The American Kennel Club

Seventh National Tracking Invitational

Welcome to the Seventh National Tracking

Invitational. The amazing scenting ability of the dog

is the reason that dogs have become invaluable in

today’s society for explosive and narcotics detection,

arson detection, and search and rescue. The

American Kennel Club will showcase its finest

tracking dogs here at the Bernheim Arboretum &

Research Forest. It will be a great challenge for both

dog and handler.

Each dog has earned the title of Champion Tracker

(CT). In order to obtain this prestigious title, the

dog and owner must have earned a Tracking Dog (TD)

or Tracking Dog Urban (TDU), Tracking Dog Excellent

(TDX), and the Variable Surface Tracker (VST) title.

This event contains 12 different tracks using a

combination of elements taken from the TDX and

VST track requirements. This event should prove to

be an exciting demonstration of the

dog’s remarkable tracking abilities.

AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONAL JUDGES

CONNIE AUSTIN & ULE JAMES

Connie and Ule have been judging tracking since 2002 and have judged over

975 entries. What we enjoy most about tracking is the tracking community

including club members, judges and exhibitors. From the tracklayer we

happened to drive by and see her re-walking her track and heading off a

corner in the wrong direction for the woods on Sat, we called out “what is the

matter”, she said, “I have to pee”, we said, “then you have to pee on the

track”… to the wonderful cooks who make the best foods, from homemade

cookies, to meatloaf to caramel brownies.

The Exhibitors and their Dogs. Then the dogs, from the tiniest miniature

pinscher on a cold day in the snow for a TDX, who had one corner left and he

started to do the small dog cold dance, but after considerable encouragement

from the owner continued on to the end of the track to the glove… to the

handler who completed the TDX and turned around and said “HOW long was

that track?” It was 980 yards due to the long narrow field and the need for

one more turn. A track plotted in a maintenance area, with one of the articles

being a carburetor, the dog indicated the article, and the confused look on the

handler’s face, holding up a carburetor and trying to decide if that should go in

her gear or if she should leave it. The tear jerker tracks, where someone with

cancer and probably only one tracking event left for her whose dog passed the

TD, the rescue dog who when re-homed was terrified of everything and made

it thru a TD with flying colors, to the VST handler who had decided this would

Page 14: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

be her last try and she passed! When working towards a VST seeing the same

handlers at multiple tests and finally getting to see them pass! As we own

sighthounds, we always hope to see more sighthounds in the tracking world,

we have passed two sighthounds in a sparse field of sighthounds, a Podengo

and a Borzoi.

Friends. To our friends, one of whom really hates snakes. Ule placed a fake

snake on the way up a ditch with our snake fearing friend behind, coming

down one side of the ditch and looking up to see the snake - the scream that

erupted! To all the friends who don’t hesitate to go out in the worst of

weather with you to track; and to all the tracking stories that are exchanged

on test weekends.

Training. The day Connie (who does not like spiders) went to lay a track out at

a park in the taller grass in the morning with the dew on all the spider webs

with gigantic yellow spiders, the track was quite serpentine-like. The handler

was wondered why the dog was zig-zagging all over the place; an article was

put down the storm sewer, there was a ledge down there, and how long it

took the handler to figure out that the dog didn’t go to the storm sewer just

because; a new statue of a naked woman at the college and the way the dog

stopped and started to bark at the statue; a track was laid to deny the creek

right near the creek and the person laying a track for me, happened to do the

same thing, just a coincidence but pretty funny watching each the dog and

handler go over the creek and then back to the side with the turn; the people

you start in tracking who actually go on and get a title and the pride you feel

when they pass (and the critique you do in your head while they are in the

test: “don’t stand too firm, go with your dog on the corner, keep your lead off

the ground”, and when you realized you forgot to tell them one thing about

what to do at a test start; when they start the track at a test without asking

the judges if its ok to start – yikes!).

