Rector’s Annual Report – 2017

For the first time in my life, I lost my keys. This occurred last fall on the evening of our Fall Fair. At first, I searched through all my pockets. No keys. Then I searched my car. Nothing. Okay, let’s just slow down and think. I thought I just needed to retrace my steps from when I last used them (to close the parish office door). I did that. No keys! Surely, after a few days, they will show up. I checked at the police station and the post office to see if someone dropped them off there. Nothing. Now, after three months, still no keys. I did, however, receive a “Tile” Christmas gift from Deacon Arleen that I could put on my new key ring so that I wouldn’t lose them again. Aren’t Deacons great! My point in telling this simple story is that if we looked back on 2017 we could all think of things we have lost. Some of them are relatively unimportant – like lost keys, or a hat, or a glove. But there are other things we have “lost” that are very important. Maybe it was a lost opportunity (e.g., new job, a new(er) vehicle, a new home). Maybe we lost an important document or a cherished photo or memento. Even more significantly, maybe some of us lost relationships through divorce or death; maybe some of us have even lost our faith (and we can’t bear even to admit it to others). When I think about what – or who – we have lost in the parish or in my own life, I come back to one of the most important lines I’ve ever read in my life from Frederick Buechner’s novel, Godric. As the elderly “saint” Godric reflects back on his life he discloses one of the truest secrets he knows: “what’s lost is nothing to what’s found, and all the death that ever was, set next to life, would scarcely fill a cup.” As you read through our annual report, I encourage you to notice all the life that is reflected in these stories. Yes, we have lost things and, sadly, we lost people from St. Aidan in 2017. But set next to the life that runs through our congregation, not least of all the resurrection life that is promised in Christ, what we have lost is nothing compared to what’s found. We “found” friends to comfort us in grief and celebrate with us in joy; we “found” an abundance of competent and grace-full leaders to guide and shape our many ministries; we have “found” the resources we needed to release these ministries; have “found” the strength we needed to accomplish much together; and, most of all, we have “found” resurrection life that reminds us that even death is not the last word over those loved ones we have “lost.” On a personal note, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the parish for all of your support, and the provision of extra writing days, as I brought my commentary on the Book of Acts (The Story of God Bible Commentary Series, Zondervan) to a conclusion this past fall. For almost six years I “lost” most of my Fridays to writing. At present, my editors have both read and signed off on the manuscript and it is now in the hands of the publisher. My understanding is that they hope to have it in print by this fall. When I have copies in hand, there will be a party to which you will all be invited! Before then, I want to express my particular thanks to my fellow clergy – Frs. Dustin & Cal and Deacon Arleen – who initiated extra time off in 2017 so that I could focus on writing and, as a result, they carried an extra load themselves. I could not have finished without their help and the generosity of the parish. Now, it is a joy to have “found” my Fridays again to be used for rest and refreshment (and, in the summer, maybe a little more gardening and golfing!). In conclusion, might I make a suggestion? As you read the following reports, when you find the marks of life and love, take time to pause and praise God. Praise him for all the grace and goodness we found in 2017 and, on occasion, even for some of the things we lost. Respectfully submitted, Fr. Dean January 2018

Deacon’s Annual Report 2017 Usually in this report, I focus on diaconal ministry in our parish which shows up in every corner of our parish, as you, the parishioners reach out to share the love of Christ in so many ways. In July, however, I was blessed to attend the conference of the Association of Anglican Deacons in Canada (AADC) in Victoria, BC. I deeply appreciate the oppor-tunity it gave me to not only be refreshed but to have my mind and soul stretched, my eyes and ears opened, my heart challenged, supported and warmed and my hope and faith strengthened. My report this year therefore will focus on the conference given that our parish graciously sponsored me in attending.

The most obvious of any such gathering is the benefit of networking with colleagues. Roughly 70 deacons and many spouses from all parts of Canada and some areas of the United States attended. The conference focused on two main themes: 1.social justice with an eye on the plight of marginalized peoples in communities and their struggles with poverty, homeless-ness, addiction, mental health, and food security; 2. reconciliation which included some overlap with the first and brought the experience and concerns of First Nations people to the fore. Elizabeth May, MP, leader of the Green Party of Canada and an active Anglican, opened the conference exploring with us the meaning of brokenness, challenging the church to consider the tension between the cracks and brokenness of the human condi-tion and God’s perfect creation, and how we might reconcile the two. She described the liminal place we, as deacons, often find ourselves in our ministry, as a place where hope breaks through seemingly impenetrable darkness. This description deeply touched many of our hearts and acted as a reminder and an encouragement as some-times it is not only hard to see but harder to remember to look for the light in the midst of the darkness. We heard from people who have lived on the streets and are now working with those still there. They spoke with courage and candour of the judgement and stigma they ex-perienced and they “shared their innate wisdom that only a life of experience could bring”. We heard from representatives of local agencies who joined them in challenging us to move out of our own comfort zones to look at the attitudes and beliefs that allow for systemic poverty and the lack of basic services for the growing number of people who live below the poverty line.

One recurring theme from both sets of presenters was the importance of acknowledg-ing the role trauma plays in shaping our society including the trauma imposed by the welfare system, the trauma of stigma and racism and intergenerational trauma within families. Ryan Weston, (Public Witness for Social and Ecological Justice, Anglican Church of Canada) reflected that what was evident was that while the church has been complicit in maintaining these social systems through the charity model of action, there is a growing awareness of the importance of social justice action. Deacons are called to bridge the chasm between charity and justice. We are called to help heal with dignity.

