Dear Friends of Janus,

Last year, I talked in this report about the Miracles that happen daily in our programs. Looking ahead, our focus is on HOPE—and Hope is something we all need right now. Last summer, we lost four youth to overdose, suicide and domestic violence, and we experienced one of the worst winters ever, especially for homeless youth living on the streets. But we cannot let the darkness overtake the light. I see Hope in our newly created Street Outreach Team in Cowlitz County, Washington where workers have been walking 4-10 miles daily to find homeless youth. With tremendous community support, they have made over 250 contacts, providing Hope to youth for a way off the streets. Insights Teen Parent program worked with 258 young moms and their infant children last year providing Hope that these kids will grow up healthy and loved and ready to drive their parent crazy when they get to be teenagers. Then there’s Village Market—where we gave over 18,542 pieces of free fruit to neighborhood kids, many of whom are immigrant children. And at our Hope Partnership program in MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility, 7 of our Youth Scholarships were awarded to these incarcerated youth. Finally, you have to see Hope in our work, providing shelter for 70 homeless youth every winter night. Please join us in supporting and advocating for our youth—providing the Hope they deserve.

HOPE PARTNERSHIPHope Partnership received Janus’ Helen Reser Bakkensen Award for its work at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility. The program offers classes in creative writing, visual arts, arts and crafts, art and literacy, study skills, leadership development and communication, employment and independent living skills, cultural studies and Toastermasters.

INSIGHTS Staff drove 57,000 miles to serve 258 families, completing 3,745 home visits. Staff and moms developed a safety card to give to young parents who may be in unhealthy relationships. All home visiting staff received specialized training in the Strong Moms Project which helps them provide age and developmentally appropriate domestic violence and healthy relationship information to young parents. 104 households received rental assistance.

VILLAGE GARDENSStaff led 80 hours of farm training for youth and offered 40 cooking and nutrition workshops. Food Works produced 24,814 pounds of food, generated $33,911 in produce sales, and had its longest Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The Village Market served an average of 440 customers daily and gave out 18,542 pieces of fruit to kids. The New Columbia Farmers Market had 17 vendors from 8 countries with sales of $12,000 benefiting the New Columbia residents.

FUNDRAISERSDinner In The Vines–200 guests enjoyed live jazz and a four-course meal at ArborBrook Vineyards. Herm Gilliam Golf Tournament for Kids—100 golfers enjoyed an afternoon of golf at Riverside Golf and Country Club while raising money for children and their families.

NEW PROGRAMS Harry’s Mother expanded its youth crisis program to a new location, “East County Reception Center.” Our Washington programs expanded street outreach to serve Cowlitz County youth and lauched its “Connections” program, helping vulnerable youth with disabilities ages 18-25 obtain housing. The First Lady of Washington, Trudi Inslee, met with The Perch staff and youth as part of her campaign to end youth homelessness in Washington.

SCHOLARSHIPSThe Scholarships for Success program awarded 12 scholarships in 2016. These scholarships are meant to fill in the gaps for students who are struggling to finance their education without financial support from their families. The 12 recipients will use the scholarships to help pay for tuition, books, rent and tools for an apprenticeship program.

In November, 10-year old Quentin Brown received the Janus Stars for Kids Award which recognizes individuals who make a difference for our youth. Each year on his birthday, Quentin asks family members to give him gifts that he can donate to our homeless youth. Rather than getting toys and games, Quentin gets socks, water bottles, hats and scarfs that he takes down to the Janus office. By thinking of the needs of others, Quentin sets an example for his peers, family and community, showing the impact kids have on helping other kids.

As a member of Hope Partnership for 4 years, Gustavo has grown from participant to leader. He made the transition by sharpening his communication skills through the Hope Partnership Toastmaster chapter, “HopeMasters,” where he achieved the Competent Communicator and Competent Leadership awards. Having learned to express himself professionally, Gustavo moved on to become Vice President of Education for the Toastmaster club, inspiring youth to complete their awards. Gustavo is an enthusiastic ambassador for Hope Partnership, serving on the Youth Hope Advisory Council, leading visitor tours and recruiting new youth to the program. As an practitioner of Non-Violent Communication and Restorative Justice, Gustavo is an outstanding role model for both youth and staff. A recipient of two Janus scholarship awards, Gustavo completed classes in exercise science, engineering, art and received his Personal Trainer Certificate. He always strives to make himself and the world better.
