DIGITAL DENTAL REVOLUTION

For many years systematized and well-establishedconventional protocols have been used in pros-thetic rehabilitations, yielding results that met clinicians‘ expectations and often exceeded thoseof patients. Over time the advent of new technol-ogies and new materials has enabled the dental team to create prosthetic rehabilitations with an accuracy and precision that were previously dif-fi cult to obtain.

Today, intraoral scanning technology is one of the most exciting new areas in dentistry, with three-dimensional digital reconstruction of the oral structures facilitating a wide range of pro-cedures in fi elds such as prosthodontics, implant dentistry, and orthodontics. Currently available intraoral scanners overcome many of the limita-tions and disadvantages of traditional impressionprocedures while maintaining a high level of accuracy, making them an effi cacious alternative to conventional impression techniques.

In this book, the authors introduce the protocol they have used in their own practice, integrating new digital technologies and advanced materialswith experience gained from using traditional techniques to provide restorations with optimal strength, esthetics, and function while reducing treatment times and improving patient comfort. Many cases are presented, highlighting the modi-fi ed protocols the authors have developed over time with their increasing knowledge of new materials and the ongoing development of new technology and demonstrating a level of quality in the results that is on par with if not superior to that achieved using conventional methods.

t he first FDI regional conference of the Americas, was held in Santiago, Chile, March 25–28, 2015, an event that brought together some 2,000 participants from the region of Central and South America and dis-cuss dentistry and oral health.

M y activities were, among other things, to organize together with the national Scientific Dental Students Association

of Chile (AnACeo) the IADS meeting, the First IADS Americas Lecture Contest, the First IADS Americas Dental olympics, and scientific posters contest. Gave a brief wel-coming speech at the opening ceremony, talks with some local and regional repre-sentatives from FDI, corporate and inter-national partners. I was particularly im-pressed with the German Pavilion, where I met with German Ambassador to Chile, he hans henning Blomeyer – Bartenstein.

I met with FDI President Dr. tin Chun Wong, where we aboard sponsorship in the next versions of the “World oral health Day”, as we also mentioned about the projects of the IADS in doing science through International Dental research Program, and his progress in America.

the activities undertaken by the stu-dents were successful, since the First IADS Americas Lecture Contest (photo 1: https://goo.gl/ahhxgL), there were 11 original research, through the First IADS Americas Dental olympics (pho-to2: https://goo.gl/Zoeob0) which it was successful, and full of excitement and competitive spirit within a framework of friendship, finishing with the poster

We thank our many sponsors, but es-pecially Sebastian Jimenez, Director of WebDental and Marta hines represen-tative 3Disc Imaging, without their help would not have been possible this event.

there was also space for awareness campaigns, in which he was represent-ing the stand of the campaign Prevents oral Cancer, “Sticks out your tongue” led by Dr. Patricio rubio, with which we are ready to obtain the sponsorship of the FDI. It is also to highlight the work of “Dentists without Borders” – (oSF Chile) led by Dr. Andrea Valenzuela Frantisch-ek, who made the presentation of its vol-unteer work in Chile and abroad.

10th–24th of February – 25 international participants from 15 different country – 1050 patients were treated

1 0th of February marked the start of a wonderful experi-ence for 25 participants. An experience full with happi-ness, learning and seeing a country that has a diverse culture. the journey was like a dream where the 14 days

passed in no time.

It was the first time to organize a program in nepal. But from the beginning the nepalese team put a great effort and we were sure it will be an amazing one.

All the participants arrived at Khatmundo having the first night and resting from the long journey each one had to reach this part of the world. In the early morning the bus arrived at ex-actly 6:00 am to take us to the city where the project will be held. no one was ready at the time and the president of ne-pal was going through this road and if this happen we would have been delayed for few hours. the team cooperated and we prepared our self quickly and we entered the bus which for our surprise had a wifi connection !!. soon in an hour we were already passing through the city looking at the scenes and seeing the life of the people. everything was so simple. People living an ordinary life with children playing. the journey lasted 5 hours we had a small break for lunch in a resort in the way eating nepalese popular food. And we had our first group selfie !! near the river. soon we arrived in Chitwan were we got welcome by flowers and scarfs. What a hoSPItALItY !! in every where we go we got welcomed by the same way.