Exhibiting. As an exhibitor feeling the great highs and lows - passing joy and

the pain associated with failing. In the freezing cold with a Whippet who laid

down in the snow to get out of the wind; to one who stood under our legs as

the rain poured down; the unexpected amazement of one of our whippets

tracking in the pouring rain and swimming thru a creek to get to the end of the

Page 15: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

TDX, looked down at something and Connie not moving up to look fast

enough, the dog moved on, she looked down at the spot through water

streaked glasses and saw something yellow, a leaf she supposed, and followed

the dog out to miss the final yellow glove. The passing of a VST in the fall when

on the last leg, the favorite creatures, grasshoppers appeared and after

jumping like a grasshopper the dog finally said ok, I’ll go find the final article.

So many great judges who may be working in very adverse weather conditions

but who are still excited to see people pass on Sunday. A judge who still

remembers, when one of the whippets was doing a particularly poor

performance, Ule reached down into his vest, pulled out a whistle and failed

himself.

Pictures. To the great pictures Ule has gotten to remember each passer, the

always present “butt” shot. We keep a photo album of all the passing dogs and

handlers.

Finally….We hope everyone remembers to recall and enjoy the journey with

your dog to the NTI, all the stories and experiences you have had while

training and the wonderful companionship your dog brings to you off and on

the field. As dogs, like people too, some will have a good tracking day this

weekend and some may not, but these dogs are still our best friends.

AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONAL JUDGE

LUCI SEELEY

I was born in Tokyo, Japan as my dad was a

career Army soldier and my mother a Japanese

national. I grew up mostly in Germany as we had

3 tours there before my dad retired and we

settled in the United States. I met my husband

Ron and we married in 1973 moving to Florida

where we have lived for 43 years and spend a lot

of time out doors with our dogs tracking all year

long. In the hot summer months we go out very early and work short tracks to

keep up the dog’s stamina as well as our own.

In 1997 Ron gave me a Golden Retriever puppy and we named him

Meadowpond Oso Proud N Happy. His call name was Happy of course and he

sure lived up to his name. Happy taught me far more than I taught him. He

taught me patience and perseverance as we earned a UDX and a TDX together.

He taught me to have a sense of humor and made me humble. He was a

wonderful partner at the other end of the lead whether in the Obedience ring

or on the tracking field. I enjoyed the journey of tracking with him so much I

decided to become an AKC tracking judge, with some nudging from my

husband and Fran Smith. Along the way I also got the obedience bug and

applied for and became an obedience judge as well. It has been a lot of work

but a lot of fun and keeps me busy. I also work full time doing correspondence

for the state of Florida’s SChip program called Florida Healthy Kids and

Kidcare. We service the State’s children enrolled for subsidized health care

which is an extremely high stress, fast paced environment with deadlines

daily keeping me busy.

Page 17: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

I love and train two Golden Retriever males, Ozzie in Utility, TDX as well as

VST; and Stanley in beginning obedience and tracking as well. He shows a lot

of promise and sees the flag and takes off like a whirlwind; tail wagging like a

flag itself. I hold on and follow! I expect we will have a fun journey together as

we move along in both venues.

I am quite honored to judge the NTI this year and look forward to following

some great tracking dogs.

AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONAL JUDGE

RON SEELEY

I was born and raised in New York State and earned

a Bachelor of Science degree in Contracting &

Construction from Utica College a division of

Syracuse University. I have always enjoyed a love for

dogs and our family had several dogs throughout my

childhood. My breed of choice is the Golden

Retriever.

I first entered the sport of tracking around 1986 and

with the help of some local tracking enthusiasts, tracking became my passion. I

was fortunate to have been a partner with several of our dogs earning

multiple tracking titles on 5 dogs. The most memorable one came on my

birthday when I was part of a team that earned a CT which qualified us for the

National Tracking Invitational (NTI). I decided to give back to the sport of

tracking by becoming a judge and I am approved to judge all levels of tracking

for AKC & ASCA. My wife, Luci and I, also provide tracking instruction to a

group of tracking enthusiasts to help promote the sport.

