We are entered into the season of Great Lent, also known as the Great Fast(Saumo-Rabo). The purpose of Great Lent is to prepare the believers tocommemorate and to enter in to the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus.Lent is a call to grow into the discipleship of Jesus through a disciplined life.This is a period to identify with the alternative path of Jesus and his crossand passion. This is an annual opportunity to self-examine the eminence ofour Christian discipline. Our Late Rt. Rev. Zacharias Mar TheophilusSuffragan Metropolitan Thirumeni in his book ìRoots and Wingsî felt thatìLent is a time in which we especially wait upon the Lord in fellowship andtransformed to fulfill His will. Some restrictions regarding food may beobserved as self-imposed discipline which would certainly facilitateconcentration, (but) more importantly leading to a feeling of deep concernfor the hungry and poor and a real sense of self denialî.

In Mar Thoma Syrian Church, we observe 50 days of lent before Easter.This include 40 days in which our Lord fasted and prayed in the wildernessof Judea (Mt.4:2, Mk 1:13, Lk 4:2) and 10 days to commemorate thepassion and death of Christ.I exhort you to observe this lent by avoiding ourluxuries and contributing the same for the charity. We have already startedour lenten prayers. I request your active participation in all the observancesand services of the lent and Passion Week.

Our diocesan Episcope Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Makarios Thirumeni isgetting transferred to ChennaiñBangalore diocese from 1st April 2016onwards. I express my sincere gratitude for his spiritual guidance andservice particularly for our Church.

This year also we got the opportunity to celebrate the harvest festival in afestival mood. I would like to extend my thanks to all the members of ourparish, especially the various convenors who had helped immensely.I humbly remind you to close all arrears in relation with subscription and allother dues before finishing this financial year. I would like tocongratulate and thank the 2015-16 office bearers and executivemembers for their valuable and dedicated services.

I express my appreciation to those who have participated and supported inthe Aluva-Ernakulam-Kochi Youth Camp which was held at FranciscanCentre Karakutty, Angamaly from 12th to 14th February 2016. I wish all theparticipants to lead an effective civic life with Christ in their family, churchand society. I congratulate all Sevikasangam members those who haveparticipated and succeeded in the biological farming contest.I request all the parents and Sunday school teachers to encourage yourchildren to regularly attend the Holy Communion services and help them tounderstand the history, faith, rituals and traditions of the Church.

I pray for all my young friends those who are preparing for theirexaminations especially for the students of Class X and Class XII. I wishthem all the very best. I want to say that all the candidates take this Examperiod as an opportunity for self-growth through hard work, keenness andtake it as in a game spirit and avoid all kinds of anxieties. You mustremember what Paul said, ìI can do all things through Christ whostrengthens meî (Philippians 4:13).At the same time every students shouldhave a clear-cut vision about his/her future talents, choices andresponsibilities in relation with the church and society. Swami Vivekanandarightly said, ìI call him a traitor, who having been educated at the cost ofsociety pays least heed to it.î

Critical thought and reflection have an important role to maintain andstrengthen an open, tolerant democratic public sphere. Unfortunatelyrecent Hyderabad University and JNU issues reveals that the behaviour ofthe State and its apparatus is not to encourage and helpful to strengthensuch a kind of a public sphere. Here the youth and students are thescapegoats of the fascist politicians in the name of pseudo patriotism andcultural nationalism. The cunning politicians are using this opportunity as tospread the virus of communal divisions to make political mileage.As a Christian we have the responsibility to concern on this issues andprayer to build a democracy based on love, tolerance, freedom andpeaceful coexistence between the citizens.