we had a small opening ceremony where everyone introduced them self and small talks from the organizers and from the IADS chairman of voluntary committee. We had a dinner full of loughs and wonders of how the next day will be as it going to be the first working day. In the morning we were in the camp site. and everything was ready and a lot of patients were wait-ing for the day to start. Immediately we started our work di-vided into groups and performing the clinical work in surgery, periodontics and conservative clinics. every one was very mo-tivated and we gained a lot of experience asking the doctors supervising the work and learning from each other. All these things were facilitated by the great preparation and organiza-tion. the first working day finished but it didn’t end without a surprise as we got to meet a very popular actor in penal. he come to show the work and support what we do. the next day was a continuation of the voluntary work. We treated more pa-tients, we saw interesting cases, learned new techniques and gaining experience and most importantly we were working as a team. the fourth day we had a break we went on a beautiful trip to one of the temples. It was very fascinating as we got to see the mediation of the people and learn more about the nepalese culture. We climbed a lot of steps maybe thousands to reach the temple and the nice thing is that we got to see the actual way of living. It wasn’t affected by any tourists. Blessings were given to the participants there. In the night we went to the food festival in the town which is a huge event with performers from all over nepal and of course a lot of nepalese food. we

dramatic humanitarian cri-sis has arisen in the Federal Democratic republic of nepal as a result of the intense shock

waves of 25 April 2015, with its epicen-ter located between Kathmandu and Pokhara; statistics estimate over 10,000 victims.

In these same regions, specifically in the Chitwan district, just three months earlier, the first IADS (International As-sociation of Dental Students) volunteer project for dental students, of 2015, was undertaken in collaboration with the team from “Sai ram Dental Care Pvt. Ltd.”, actually a nepalese dental associa-tion, well-established in volunteer den-tal programs.

the “Dental Project in Chitwan”, as the project was called, was attended by 25 young graduates and aspiring gradu-ates, from 15 different countries round the world, including three students, and also AISo members, of the Italian del-egation.

Following the rapid spread of news about the alarming conditions in which a large portion of the nepalese population had been hurled, the allocation of an on-site rescue team was officially announced, headed by Dr. Ajay neupane, to ensure basic necessities to the victims affected by the earthquake and to contribute to-wards confronting the serious sanitation and food emergency conditions.

Among the international humanitarian aid associations, the Italian Association of Students of Dentistry has been ac-tive in its initiative, realizing the true spirit of cooperation through which we have witnessed a nationwide partici-pation in our cause, involving all AISo members and other participants in the IADS project from different nations which, in turn, have spread the spirit of solidarity and humanitarian aid in their countries.

At the same time in many Italian univer-sities fundraising activities were held through stands set up ad hoc and the creation of a network of information in collaboration with other student asso-ciations and also spreading the initiative through online newspapers and person-ally sensitizing students and academics from different degree courses.

AISo, within a few days, has reached an exemplary level of success in its charity fundraising campaign, donations total-ing 3,518.49 euros, immediately sent to the nepalese team!

Under the slogan “helping Children tackle Post earthquake trauma”, in the first week of June, more than 260 chil-dren in primary and high school in the villages of Devaghat and Sorpani have been reached, providing each student with a backpack, notebooks, pencils and colors; without forgetting to in-clude a toothbrush and toothpaste and

other items for the personal hygiene. Volunteers have also spent entire days bringing comfort to children, strug-gling to take the first step towards over-coming the psychological trauma.

every day we think about our future, regardless of the world around us, but it is the latter, at times, to hinder our dreams … the solidarity of each person who has contributed, every college stu-dent and every single AISo member, has been manifested and expressed through this national campaign.

our slogan?together we can make the dif-ference for nepal! Let’s give people back the strength to keep on smiling!

I am a Spanish recently graduated dentist, who was lucky to be a IADS-DSD scholar in the Barcelona edition of the course. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to attend the course and really enjoyed everything about it.

At the beginning I thought that I could be slightly unprepared for the course, since I had just graduated from dental school and didn’t have as much work experience as other course attendees. however, the course was centered on developing a different kind of skills, more focused on communication, interdisciplin-ary treatment planing and treatment presentation. I think these skills are as important as dental skills in order to be successful in the professional life and are not usually taught in dental school.

the speakers were amazing and by listening to them you could really tell that they loved what they do. each of them focused on a certain topic of the DSD concept, allowing the audience to have the whole perspective. the first day was a little more theo-retical, in order to provide us with an overview of every step. the passionate way of Christian Coachman, Florin Cofar, Livio Yoshi-naga, Marcelo Calamita, Paulo Kano and Francis Coachman to explain themselves and transmit their knowledge really made me not want to stop listening for any minute and enjoy every

aspect of the course. Also, thanks to their kindness of sharing their material with us (presentations, videos and templates) it was very easy to follow and allowed you to keep listening and paying attention without having to worry about writing every-thing down. After the long day it was very nice to meet new people and share thoughts with other participants in the wel-coming cocktail that was organized after the lectures.

