LETTER FROM OUR CEO AND PRESIDENT

Dear Friend of Conservation,

Our 2016 annual report represents significant progress towards our ambitious strategic plan goals. We’re delighted to share with you the results of collaboration between our motivated donor community, our hardworking Board of Directors, and our dedicated staff.

Our strategic plan contains four main goals:

1. Strengthen Colorado’s conservation ethic by connecting people with Colorado’s conserved lands. This year, we piloted a year-long program for young professionals in public policy, business, and philanthropy, and exposed them to our industry’s inner workings, challenges, and opportunities. The program is designed to inspire these future leaders to be advocates for land conservation throughout their careers.

2. Conserve land and natural resources that define Colorado and the quality of life enjoyed by its citizens. This year we completed 20 new conservation projects in seven counties, totaling over 18,000 new acres conserved. We also successfully monitored and stewarded nearly 400,000 acres of easements and completed three restoration projects on land already conserved.

3. Build an enduring institution through organizational excellence that can keep the promise of perpetuity. We created a financial modeling tool that can help predict future challenges in our long-term sustainability, allowing us to make necessary adjustments far in advance. This model is both scalable and replicable to our industry.

4. Lead and support the evolution of the land trust industry in Colorado and the nation. We launched a program to explore future opportunities for collaboration and efficiency among land trust partners that is currently being introduced to statewide audiences.

We are inspired by Colorado’s exceptional quality of life and are honored to conduct this work on behalf of Colorado’s land and its people.

Sincerely,

Tony Caligiuri

WHAT WE DOColorado Open Lands works with landowners and community partners to permanently conserve and steward Colorado’s most important land and water resources.

WHY WE DO ITProtecting Colorado’s most important landscapes and waterways is in the interest of all Coloradans- protecting fish and wildlife, iconic views, healthy waterways, local food, Western culture, rural economies, and recreation opportunities, and keeping safe all that makes Colorado special. That’s the promise of Colorado Open Lands.

HOW YOU HELPEvery moment you spend in Colorado’s magnificent open landscapes deepens your connection with the land. When you include friends and family in your adventures, you help build and strengthen our state’s land ethic and ensure an informed and engaged public who deeply values the land for generations to come. You can even help the people and programs who are working to provide all Coloradans with an incredible, land-based quality of life without taking a step outside. Choose to purchase products and experiences from conserved lands and support your local land trust and open space initiatives. Together, we can keep Colorado open!

spotlight on gunnison sage-grouseColorado Open Lands has taken a leading role in protecting one of Colorado’s most significant threatened species, the Gunnison Sage-grouse, through a targeted effort to protect key habitat and breeding grounds of this iconic Western bird in the Gunnison Valley.

Working with the US Department of Agriculture and local partner Gunnison Ranchland Legacy Trust, COL is working with dozens of local ranchers to permanently protect thousands of acres of critical habitat while also keeping these lands in active agricultural production.

“Growing up cattle ranching, I know that good stewardship of the land and wildlife work well together. We want to see these important places protected as much as we want to assure ranching is a viable option for our kids and grandkids. And we are glad to know that Colorado Open Lands cares equally about these issues,” said Stacy McPhail of Gunnison Ranchland Legacy Trust.

“Our ultimate goal is to see this bird species recovered to the point that it can be removed as a listed threatened species. That would be a great success story for the wildlife and the communities that are impacted,” said COL Conservation Project Manager John Peters.

Colorado Open Lands permanently protected these

lands in Fiscal year 2016

“We did our first easement in 2003, and it’s held by Colorado Open Lands. The additional 320 acres we put in as part of that transaction is held by Colorado Open Lands and so then when we did another easement last year, we didn’t even consider anybody else. It’s gotta be Colorado Open Lands.

Colorado Open Lands doesn’t come in with some sort of a set agenda that they’re trying to accomplish. They’re trying to help you preserve the land in the way you want to do it. It’s 100% how can we make this work for you the landowner – and that’s everything.

We can say with pride that our land is like it’s gonna be and we can guarantee it. It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks or decides or anything else, we’ve set the stage for it to stay exactly like it is.”

-Burt Guerreri, owner of Mill Creek Ranch with wife Sandy
