UTA RACING

SAE FACULTY ADVISOR’S MESSAGE The University of Texas at Arlington College of Engineering is extremely proud

to present UTA Racing, a team of business and engineering students dedicated

to design, build and compete formula-style racecars against top-tier universities

around the globe. The team will be the first ever American team to compete in

the premier international collegiate design and racing event called Formula Stu-

dent Electric in Germany. They will also be competing in the American Formula

SAE Lincoln competition this summer.

Only the students most passionate for a hands-on education in learning and im-

plementing automotive engineering, manufacturing and project management are

capable of competing at this caliber. These students are exactly that. They have

worked tirelessly for three years to create a fully electric racecar that features 4

custom in-wheel-motors.

This brochure presents UTA Racing and I request that you support them in

their endeavor to compete in the 2016 Formula Student Electric competition.

Dr. Robert L. Woods

Professor of Mechanical Engineering

The high level of competition in FSAE elevates motivation to not merely learn

academic curriculum, but to master it so it may be applied in the best way possi-

ble to ensure success of UTA Racing. Besides engineering experience, UTA Rac-

ing offers real hands-on experience as fabricators, machinists, welders, mechan-

ics, and more. These are all useful skills in a professional environment as engi-

neers must often work with tradesmen of those very skill sets. Understanding

the skill and struggles of those trades will make a better engineer.

UTA Racing provides the tools for professional development otherwise missing

from standard engineering curriculum, such as building relationships with ven-

dors and sponsors that alumni carry with them when they graduate to profes-

sional careers. This offers value to both parties, especially the vendors that his-

torically receive continued business from the graduate at their new job.

MEET THE TEAM UTA Racing is an all-volunteer student organization. Every year we de-

sign and build a formula racecar to compete at Formula SAE competi-

tions against other universities across the globe. Our team has a 30

year legacy, and has won eight championships in the US and three in-

ternationally. This year we have developed and competed a car with a

combustion engine and now we are finalizing the assembly of our

electric racecar. We are incredibly proud to have met the multitude of

stringent safety and engineering requirements of the Formula Student

Electric competition, which make UTA Racing a world class team.

THE CARS

1984 1984 marked the first year that UTA Racing competed in Formula SAE

with a true formula-style car. Previous years saw UTA Racing use modi-

fied Mini Baja cars in the competition, with UTA Racing winning its first

FSAE national championship in 1982.

2015 UTA Racing returned to the Michigan competition after 5 years of partic-

ipating at Lincoln. Competing in a year that saw drastic changes to aero-

dynamic rules, UTA Racing finished 12th in a field of 110 teams.

2012 2012 was UTA Racing's first entry into the Formula Hybrid competition.

The 2010 car was converted into a hybrid by supplementing the turbo-

charged 250cc engine with 3 electric motors. UTA Racing placed first in

endurance, and fourth overall, while also winning the General Motors

Best-Engineered Hybrid award.

4 CUSTOM IN-WHEEL MOTORS The in-wheel motor packaging consists of 4 custom 12-pole BLDC motors with

a combined power of 75 kW, which translate to 100 hp at the wheels.

Each motor has a maximum speed of 15,000 rpm and is stepped

down by a student-designed 13:1 dual stage gearbox, putting 30

Nm of torque to the ground at each rear wheel and 15

Nm of torque to the ground at each front wheel.

The car also features a student-designed highly

advanced torque vectoring algorithm,

which allows the car to vary the

power to each wheel, acting as

an electronic differential.

What is the Formula Student Germany competition?

Students build a single seat formula racecar with which they

can compete against teams from all over the world. The

competition is not won solely by the team with the fastest

car, but rather by the team with the best overall package of

construction, performance, and financial and sales planning.

Formula Student Electric is part of Formula Student Germany, the premier inter-

collegiate formula racing competition in the world. Teams from all over the

world bring their cars to the Hockenheimring motor racing circuit ‒ home of

the 2016 Formula 1 German Grand Prix™ ‒ located in Hockenheim, Germany.

There are several disciplines in the competition, separated into two categories –

static events and dynamic events. Points are awarded for each event and the

team with the greatest total number of points wins the competition.

STATIC EVENTS

Consisting of the Business Presentation, the Cost Report and the Design Re-

port, statics events allow the teams to come face to face with leaders in the mo-

torsport, automotive and supplier industries and defend the engineering, mar-

ketability and manufacturability of the car they have designed and built.

DYNAMIC EVENTS

After passing several tiers of technical inspection to ensure the safety of the

driver and rules compliance of the car, the teams compete in four racing events: Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, and Endurance. Points are awarded based on

finishing time and racing line. Acceleration, speed, handling, dynamics, fuel econ-

omy, reliability ‒ the cars have to prove it all.

During the event,

UTA Racing will

be hosted by the

Kaiserslautern

Racing Team of

the Kaiserslau-

tern University

of Technology.

SPONSORSHIP

UTA Racing would like to thank our current spon-

sors for their generous and gracious support. We

are incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful

sponsors to help us bring our cars to life. We are

especially excited to represent our team, the Uni-

versity, and our sponsors well at the Hocken-

heimring as the first team in the entire western

hemisphere to compete in the prestigious Formula

Student Electric competition. Currently, our re-

sources and sponsorships for designing and building

our electric car do not include funding to compete

internationally, which is why we are in great need of

sponsorship in the form of cash or airline tickets.

We would like to respectfully invite current and

new sponsors to help us meet our budget outlined

below.