When I am not judging tracking, I may be entered at a tracking event or

competing in the sport of obedience. I have had the pleasure of being a

partner with several wonderful dogs that have earned advanced obedience

titles up to UDX. As a way to give back to the sport of obedience, Luci and I

also teach obedience classes for all levels and we have recently become

obedience judges. I am a Provisional Novice judge and Luci is a Provisional

Open judge. I love being able to help others enjoy the various dog venues and

assist them on their journey. My other interest consists of coaching youth

baseball at the Little League High School and Travel Ball level.

HISTORY OF TRACKING

History of Tracking Events

In April 10, 1936, the first official "Regulations and Standard for

Obedience Test Field Trials" was published. The first licensed test

held in accordance with these regulations took place on June 13, 1936,

and appropriately enough, was held with the North Westchester Kennel

Club all-breed show at Mount Kisco, New York.

Tracking was originally part of the Utility class, and a dog had to pass a

separate tracking test in order to earn a UD. For roughly the first ten

years, tracking received one paragraph of description in the

regulations, which set out the barest basics of length and age of the

track. On the day of the test, the tracklayers were to walk the tracks,

deposit the article, and retrace their steps to remove all but the two

starting flags. By 1938, it was added that the tracklayer could not wear

rubber-soled shoes, and the dog had to be on a 30-40 foot leash and

work without help from the handler. By 1943, the tracklayers were

required to follow the track, deposit the article, and walk directly off

the course.

In 1947, tracking was made a separate class, and more detail began to

appear in the regulations: The tracklayers were required to wear

leather-soled shoes until they deposited the article, whereupon they

were to put on a pair of rubbers and walk off the course at a right

angle. The article was to be a leather glove or wallet. Finally, the dog

was permitted one additional chance to take the scent between the

starting flags, provided he had not passed the second flag. It is obvious

from the changes in the regulations that there must have been

considerable discussion of how a track was to be properly laid by the

tracklayer. Tracking and advanced tracking regulations were destined

eventually to swell, from the original single paragraph of description in

1936, to forty-five pages today.

Page 21: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

As early as 1947, and encouraged by Obedience Advisory Committees,

the tracking fraternity urged AKC to approve a more advanced type of

tracking test that would test a dog's ability to track a person over a

course that had aged for at least three hours and for about twice the

distance required by the Tracking Test. This advanced test, called

Tracking Dog Excellent, was approved by the AKC in 1979 and became

effective on March 1, 1980. The first TDX dog was a Dachshund, Gretel

Von Bupp Murr UD, who passed the Tracking Dog Excellent Test on

March 15 of that year. This dog was owned and handled by George

Richards of Sun City Center, Florida.

From the beginning of the sport, all tracking tests were held in fields

and open spaces. Due to urban pressures, these are fast disappearing in

many areas of the country. A new test, called Variable Surface

Tracking, was designed to utilize industrial and office parks, college

campuses, etc.

In 1995, Merrill Cohen laid the number one track at the first Variable

Surface Tracking Test on a beautiful, clear morning in Ellicott City,

Maryland. Darlene Ceretto competed on the track laid by Cohen, track

one (of six). "The tracks were the epitome of what VST is all about,"

said Ceretto. "Although none of us actually passed, all the dogs did a

remarkable and credible job, working with determination and

perseverance."

The following weekend Ceretto became the first exhibitor to put the

VST title on a dog, at an event held by the Northwest Obedience Club

of Glenview, Illinois. Her female German Shepherd Dog Sealair's

Raggedy Ann UD TDX, also became the first CT - Champion Tracker - a

designation awarded to dogs with all three tracking titles.

