Clinical exchange has al-ways been a major component of our association’s activities. For several decades, officials withinthe IADS family have been striv-ing to create and maintain a net-work of member countries that are hosting dental students from around the world. Each year, hun-dreds of dental students from around 60 IADS member coun-tries are given the life changing opportunity to visit a foreign coun-try and experience dentistry in a whole other way.

This year’s clinical ex-change program is no less diverse and rich with opportunity than the years before. Indeed, our member

organizations have done an excel-lent job in preparing engaging in-coming exchange programs, guar-anteeing an absolutely fantastic cultural and clinical, experience for dental students worldwide. I would like to use this occasion to salute my fellow Exchange Of-ficers for their efforts in helpingmaintain our student exchange program up and running, and ap-plaud their ever-inspiring engage-ment to make sure their fellow dental students get to live what can be described as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The current term is also a turning point in the history of the IADS International Clinical

Exchange Program (ICEP), for it has seen the adoption of its new Internal Regulations, ensuring a legislative structure upon which to continue building and growing what has come to be known as the largest and longest running, student-run, dental students ex-change program in the world.

Not only that, the year 2016 will also be remembered as the year when our association has fully embraced the internet as a means to efficiently coordinateoureffortsinhandlingtheapplica-tion process to our vast network of clerkships. This was achieved by introducing the IADS Exchange Portal - a website that makes it

easy for all dental students we represent to search for, and apply to, clinical internships organized by our member organizations.

Needless to say, there is a strong feeling of optimism for what is to come for the IADS In-ternational Clinical Exchange Pro-gram. As we continue to honour a legacy of more than 50 years of intercontinental dental students’ exchange, I can safely say that the future is bright indeed.

ARTICLE 2.2.1 OF THE IADS INTERNATIONAL CLINICAL

EXCHANGE PROGRAM REGULATIONS & POLICIES

For more that half a century, the IADS Interna-tional Clinical Exchange Program (ICEP) has given the opportunity to thousands upon thousands of dental students worldwide to wonder out of their comfort zone and experience dentistry in other countries than their own.

Indeed, participants in the IADS Interna-tional Clinical Exchange Program get to visit for-eign countries and enroll in clinical clerkships. These internships have been one of the most important activities organized by our member or-ganizations.

The continued functioning of a decades long, student-run, exchange program is proof that the structure of the IADS International Clinical Ex-change Program has been well thought out from the start. Our IADS Leadership Alumni have, over the years, done a great job in ensurring the man-agement know-how of such a program is properly passed down to the next generations of exchange officers.

However, the handover of this know-how has always been mostly verbal and through docu-ments (i.e previous issues of this exchange book-let) that hardly weather the test of time.

This was one of the reasons that pushed the current IADS Clinical Exchange Leadership to to make sure the next generations of exchange

officers have a sound structure to follow, which is anchored within the most important document of our association: the IADS Constitution.

To be able to make such a change, the Feb-ruary 2016 IADS General Assembly in Bratislava, Slovakia, have approved a constitutional amend-ment that permitted bodies within the association to have their own Internal Regulations. This new amendment guarantees that each program or-ganized by IADS can have its own “mini-constitu-tion”, containing rules and policies, which must be followed by all parties involved in said program.

Thus, the legislative ground was laid for the same General Assembly to adopt the first edition of the IADS International Clinical Exchange Pro-gram’s Regulations & Policies - a document that contains new rules to ensure the continuity and growth of our student exchange program.

From here on out, the Internal Regulations of the IADS ICEP will serve as the guiding princi-ples for all IADS exchange officers and potential exchange students.

INTRODUCING THE

IADSClinicalExchange:ToInfinityandBeyondAs technology around us is

evolving and we start to live in a world that stresses immedia-cy, where everything we need is more often than not only a few keywords and a push of a button away, we have come to realize that in order to grow and evolve the IADS clinical exchange pro-gram to include even more host-ing countries and a bigger num-ber of exchangees each season, we need to embrace the techno-logical advances that are avail-able to us.

This is why we have endeav-ored since the beginning of the 2015/2016 IADS term, to de-velop and prepare the IADS Ex-

change Portal. In brief, it is a web-site that would make an already functional and effective way ofhandling the IADS exchange ap-plications, into a streamlined pro-cess which guides both students and our member countries’ ex-changeofficer intomakingsurethe exchange experience is the best that can be, by limiting the hassles of paperwork, encour-aging transparency and easing access to information about our members’ exchange programs.

We are hoping that starting this year, dental students from around the world will be able to login to their IADS Exchange Portal account and easily look
