    A vast contribution

in the futureo the dental research eld

    Description:

The Standing Committee on Research and Education within IADS is proud to assure the successul continuity o the In-ternational Dental Research Program - the rst worldwide dental research exchange network which aims to transer and

oster research knowledge to the ones who desire to make a dierence within their dental communities.

The students will attend dental research internships which consist o assisting a dental research project developed within

a oreign University partner o the IDRP network. The internships takes place or about 2 to 8 weeks, the students be-

ing selected through a rigurous selection process and eventually having the acilities covered by the host university. In

2013, 16 Universities worldwide oer research internships to talented dental students and young graduates, in: Armenia,

Poland, Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, USA, Russian Federation, Cyprus (North Cyprus), Turkey.

The Program is a new limestone in the dental student research activity, which purposes to enlighten talented dental

students who one day will be the ones to push dentistry towards innovative and more successul treatments.

    Selection Process

The students have to submit the complete applica-

tion to the IADS National/Local Scientic Ocers or

the Project Leader (Mentor). The University receives

the applications and has the option to select the

students who better t the scientic project.

    a) A complete application consists o:

    1) Curriculum Vitae in English

    2) A letter o intent ( a short description o the scien-

    tic activities should be attached)

    3) Two letters o recommendation

    4) Copies o Medical Certicates and Awards.

The application materials should be written or trans-

    lated in English.

    Logistics

    - The Program/network consists o Universities oer-

ing dental research internships to international stu-

dents who are rigurously selected by the University.

    - A team o IADS National/Local Scientic Ocers are

in charge o successully implementing and assuring

    the continuity o the Program.

    - The Universities have the ull right o selecting the

students who better t the dental research internship

    - The student is involved in a dental research intern-

ship or a period o time ranging rom 2 to 8 weeks,

and at the completion o the internship it is granted

with a Certicate o Participation in the IDRP research

    Department o Prosthodontics

    Name o the research project:

    Removable partial and complete dentures

Project Leader (Mentor): Associate Proessor Marine

    Petrosyan

Description o the project: :The project is ocused on

methods o retention and stabilizations o complete and

partial removable dentures, principles o design o remov-

able partial dentures, laboratory stages during removable

    dentures abrication.

Retention is the principle that describes how well the den-

ture resists the orce o gravity, adhesiveness o oods and the

orces associated with the opening o the jaws. . Denture is

prevented rom moving in the vertical plane. Stability is de-

ned as the quality o a denture to be rm or constant to re-

sist displacement by unctional stresses. Stability is the prin-

ciple that describes how well the denture base is prevented

rom moving in the horizontal plane, withstands horizontal

orces. During our research project we pay attention on the

actors which aected on stability and retention: 1.Anatomi-

cal actors, which include size and quality o denture bearing

area. 2. Physiological actors (viscosity o saliva).

    3. Physical actors, which are adhesion, cohesion, interacial

surace tension, atmospheric pressure and peripheral seal.

    4. Mechanical actors (implants, denture adhesives, clasp

systems).Beore designing a removable partial denture we

do surveying. Objectives o surveying are the ollowings:

    1. To design a removable partial denture such that its rigid

and lexible components are appropriately positioned to

obtain good retention and bracing. 2. To determine the

path o insertion o a prosthesis such that there is no inter-

erence to insertion along this path. 3. To mark the height

o contour o the area (hard and sot tissues) above theundercut. 4. To mark the survey lines (height o contour o

a tooth). 5. To mark the undesirable undercuts into which

the prosthesis should not extend.During laboratory stages

we study casting procedures o removable partial dentures

metal ramework, stages o acrylic resin polimerisation. The

research work will include statistical, clinical, experimental

    components o chair scientiic work.

Project Leader (Mentor): Resident responsible or this project

organization A.E. Scherbovskich, Associate proessor Y.V.

    Petrov, proessor V.A.Kurkin, proessor E.V.Avdeeva

Description o the project:The infammatory periodontal

diseases are amongst the most common chronic diseases

to aect people. According to the statistics o World Health

    Organization aproximately 93% o adults and 80% o children

suer rom this pathology. The majority o modern medical

measures used in such cases have synthetic origin. For this

reason, while having antimicrobial action these drugs have a

great number o disadvantages, such as causing hypersensi-bilization, gradual resistance o pathogenic and saprophytic

microorganisms and etc. From this point o view, drugs based

on medical herbs have such advantages as saety, eciency,

minimal risk o allergic eect and wide therapeutic eect.

As a result o complex research which was based on

department o pharmacology and botanics in the coop-

eration with maxilloacial surgery and dentistry, general

and clinical microbiology, immunology and allergology

completely new herbal medicament was developed.

The aim o this research project is to study antimicrobial,

regenerating and hemostatic eects o new combined

drug on the infammatory process in periodontal tissue.

What will be the students involvement within the re-

    Description o the project:

Dental pulp represents rich and accessible source o stem

cells, which can be utilized anytime during the lie o the

patient. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) cultured in vitro are

greatly infuenced by the composition o the cultivation

    medium.

In previous years we were able to reduce the amount

o supplements o animal origin (especially etal cal

serum) in culture medium rom the usual 20% to 2%

and supplement culture medium with recombinantgrowth actors. This resulted in a change o basic bio-

logical and phenotypic properties o cultured DPSC.

We expect (and our unpublished results conirmed

this) that the addition o human plasma to the culture

medium has not only beneicial eects on basic bio-

logical properties, higher prolierative potential and

stability but also eects changes in the phenotypic

    Description o the project:

The project is ocused on tooth development and morpho-genesis o tooth anlagen as well as related structures. It is

based on signalling, prolieration, programmed cell death,

dierentiation and redistribution o single cell populations

    within the tooth primordia development.

Although regulation o tooth crown morphogen-

esis is well known and tissue engineering and tooth

regeneration are becoming a realistic possibility, in-

ormation on proper morphogenetic processes withintooth primordia, including prolieration, dierentia-

tion, distribution and death o cells is still incomplete.

Hitherto studies on cell prolieration concentrated as

a rule on the region surrounding the enamel knot a

The study is ocused also on complete development o

normodont dentition using an unique pig model with aim to

characterize it as a suitable reerence model o odontogen-

esis. This approach could contribute to the generalization o

results obtained rom studies o highly specialized dentition

the current knowledge and contribute to the understanding

o principles and mechanisms o odontogenesis and to the

explanation o evolution o mammalian dentition and adja-