“HATTIE”

I bred and raised Hattie. I started her tracking on the driveway at 6

weeks of age. She was certified at 6 months and earned her TD at the

English Cocker National Specialty at age 10 months. She got her TDX a

year later at Rock Cut State Park in Illinois. She earned her VST at the

Kentucky Horse Park when she was 3. It was my 69th birthday present

from her. Hattie also has 3 Canadian tracking titles from tests in

Vancouver, Regina and Thunder Bay. In addition to tracking, Hattie and

I have earned titles in hunting, free style dancing, tricks, agility and

rally.

“TIMBER”

Timber’s talent and enthusiasm for this game make every track with him a

joy. He is my 3rd tracking dog and my first CT. His first puppy track was in my

driveway the day I brought him home and we haven’t looked back since. He

earned his TD at 8 months and his TDX at 2.5 years. Both on the first try and

while also actively competing in agility and obedience. He finished his first

MACH just 6 months after the TDX. He became the fourth Beagle to earn a

VST (and CT) when he was 5.

Since earning his CT, Timber has discovered 2 new ‘nose’ sports---Barn Hunt

and Nosework! Timber was the first Beagle to earn BH titles above Novice and

is still the only Beagle Barn Hunt Champion. He’s also LOVING Nosework. In

the last year he has earned his NW1 and NW2 and will be in his first NW3 trial

soon.

We would like to thank our mentor, Terry McGauley, who was instrumental in

our VST success. Her love for her student---both human and canine—and her

knowledge of scent are unsurpassed. We’d also like to thank everyone who

has laid tracks for us—especially Rachel Hawkins who laid most of Timber’s

puppy tracks and Cheryl Tisdale who had an uncanny knack for plotting exactly

the track we needed when we needed it. Finally, I want to thank Timber. I

Skip are my 1st 2 Pembroke Welsh Corgis and 1st 2 tracking

dogs. I tried tracking with Skip when I realized he always had

his nose down during walks. He loved to track from day 1.

When we got Allie she also used her nose constantly, so

she also started tracking and loved it. I also fell in love with it

and am amazed and fascinated by dogs’ ability to track! I am a

member of the Lakeshore Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club and

Moraine Tracking Club. I enjoy being active in the sport and

have chaired and laid track for many tests over the years. I

learn so much from observing my dogs and other tracking

teams track and enjoy the people and camaraderie in the

tracking community. I was thrilled to receive invitations to the

NTI and still can’t believe Allie’s entry was drawn. We’re

looking forward to an exciting experience.

“JULOT”

Julot, born in Peggy Richter's kennel in December, 2003, has been certified by

California Rescue Dog Association as a mission-ready search and rescue trailing

dog since his second birthday. He is also a member of the Napa County

Sheriff's Volunteer SAR Team. Training with search canine units, Julot has

"found" over 200 people, including persons who were in cars, waded up

streams deep enough that he had to swim while scenting, in wilderness and

urban areas, on trails both fresh and up to six days old.

Julot has been deployed on 38 actual searches for missing people and his

efforts have often been beneficial. He has a fan club of many law enforcement

officers as well as his SAR team members. He loves the attention in

demonstrations at schools, and to strut to music in freestyle classes. Once in a

helicopter, he loves flying and peering out the open door.

Along the way Julot has acquired his CT and SAR-W titles. This year when the

Napa VST did not fill, he entered and passed a second time.

Julot is the model for the children's picture book I wrote and illustrated Stop

and Stay Put: A Guide to Safer adventures Outdoors.

“RUDY”

“Rudy” is a 9yr old West Highland White Terrier. He is my 2nd Westie, but my

1st tracking dog. I wanted to track with the 1st one but he had other plans.

“Rudy” was named from the movie “Rudy”. He was born the “little guy”,

requiring considerable nursing care to get his feet on the ground. At 7 months

old, spoiled rotten and lacking self-confidence, his breeder brought him to Play

Dog Excellent, the dog daycare and training center where I am a managing

partner to get help with his social skills both human and canine. Although he

was “snobby and shy”, I immediately recognized that he was incredibly smart

and had the drive of a herding dog. (My other breed is cattle dogs) By the end

of that week, he had moved in!