the second day was awesome. the DSD team went for a morn-ing run before the course. Later on, the lectures continued and the speakers were getting ready for a life demonstration on a real patient. they showed us everything they were talking about on Pablo, a regular guy that came in for a treatment plan. We learned how to take the pictures, as well as the videos and how to put up the PowerPoint presentation for the patient. they highlighted the key points of the treatment plan presentation and emphasized on building a strong relationship with the pa-tient. It was very nice to watch the practical approach on a real patient because it enabled us to see that it was more simple than it looked like. We finished the evening with the DSD party, where we were able to have pleasant conversations with the speakers as well as discuss different aspects with other course partici-pants while enjoying a delicious dinner and drinking some wine.

the final day was a hands on workshop where we learned to do everything step by step by ourselves. Personally I

the DSD-IADS Scholarship was founded last year by the proposal of IADS that was searching a way

to appreciate the hard work of talented dental students, and we were fortunate for Digital Smile

Design and especially Dr. Christian Coachman, to be very opened and very keen to support this

idea. During my long time of being in IADS I have noticed the presence of so many hardworking,

great visionaries and full of potential dental students who were dreaming to change into better their

student communities, and this opportunity is about supporting the further development of such

dental students. It is a real pleasure for me to be part of this project and I would like to thank my col-

leagues Joao Pires, Gorkem Sengun with whom we are working together, and of course to the entire

Digital Smile Design team who made this opportunity a reality.

considered very useful to have this part of the course, because that is how you really learn and remember everything later. Being able to put up our own presentation allowed us to learn the tips and tricks of adjusting the size of the pictures, how to do the measurements, etc. and overall getting familiarized with the Keynote or PowerPoint settings. thanks to their step by step instructions I could really learn everything in a very easy way and I felt ready to give it a try with my patients.

of course, like everything new we learn, practice makes the expert and it requires a learning curve to be good at it and fast. At the beginning I was a little slow when I put it in practice and needed a long time to get my cases ready. But now, after doing it a couple times, I have seen how easy it gets once one is used to the steps.

I want to thank the IADS-DSD team to have given me the schol-arship to attend the course. I feel like it opened me a new way of approaching my cases and treatment presentations, which I think will be the standard in a couple of years. I feel lucky to have learned the DSD concept in such an early stage of my professional development because this will enable me to get used to it more easily and continue improving my communica-tion and social skills. A Dentist is not only the therapist for disease, more-over, a dentist should at the same time have the abil-ity to build up the smile as an artist.

Digital Smile Design Class really made me go to an-other level not only in esthetic level, but also the way to make a treatment planning to my patient. Before the class, I only use the traditional way to discuss treatment plan with my patient (only words and intraoral picture.) Livio interpreted the mind of the pa-tient to us, what exactly our patients expect for smile? Why they want the treatment you make for them?? And most important, how different will they look like after your treatment?? Without the DSD class, I can barely have the idea to present the possible result of a perfect smile at the beginning of the treatment!!!!

By the step by step from Christian, I start to realize every single detail that I’m used to ignore, the ratio of tooth, between teeth, and the relationship from smile to lip and whole face. I did have the knowledge before but not the way how to make the smile be harmonious with them, and during the class I do get the practical method to make it!!! Dean Huan-Yuan Huang

Abu Dhabi

J anuary 14–17 2015 saw the first Digital Smile Design World tour in the Middle east! the conference took place in Fairmont Bab Albahr in Abu Dhabi, more than 100 participants joined from 30 different coun-

tries. Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a multipurpose conceptual protocol which provides remarkable advantages such as di-agnostic abilities facilitated through extra oral and intra oral aesthetic and structural evaluation. It also helps in improved communication between team members, thus providing a better visual perception to the patient which in return gives them more motivation towards accepting the treatment plan. two participants from University of Sharjah had the opportu-nity to receive a Student Leadership Scholarship from the In-ternational Association of Dental Students (IADS) and Digital Smile design (DSD). the IADS-DSD scholars were rawand naji, Immediate Past President of the Univeristy of Sharjah Dental Students’ Association(USDSA), and Amira Altigani, also a mem-ber of the USDSA. the 4 days course included a wide variety of presentations, live case demonstrations and hand on exercises offered by the International speakers and DSD mentors like Dr Christian Coachman, Dr Florin Cofar, Dr Livio Yoshinaga and Dr Anas Aloum. the course was very enriching, in which we learnt how to integrate the basic science of dentistry with the latest advancements in the dental field, to give us the best possible results that will lead to patient satisfaction. Pictures below are taken during DSD lectures, with a short description explaining some of the concepts of DSD.

