Murray Garvin enters his fifth fullseason as the head men’s basketballcoach at South Carolina State.

This past season marked his 15thyear on the collegiate coaching leveland 18th overall. Garvin served twoseasons as associate head coach for theBulldogs before being promoted tofull-time head coach in 2013.

During the 2015-16 season, Garvinled SC State to its best regular-seasonfinish since 2005 with a 19-15 overallrecord, including a 12-4 MEAC mark.The Bulldogs finished the regular-sea-son tied for second place, advanced tothe MEAC Championship game andearned a postseason tournament bid tothe CIT (Collegeinsider.com Postsea-son Tournament), the first such appear-ance since 2003.

For his efforts, Garvin earned nu-merous Coach of the Year honors,among them MEAC Coach of the Yearand NABC District 15 Coach of theYear. He was also a finalist for the BenJobe National Coach of the Yearaward, given to the top minority coachin the country.

Prior to coming to South CarolinaState, Garvin served as associate headcoach and assistant coach at Winston-Salem State (2008-10). During the2009-10 season, Garvin helped coachthe Rams to the CIAA Southern Divi-sion Championship and an NCAA Di-vision II Tournament appearance.

Garvin also served as an assistantcoach at Charleston Southern (2005-08) and was the athletic director andhead men’s basketball coach at ClintonJunior College in Rock Hill, S.C. from2001-05.

During his time at CJC, his teamshad an overall record of 61-21, and

never finished lower than second in theregular-season conference standings.In 2004, Garvin’s team won the Car-olina’s Junior College Conference Di-vision I Championship and he wasselected as the Carolina’s Junior Col-lege Conference Coach of the Year.

Before entering the college coach-ing arena, Garvin served as an assis-tant coach at Tates Creek High Schoolin Lexington, Ky. for three seasons.In the summer of 2011, Garvin par-ticipated in the NCAA-BlackCoaches and Administrators Achiev-ing Coaching Excellence (ACE) Pro-gram. He was one of 12 men’sbasketball coaches selected nation-wide to participate in a four-dayevent in Indianapolis, Ind. Partici-pants received training and educationin the areas of leadership, communi-cation, campus relations, media,community involvement and programmanagement.

Along his journey in the coachingprofession, Garvin has mentoredmany players that have gone on to re-ceive All-America and conferencerecognition.

Over the past 15 years, Garvin hasserved as a motivational speaker forseveral different organizations andcivic groups. His passion for leader-ship and to inspire and encourage peo-ple to reach for their dreams and thatthe best days of their lives are stillahead of them serves as the purpose ofmost of his speaking engagements.

The Pikeville, KY native earned aBachelor of Science degree in PhysicalEducation from Eastern Kentucky Uni-versity in 1998. He also serves on theBamberg, Calhoun, OrangeburgCounty Board of Trustee’s for The Fel-lowship of Christian Athletes (F.C.A.)and is a member of Epsilon OmegaChapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,Inc.

He and his wife, Latanza, are theproud parents of two daughters --Khalia and Jaila Garvin and are mem-bers of Saint Paul Baptist Church inOrangeburg, SC.