Rudy and I started tracking in January, certified in June and passed our TD at

the Westie Centennial Specialty in September. He earned his TDX 2 years later,

but we spent the next 5 years fixing my early training errors. Ru passed his

VST this April. Picking up that final article was the most incredible feeling in

the world!

Rudy is an incredibly versatile guy, but of all the things he does, “Huntin

Hotdogs” is what he loves most. Good thing, because It’s my favorite too!

CT GALLERY'S HEART HEALING VALENTINE HSAS

“VALENTINE”

We picked up Valentine in Illinois on August 7, 2015, just short of her 6

month birthday. She had her first tracking lesson from Sally Nesbitt on

August 26th, and was certified on Oct. 13th.

Valentine ran her TD January 20th, in San Diego, her TDX February

10th in San Diego and her VST on February 28th in Las Vegas. At 12

months 14 days of age she had become the youngest Champion

Tracker. She did the trifecta in a total of 3 tests over a 39 day period.

WOW!

Valentine was bred by Kathleen Matela and Julie Pierce. Her dam is

Kiosan's Rain, an import from Sweden, owned by Kathleen Matela of

Marseilles, Illinois. Her sire is Kimba Comme Un Reve Noir, a Hungarian

Champion owned by Vig Annamaria of Budapest Hungary.

A special shout out to Carla Wolter, our friend, for helping us

obtain this lovely, bright, instinctive young bitch.

Valentine is owned and loved by Paula and Kermit Harcos of La Jolla, CA

We consider ourselves to be the most fortunate tracking people in the

USA.

“MINSK”

Minsk and my journey together began in June 2007 and has spanned

such a sweeping panorama of experiences, people that we have met,

and the wonderful clubs that we would have never had the privilege to

know. It is difficult to impossible to select any given mark as the

beginning, turning point, or conclusion of our quest. The very start can

be marked with Woody Thurman and his wife Judi breeding my

exceptional partner and to a tracking seminar held in the 1990’s with

Bernie and Donna Thompson which started the dream of achieving

those wonderful tracking titles and the rare but elusive Champion

Tracker. Let us not forget to participate in an AKC National Tracking

Invitational was added to that wish list. Minsk has fulfilled my

dreams. She has taught me so much and I am still learning from her,

although her greatest gift was the revelation of a universal truth. This

insightful knowledge occurred while driving home from Michigan it was,

“Pass or fail, I love tracking Minsk.” To my partner may I always say,

“Let’s go tracking and have some fun!”

“LIBBY”

We are blessed to have our Libby. She’s in love with all of her AKC

performance events. Lately, we are trying to get her Agility Excellent

Standard Preferred title and her VCD3. Her preferred order of events is

Tracking, Agility, and Obedience. Libby and her Uncle Oliver track

several times a week. We mostly do short happy tracks and leave the

fields each day, with each wanting for more. Sundays, we track with

the Glenbard All Breed Obedience Club with Judges John and Darlene

Barnard. Monday evening is Obedience at Glenbard. Tuesday is Agility

at Lyons. We use only 100% “positive” training methods. Libby’s first

two-turn track was made when she was just 12 weeks old. She’s

always enthusiastic and her lead is only needed for me to hold her back,

so the judges can keep up with her on her track. I’m so excited and

honored to pull out her pink “retired” CT harness from her trophy case

to participate in the 2016 - AKC National Tracking Invitational event.

“SYDNEY”

Dalmatians on the whole are enthusiastic trackers and of the dogs I have

trained, none has been more so than Sydney. She was quick to learn and

always happy to please.

Having Dalmatians for almost forty years and being introduced to tracking

thirty years ago in 1986, I have had the privilege of training a dozen dogs of

the breed. We started our journey with dogs in obedience and after our first

dog won at her first trial over a class of 54, we were hooked! Well after Lucky

earned her UD, tracking seemed like a good way to keep her active. It was a

learning experience if only for Tom. After that all of our dogs started tracking

as puppies.

