The economy of the United States continues to improve, and REALTOR® organizations at every level have a unique opportunity to position members as experts and provide the platform to find sound U.S. investments. In 2014, over $100 billion in U.S. home sales were purchased by foreign buyers, and over $40 billion in commercial properties. Data forecasts indicate more of an increase this year. In March, NAR took unprecedented action by hosting the NAR - United States Pavilion at MIPIM which showcased U.S. markets and members at one of the largest international real estate events in the world.

MIPIM brings together the most influential players from all international property sectors - office, residential, retail, healthcare, sport, logistics and industrial, offering unrivalled access to the greatest number of development projects and sources of capital worldwide. The event is held each March in Cannes, France. To put this into perspective, MIPIM 2015 drew over 21,000 attendees from more than 90 countries, and included 2,400 exhibiting companies and 4,800 investors.

As First Vice President, I attended MIPIM in 2013; finding U.S.-specific business was almost impossible. That was eye-opening to me and it was then I knew NAR had a significant role to play. NAR’s Pavilion was a success: It created REALTOR® brand awareness, demonstrated commitment to commercial members and promoted vital communities in locations such as Miami, Illinois, and Birmingham, along with the educational power of our affiliate organizations. Thanks to NAR, the United States gained a high profile at this global forum and many business relationships were initiated. Building on our success for 2016, we are expanding our footprint, creating opportunities for more associations to participate.

This opportunity is not about your association. Rather it’s about your association’s role as an economic driver and leader in your market and local community. Like Miami, Illinois and Birmingham, I hope you’ll demonstrate relevance and strategic leadership within your market area by becoming an NAR Exhibiting Partner for MIPIM 2016. In March, 2015, the NAR - United States Pavilion included 1,200 square feet of space, with partners from three real estate markets and two NAR commercial affiliate organizations. Exhibiting Partners were the Miami Association of REALTORS® (which promoted luxury residential and commercial developments), Birmingham Association of REALTORS®, the Illinois Association of REALTORS® and CCIM Institute. Additionally, Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) was a sponsoring partner. All participants were critical in making the NAR - United States Pavilion a success. MEDIA COVERAGE:

— A preshow press release featured REALTOR® Associations and U.S. markets.

— Onsite interviews were conducted with NAR leaders and Exhibiting Partners, resulting in multiple articles in the MIPM Show Daily publication (available to all attendees).

— Birmingham Association live-streamed interviews with attendees and members.

IMPACT:

— Reed Midem, the show organizer, hosted a U.S. breakfast publicly recognizing NAR for bringing U.S. real estate markets to an international audience.

— A tour of the MIPM exhibit floor resulted in informal meetings between NAR and Bilateral Partner leaders.

— Exhibiting Partners set up client meetings, establishing new relationships and potential new business.

— A Chicago member made 4 connections for potential business simply because he was registered from the U.S. For him, these contacts justified the entire trip.

— Several attendees inquired about investing in the U.S. and how to get connected to the right professionals.
