Janus’ J-1 Work and Travel Program is designed to promote better understanding and improve communications between people in the United States and other nations throughout the world.

Exchanges:Janus achieves this objective by encouraging participation in a host of activities that facilitate the sharing of language, culture, or history of the visitor’s home country, as well as activities that will acquaint participants with American society, culture, and institutions.

Purpose of the Program

General Program DescriptionStipend – hourly rate basis

• Exchange Visitors will get paid an hourly rate to work at their designated employer, where they will interact with a diverse group of people and get exposure to the American way of life. For “Janus-placed” jobs, the hourly rate and job terms will be provided by Janus. For “self-placed” jobs, the hourly rate and job terms will be provided to the participant by the Janus-approved Hospitality employer.

Duration • Program lasts up to 4 months, and allows for an additional

month of travel in the United States.Janus provides visitors with multiple opportunities to learn about American culture, society, and institutions.

Eligibility• Eligible Program Participants must be post-secondary

students actively pursuing a degree or a full-time course of study at an accredited educational institution, or as that status is defined in the visitor’s home country.

• Program participation is limited to the participant’s summer vacation.

*Students who have completed their degree are no longer eligible.*Students attending a vocational school are not eligible to participate in the Program.

With over 5 years of experience in assisting thousands of Work and Travel Program participants, Janus has fully trained staff to provide the guidance and assistance you need to successfully complete the terms of this exchange visitor program. You will receive emails and/or phone calls throughout your stay so that we can monitor your progress, as well as see if you are having any problems or need assistance in achieving the objectives and terms of this Program.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

1) The visitor is attempting in good faith to participate in the pre-arranged cross-cultural opportunities;

2) The visitor is meeting the guidelines for making the most of his/her employment opportunity;

3) The visitor is generally complying with the terms of his/her visa;

4) The visitor is making progress in successfully adjusting to their new job and environment; and

5) The visitor’s address and telephone number are up to date.

Program Fees• Housing and Job Agreement Deposit-

Deposit will be Refunded upon successful completion of Job Terms, if your employer agrees that housing policies have been met and the housing has been returned in acceptable condition. This deposit is not required by us for self-placement jobs, but a deposit may be required by the employer/housing you select.

PROGRAM FEES

• I-901 SEVIS Fee – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security now requires the collection of this fee to help cover the costs of administering the program. This fee must be paid after you obtain your DS-2019, and you will need to present the receipt for this at your consulate interview and when entering the U.S. As a service, Janus may collect and handle your payment fee for you. See your Participant Manual for more information.

Other Potential Costs

• Housing / Living Cost – For Janus-sponsored jobs, we arrange to provide reasonably priced housing at or near our properties at approximately $11 - $15 per day. For self-placed jobs, housing location and price will be determined by you and your employer.

• Contingency Money – Whether participating in a Janus-placed or self-placed job, students are advised to bring $500 USD (we recommend that most of this amount be in U.S. Traveler’s checks to avoid the risk of loss or theft) to use in spending for food, clothes and other basic necessities for the first month of stay in the United States. The money might also be used for hotel accommodation and transportation to job site (depending on the date of arrival).

Estimated Work Financials• Hourly Rates-Visitors earn at least $7.25 per regular

hour worked. Visitors assigned as Servers gets paid from $2.50 per regular hour worked. They get their money through tips.

• Overtime – Visitors can get paid overtime hours at some locations (not Theme Parks or seasonal employers) if the visitor worked more than 40 hours per week.

• Overtime per hour = 1.5 x regular rate• Second Job – Allowed but not to interfere

with primary job.

BASIC FACTS

Generally, employers may not make deductions other than local, state and federal payroll taxes

from employee pay that would reduce the employee’s regular wage below the statutory minimum. Tipped employees may be paid a

separate, lower minimum wage, and given credit for their tips

Program Information • To enter the USA, you must have a valid DS-2019 + J1 visa

Janus will charge postage and handling fees to invalidate and replace a lost DS 2019. Postage and handling fees also apply if you want to change the dates written on your DS -2019. • Program End Date = DS-2019 End Date = Last Day

of Employment* Your program ends on the expiration date printed on your DS-2019. If you want to extend your employment, you need to contact Janus. If you do not extend your program, you are not legally allowed to work in the United States.*• Maximum Program Duration = 4 months

(including extension)• 30 day travel period begins after DS-2019 End

Program Cancellation Your DS-2019 and your J-1 Work and Travel Sponsorship can be withdrawn if you are:• Involved in any Illegal Activities• Fail to follow Janus or Employer Procedures

Social Security Number• To be able to work in the United States, you are required to obtain a Social Security Number.

• Before you get your first paycheck, you must first present a Social Security Application Letter showing that you have already applied for a Social Security Number.

* Remember that according to the new rules of the Social Security Office, J-1 students must wait 10 business days after arrival before applying for a Social Security Number. Paychecks will probably be received after 3 – 4 weeks from first day of work*

Health Insurance

• All participants must have Health Insurance coverage

• The cost of the insurance policy is included in your program fees

• Insurance coverage is valid for the dates on your form DS-2019

• Janus will provide you with a copy of your insurance ID card and policy information in your DS-2019 folder from

• Always carry your insurance ID card with you in case of an emergency!

Seeking Medical Treatment

• If you visit a doctor’s office or Urgent Care Center/Walk-In Clinic, you are responsible for paying a $100 deductible for the treatment.

• If you visit an emergency room for a non-emergency procedure, you are responsible for paying a $250 Deductible for the treatment.

• Bring a small first aid kit and medicine with you to cover basic injuries and illnesses

• Call insurance company toll free number or visit their website for pre-authorization before any visit to the doctor or if you have questions about your policy

• Pre-existing conditions are not covered!

Realistic Expectations:*Please expect that your first few weeks in the U.S. may

be difficult as you adjust to both your job and the cultural differences. Call our toll-free number if you need assistance during this time.*

• Most of our Work and Travel jobs are NOT located in big cities.

• This is not a vacation. These are real jobs and they are going to be challenging and difficult. If you are not prepared to work hard like other employees, you will not succeed in this program.

• If your expectations are to make a huge amount of $$ during the Program, then this Program is not for you.

* If you intend to leave your employer and not fulfill your Job Agreement commitment, then your participation in the Program will be cancelled, and you will need to return home early. Your employer has agreed to hold a job open for you, until you are scheduled to arrive, and you are obligated to honor your Agreement with your employer. *

Employment TerminationWritten and/or verbal warnings: Exchange

visitors will receive warnings for unacceptable performance at work or inside the housing facility. The following are good examples:

• Consistently being late for work• Not attending work when scheduled without valid

excuse. If EV is sick, he/she must present a doctor’s report stating why he/she cannot work that day.

• Insubordination to the manager.

Physical and Psychological Conditions: If an Exchange Visitor has physical or psychological conditions that are harmful to the Exchange Visitor’s health and safety based on doctor’s recommendation, Janus International has the prerogative to cancel the program immediately.