Over the years, by attending seminars, trying new training methods and with

the support of fellow trackers at Southwest Tracking Association, training

partners and judges who have provided advice and insight into the sport,

Sydney became the second of our dogs to earn at CT in September of 2008, at

2-1/2 years of age. She has been most loyal, a great pal and just fun to just

watch her work.

It’s an honor to have been drawn to participate in the 2016 National Tracking

Invitational and look forward to the experience.

“TAMU”

Tamu is an 8 1/2 year old Basenji. He started his career in the conformation ring where he earned his champion conformation title. We moved on to the Rally Obedience ring earning a Rally Excellent title. At that point, we had two of three qualifying titles for the Basenji Club of America Versatile Basenji Program and decided to go for it. That’s when we discovered tracking. Tamu really loves to track. He earned his TD, which qualified him for Versatile Basenji. He has since proceeded to earn a TDX, VST, and CT. He is the only Basenji in this country to ever earn a VST and CT. Just recently he completed his first agility title, Novice Agility. Aside from his accomplishments in the show ring and in performance venues, Tamu is a wonderful dear friend and companion always ready for new experiences or a romp in the yard. He is a wonderful brother to two older Basenjis and a younger dog.

CT RIESENRAD’S MIDNIGHT RENDEZVOUS VCD1 CDX RN OJP

“JETTA”

Jetta was born on 04/30/09, and carefully selected for me and bred by Tarja Ahlgren of “Riesenrad Giants”. She has the genetics, work ethic and a SUPER plus was that I knew there were two CT Giants in her lines. We started tracking almost as soon as we became partners-in-crime (there is a story behind that). Jetta is very versatile and trained in tracking (including a bit of Bed Bug Detection work), conformation, obedience and agility. Tracking just took over and she is obsessed with it – she got her TD on the first try, her VST on the second try and the TDX took a bit longer (I have holes in some clothing to exhibit the fact that I did NOT trust or follow her and she would have NONE of that).

Jetta is very social and confident, is the queen of the household (ask the boys), loves to swim and guards the house in her spare time (what spare time she has). Jetta’s favorite toy is a tennis ball (fresh is best). She knows if there is one within a mile and will destroy any and everything in order to get to that ball.

She has not formally tracked in a while, nevertheless, we plan on having a blast with all of our friends and supporters at the NTI.

She says GOOD LUCK to everyone – and gifts of tennis balls and ice cream are acceptable.

Sadie came to me sight unseen (only had

pictures of her) from Minnesota when she was

somewhere around 8-9 weeks old. She was my

first English Cocker Spaniel and has been a

joy. Her breeder, Marge Schultz, had started her

tracking before she came to me and we continued

– tracking is her favorite sport. She was just over 1 year old when she got her

TD in 2008 and got her TDX a year later in 2009. VST was harder and took us

2 years in 2011. One brag I have is she passed her TD, TDX, and VST on the

first try.

In addition to tracking, Sadie and I have participated in agility, rally and

obedience – even though she thinks stays are optional. She earned her MACH

last December after having come up 0.01 points short at the previous trial. I

have had so much fun training and just having Sadie.

“GRIFFIN”

Griffin, born September 11, 2007, came into being through an accidental

mating between Xuma Von Grunheide (Black German Shepherd Bitch) and

Seadrifts Pipers Amazing Grace (German Shorthaired Pointer Dog). He is a fine

hunting dog with a strong work ethic, making him an excellent tracking dog.

Griffin started wilderness tracking as a puppy, followed by urban and field

tracking; he earned his first TD title with the Mixed Breed Dog Club of America

in 2012 followed by the MBDCA TDX in December 2013.

Griffin has successfully tracked two lost dogs and has attained local media

coverage for his tracking and search and rescue abilities. He is sociable, very

athletic, agile, muscularly fit, and strong so he also enjoys hiking, swimming

Page 47: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

and a fast game of Frisbee. He loves to proudly carry his end article all the

way back to the truck.