Did you know about

SLoVAKIA ?

Due to its location, Slovakia is often called ,,the heart of europe’’. there, in the heart of europe, filled with love, our association was born. Slovak Association of Dental Students (SADS) is association of students of dental medicine from four medical faculties in Slovakia. We are active members of european Den-tal Students Association (eDSA) and International Association of Dental Stu-dents (IADS). the main goal of our association is to help our members to see the world, to improve their professional skills but also soft skills and general knowledge.

our Main Activities include: • International exchanges. • Summer researches and practical internships.• Workshops, practical and theoretical lectures.• National preventive project „Together for beautiful and healthy smile” road-show. In 2015 it took two weeks to travel through 19 cities in Slovakia where 5091 people were taught the importance of dental hygiene and its

proper technique.• Preventive projects for children and people in need, at children’s oncology department, at center for abused chil-dren and mothers, at orphanages.• Ski event with lectures about periodontology and dental hygiene. • SADS in cooperation with the association of Bratislava General Medicine Students managed the I. Conference of 3D printing in medicine.• EDSA meeting in Košice, that we organized in 2014.

I believe that IADS is like a puzzle. It couldn’t be complete without all the little pieces because it’s the small pieces that make the big picture. We believe we are an important part of IADS family just like all the other countries we play unsubstitutable role in this puzzle, because every country brings something unique and special to it, and that is the reason why the result is always so magical. Because together is better !!

u Pavel, you worked for IADS as member of the ExCo for a long time, could tell us about your path in IADS and how did it start ?

IADS, I have never thought of the moment when I will be in the position about talking of my beginnings, it right now actually being a sign of the incoming “end”, but look there the moment has come. My IADS involvement started with a very young student individual, who was dreaming a lot and maybe too much sometimes, who just wanted to join his local dental student association to IADS in order to bring foreign student clinical exchanges to my colleagues from University, providing them something that the University couldn’t provide. I remember those days when I started the process in the summer of 2009, being in the middle of the exams, studying during the day and translating the local constitution in english during the night so we could be on time with the membership. All went well and I was actually fortunate enough for my first Congress to take place in ro-mania that year and having the organizers being very nice

In the current edition of the

IADS Magazine we have decided to

President - Pavel Scarlat, who had a

our association. Within the article we

to me and helping me participate. So, that’s how the pretty shy of me has got its first encounter with our organization, being in his first General Assembly and everything to me was like “Wow!”. From that to the idea that I have finally found what I was looking for was a very small step, as I was searching to do something extraordinary that would give me much more challenge than just reading books and being in classes. Soon after that I have got elected in the executive Committee and the real journey has started.

u You have been in IADS during almost 7 years and it comes to its end, what did IADS change in you ? in terms of personal or maybe career visions?

the best question I believe would be of what IADS didn’t change in you. talking about the question itself, I still don’t realize that 7 years have passed and I have never thought at the beginning that I would ever have the possibility to stay for so much in this orga-nization, as every year had it’s challenges. You know, IADS it’s a such a complex environment that if you stay for a good amount of time and you get immersed into everything what means this

organization, it would definitely bring pretty much changes to your personal-ity “DnA”, to the way you do the things, to the way you think, even behavior it-self can be altered with its positives and negatives. Getting into details would be a little bit too much and too personal right now, but I can only state that the real mechanism that stays behind al-most everyone who had this experience, is the people they get to meet! If after all these years I have become maybe a somehow better individual, for that I have to thank each of one I had the chance to meet at IADS Congresses and Meetings, project managements, at all our educational and social activities that are pretty much renowned, learning from you all I have grown. I bow my head in front of everyone of you, many of you were my inspiration, the thing that kept me on going.

regarding the dental career aspect, what many student officials at any level maybe still don’t realize is that at some point soon after your graduation you will have to start deleting many pages out of your CV and the fact that maybe someone has built programs, founded new successful projects and established many partnerships that helped a lot the organization, those achievements will fade away and disappear. What actu-ally remains is your experience, is your character, is the fact that you have got through so many challenges that later give you enough power and strength to succeed in the incoming career, which is a much tougher battle than the student life and with very different rules.

u Since your beginning until now, what changed in IADS ? Did you no-tice any difference since your first congress participation ?