When the opportunity arose to track as an All American with the AKC, we had

to jump on it, as Griffin aspires to attain the CT status of his (now late) pack

brother, CT Orrin von Bullinger CKC TCH.

On November 9th, 2014, Griffin passed on his first attempt for a TD title in Bow,

Washington, with the Chuckanut Dog Training Club. On April 5th, 2015, Griffin

passed his TDX in Boise, Idaho, with the Idaho Capital City Kennel Club. This

was his second attempt at a TDX, as his partner (me) let him down in

Wenatchee on March 8th 2015, at the Wenatchee Kennel Club Trial in

Washington. He was honored to be the second All American to earn the TDX

title, and was recognized for his achievement in the AKC Canine Partners

Spotlight.

On October 4, 2015, Griffin became the first All

American Dog to earn the prestigious CT Title

at the VST test held by the Great Salt Lake Dog

Training Club. The Club held the test on the

campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake

City. It has been truly rewarding to bring Griffin through his TD, TDX, and VST

in under one year, and here now, a year later, to be honored with the

opportunity to enter the prestigious National Tracking Invitational.

Griffin is not interested in retirement, and is currently being trained further in

Tracking, Nosework, Disaster Dog, and Search and Rescue.

I cannot thank Penny Kurz enough for sharing our dream and believing in

Penny perfectly in sync, the two of them cruised through the track in under 14

minutes. Our invitation to the 2016 AKC National Tracking Championship is

extra special, as Mariner is the only GCH Silver of any breed to earn a CT – I

am so proud with of his versatility!

Mariner was Top 10 Breed & All-Breed 2007 &

Riser’s tracking career has been an interesting one. From his first Tracking Dog

they wouldn’t leave their nest, which caused his failure. For his first VST

attempt this year, I was called the day before the test as the Alternate and

informed an additional track would be plotted and I could have as a test track if

not used by other exhibitors. Riser and I made the treacherous journey

through blinding wind, snow, rain, fog, etc. to Champaign, IL where he was

able to participate as the final track of the day. This track had numerous

track was near a baseball field where a

through all the challenging scents and

only failed as he missed the final

didn’t enjoy Illinois as a State to pass in

Due to the limited availability of tests that allowed All-

we submitted: “At age 13 she is showing all those

youngsters how this game works.” Again we had to wait for a TDX that

allowed All Americans. Less than 6 months later, Maddie earned her TDX, to

is the hardest place to pass a TDX. Lots of

hills, trees and our first article was in the

trees by an old barb wire fence. I was happy

for the breather. His track 940 yards (April

12, 2009) and was done under 14

minutes. He was the only TDX dog to qualify that at that test.

VST was the hardest thing to train for. We used Cal State Hayward a lot. Which

meant that articles would be picked up and people all over the track. It was a

total of 5 years of training, and 3 attempts in that time before we finally past.

It was fantastic and I can remember every step of the track. It was March 9th

2014 at the Veterans Home in Yountville, CA. and we were the first pass for

Judges, Jane Jonas (my Mentor) and Roy Fair. This was the most amazing

track we have EVER done!

Dillon passed his VST/CT on October 11, 2015 at the Des Moines Obedience

Training Club’s Tracking Test at the DMAC College. Judges, Jerry Lewis and

Marge Schultz.

I consider Dillon to be that once in a lifetime dog. He so loves to please.

“DIGBY“

Thanks to what I had learned from my first tracking Pembroke, Digby had the

benefit of an earlier start and different handler mistakes. From his first puppy

tracks he made it clear that he loved this activity. Finding a reason for him to

stop at articles proved a challenge as he just wanted to keep going.

While his article indications became stellar, that enthusiasm for tracking

remains intact 12 years later, and the promise of going tracking still brings a

happy sparkle to his eyes.

Page 59: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

He earned his VST on his first try in 19

minutes. Which barely gave me time to

recognize what was happening before he

was nosing the final article. As my first

CT, first herding High In Trial and first

rally High Combined, he has provided me

with many cherished memories as we

continue to track into his senior years.