Well, at the same time many things have changed and many have remained the same. Back than as far as I remember our organization was pretty much concen-trated in europe, a little bit representa-tion of Africa and 2-3 Asian associations, however if someone would take a look right now at IADS, it’s really breathtak-ing, the immense diversity and the way the organization has spread all over the world, connecting so many communi-ties and offering so many opportunities to dental students, it’s something that we

were only dreaming about before. the current and past IADS Leadership teams in the last years have done a tremendous job, taking at the same time advantage of the rising and a real awakening of the national student communities all over the world. Definitely, also the heritage that we have got from our ancestors have paved the way.

the things that remained the same, is the spirit of friendship, that has never changed, the same hundred smiles you get to see at meetings and the unity, that’s something we really value a lot and tend to keep as our highest priority.

u What’re your plan for your next life step ?

I’m graduated and I’m a dentist right now and the fact that I choose to stay for 6 days/65 hours a week in the clinic says that I really love what I do. I want to become a very good dentist, always do the best pos-sible at treating patients as that’s the most enjoyable part of almost any of my day. Seeing a patient sincerely smile and them expressing gratitude, that’s a feeling that I could never equal almost to anything else. I’m sincerely proud of what I’m doing and I really hope to grow as much as possible, that’s my definitely my goal.

For you IADS in few words ?

the main word would be passion, as I’ve put it in everything I was doing during the years. I believe I was in love with this organization, however I’m so sorry right now for breaking up, but that’s how life works.

I don’t know where to start really… my life in the past four years has been highly influenced by IADS and especially by the clinical exchange, as I was the neo of hungary in this time. During this period my association hosted 200

students from eleven different countries from all over the world. When I think back of this time, it is quite difficult to point out one specfic memory. I can say it has been a very instructive period, with lots of ups and downs. And if I could start over, I would definietly do it again.

I can remember my first „rendez-vous” with the IADS exchange: I was after my freshman year, in 2010, and we stayed with my friend in the dormitory with the exchange students for two weeks as Contact Persons (CP). I think that was a really determ-ing time, the sightseeing, partying, showing my culture, and learning from others inspired me. next year, my local associa-tion elected me as Leo of Budapest. that summer was unfor-gettable: I made deep friendships, which are still lasting, and showed me, that despite of linguistic and cultural differences we can share many things. the year after, the General Assem-bly of the hungarian Dental Students Association elected me

as neo, and I fullfilled this position since that time. that year was a great challenge, as I had to prepare all inviation letters for the students who needed it, sometimes I got lost in the pass-port copies, a birth date or just by misspelling a name. It tought me a lesson: if you work, do it with high precision and carefully, so you only have to do it once. this experince helped me a lot in the upcoming years. Also, I can not be grateful enough for my friends, with whom I worked with: my Leo-s. Without them, the Budapest exchange experience would not have been the same. their devotion, professionalism, and enthusiasm made the exchange students feel cared about, and the programs or-ganized by them kept the group going and helped to connect easier.

I am happy that I had the opportunity to show my world fa-mous university and modern faculity. Semmelweis University has a great reputation, and I believe, that the hospitality and professional guidence of the professors made the students feel like in their own dental school. It was very intereting to see, that the students had different approaches for the treat-ments.

thanks to the exchange:

I was able to meet different cultures, amazing people. And what even makes me happier, is to see my exchange stu-dents become friends with each other: many students af-ter the program go and visit each other in their countries, or even go together to an other exchange.

I met students from my university, who I probably would not met without this program. the organizing and work together made us become really close to each other. Some hungarian students, after helping in the organizing, collected their courage and went to their own exchange adventure.

I got to know my hometown better: Budapest. My city is the capital of hungary, a pictoresc place, seperated by the river Danube. By showing my town to others, I also discovered hidden treasures, and seeing my place with the eyes of tourist, made me also become a tourist in my own city.

I collected some incredible memories: watching the sunset on top of the city, spending a relaxing day at the beach, getting engaged in absurd and funny conversa-tions, tasting international food and drinks, dancing with my new friends until dawn.

Being neo is not always easy, but I can only say, despite of all work and effort, and sometimes disappointment, I was always „repayed” by a kind word or smile. And this reminded me, that what I was working for was worth it. totally .