My thanks to my fellow trackers and their dogs who have added so much to my

knowledge and appreciation of our companions’ olfactory capabilities. The

longer I do this, the more I am amazed at what our dogs are capable of doing

when we don’t get in their way.

Thank you to AKC and the many workers who are providing this special

opportunity -- and Good Luck to all the participants!

“SOPHIE“

My name is Sophie and I was found

running on the streets in Dallas when I

was about 6 months old. The city

shelter picked me up and they called

shepherd rescue and my foster mom

came for me. I lived with her for 3

months before mom found me

on petfinder.com. I was very scared at

first, but the next day mom took me

out to the fields and showed me how to find things with my nose. I got

certified 2 months later on the day before the tracking test closed, and I got

my TD on my first try a week after my first birthday, 78 days after I went to

live with mom. I passed the VST in Houston 3 1/2 years later. I then took a

break from tracking tests to get my CD and my excellent agility titles. I passed

the TDX last fall, having passed all 3 tracking tests in my great home state of

Page 60: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

Texas. I also love swimming in the lake and running in the dog park. I am now

working on my master agility titles.

RANDY CAPSEL & CHERYL CLARK

CT TRAILWIND'S REBOUND REX CD BN RA

“REX“

Rex returned from what we believed was his “forever home” at 6 ½ years of age.

Integration into our home went well, but Rex needed a job to do, so shortly after arriving

Cheryl began tracking with him. Saying he took to this new adventure with gusto would be an

understatement! Training was briefly

interrupted for 4 months during Cheryl’s foot surgery (pure agony for both), but when back

to work, he completed his CT in 13 months at just under 9 years of age, passing

the TD, TDX and VST all on his first try.

Cheryl and Rex have also accumulated obedience and rally titles and Randy is

working Rex in the field for future hunting tests. Rex is certainly not slowing down and still gets to track on occasion while continuing training in obedience

and rally.

“JAKE“

Jake (CT Jake of Rhonels VCD3 RE JH AX OAJ MXP MJP) is the first dog I have

ever owned in my entire life

When he came home at 10 weeks old on September 16, 2007 I didn't even

know what the AKC CGC was and here I am writing a biography for him for the

2016 Tracking Invitational.

Page 61: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

Jake is my accidental performance dog

and a versatile one at that as proven

by being one of only 74 VCD3 Goldens

and one of only 81 Goldens ever to

have Major AKC titles in 4 different

performance venues.

His real love is Tracking, We took our first lesson in July, 2010 and certified

after 10 lessons in October, 2010. He passed his TD test in September, 2011

and 12 training tracks later passed the first TDX we entered in April, 2012.

We took about 2 years off from tracking after his TDX because he didn't quite

like asphalt. However, due to encouragement from our tracking trainer (Carla

Ogert) who always believed that Jake would become a CT, I decided to go back

to training.

In September, 2014 we started VST training in earnest. While we had our ups

and downs we persevered and Jake became a CT on April 17, 2016.

Jake has taken me on a journey of a lifetime but his best title of all is "Heart

Dog Extraordinaire".

“CHUI“

Chui came to me in 2009 at the age of five

months. He came to fill a void in my heart. He

did just that and showed me that a person can

have more than one heart dog in their lifetime. I

am so grateful to have him at my side.

Chui earned his TD in 2010 and his TDX one year

later. He was the first dog I had the opportunity

to run in a VST test. It took a great deal of

Page 62: 2016 AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONALimages.akc.org/pdf/events/tracking/NTI_Catalog_2016...Catalog Commemorative Maroon T-Shirt VETERINARY SERVICE JEFFERSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL 24-HOUR

learning, patience and believing that we could do it to accomplish his CT. It

was worth the journey. Our photo was taken the day he passed, I couldn't

stop smiling! Chui and I also train and compete in agility, obedience, rally and

herding.