We were welcomed by the Songhees to their Wellness Centre, setting the tone for the exploration of the theme of reconciliation with First Nations. Bishop Logan McMena-mie of the Diocese of British Columbia, shared a reflection on reconciliation and his documentary, “One Step” which tells the story of the 480km walk he took in 2016 from Alert Bay to Victoria in an effort to open the door towards reconciliation between the church and First Nations Peoples. Dallas Smith of the Nanwakolas Council, spoke on the need to accept apologies and for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to move forward together. Melanie Delva (reconciliation animator for the Anglican Church of Canada), spoke of her own journey and recovery from ideas of white privilege. We were moved, and challenged to re-think assumptions and unconscious biases. My husband,Bob, attended the portions of the conference open to spouses and found it helpful to converse with other deacons’ spouses as they compared notes and af-firmed that the demands and sometimes craziness that goes on in our households as the result of “our” diaconal ministries is universal. Throughout the conference, we were reminded we were called to be a “disturbance of Deacons”. It was acknowledged that we often see things through different lenses than those around us and that can be a challenge and can make us question ourselves at times when we are met with rolling eyes and contempt but it is in that that we interpret the needs of the world to the church and the work of the church to the world. We were encouraged to speak up, to use our voices as deacons to stand up and change policy: to make people more important than buildings, to hold leadership and governing bod-ies accountable in protecting the most vulnerable. I, your local disturbance, will continue to disturb where I feel called to do so, now knowing personally many more sheep in God’s flock whom he is using collectively to further the work in his kingdom. We may be the disturbers as Deacons but the work is that of all God’s people. I thank each of you for your ministry and your love, prayers, care and generosity to me as we disturb and serve together in God’s kingdom. Serving with you, Arleen+

sponsibilities related to the care and maintenance of the church building. • Led the process for development of a new job description and the subsequent interviews

and selection of parish administrator. • Initiated and participated with G. Currie and L. Shepherd toward the development of a fa-

cility rental and use policy for the church building. • Initiated the development of a policy regarding special gifts offered to the parish. Respectfully submitted, Ellen Redshaw, David Warnock.

A People’s Warden Perspective As stated in the Warden's Report, there are many things that David Warnock and I have been involved in but I think there are also different perspectives that we each have. David, as Rector's Warden is to take care of our incumbent. David "sees" things that I don't see. I think as People's Warden my role is to be "for the people". I think that the ministries I am involved in help me to see things and know things of St. Aidan that have helped me as People's Warden and to be able to share them with you in this report. Please know that not all Wardens have the same gifts, each Warden in the past and in the future has his or her own gifts to of-fer to this parish. My involvement in music allows me to be with a group of dedicated people each Wednesday evening, listening to each other’s stories and sharing joys and sorrows of each other's lives. We always have time to listen to someone, practicing the music can wait for a few minutes. I am also gratefully for musicians who come to the rescue and agree to play at the last minute or when I think no one is available. There are many other times of fellowship in small groups that each of us can think of, with people we know or meeting church members that we don't really get to know on a Sunday morning. My involvement in children's ministry has allowed me to get to know the children and see a children's program (Godly Play) that is connected to our liturgical year grow and thrive for more than 10 years. I recently watched as Molly was running around at the back of the church. It seems like yesterday I re-member her crawling around on the floor, not able to walk yet. Time goes by so quickly, and soon we see the children involved in ministries such as serving and reading. My role as the bookkeeper of St. Aidan probably has, I think, given me the best way to "see" our par-ish. And it's not just about “the numbers”; it's more than paying bills, doing journal entries, and prepar-ing bank reconciliations. I see the bills to keep our church functioning with heat, water, and electricity; I see what we are doing for ministries, expenses for our Sunday worship, outreach and ministries in our community, for our Diocese of Qu'Appelle, and in the world. I am very aware as the bookkeeper and also as People's Warden what it takes to make things happen and to do God's work. The other side of my role as bookkeeper is to see the “giving side” of what allows our parish to do and be what it is as St. Aidan in Moose Jaw. I see the total amounts each week. I am always thankful for the giving life of this parish to support ministry needs and expenses. I am thrilled to see people respond when the need arises to meet our financial obligations within our parish and in our diocese. I know that the money given each week is from a parish that is loving, giving, and supportive. As People's Warden, I see a parish that is supportive of each other and supportive of our incumbent. I see a parish of people who work hard and give of their time; case in point is the work that was done to complete the parish hall, and more hard work and dedication will be needed to renovate the basement and provide a suitable space for the children and youth, and others who use the basement. So, I encourage us to encourage one another and to trust in the Lord.

“May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one anoth-er, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:5-6, NRSV)

Ellen Redshaw People’s Warden

Annual Report of the Vestry for 2017 St. Aidan Anglican Church

Serving as a member of vestry is not simply a matter of sitting on the ‘board’ of an organization. It is something of that, and the things that entails, but it is more in that one hears and sees a bit of what goes on, in so many ways, sometimes quite unnoticed. For example, if you look through this annual report, do read what has been happening throughout the weeks of the year here and outside these doors: such as the care being shown to shut-in folks, cards and flowers being given, visits being made to those who are sick or bereaved, children and youth learning and practicing what they learn, worshippers being warmly welcomed every week, musicians helping us join in worship, preachers sharing their understanding of God’s Word for us, people praying , preparing for the sharing of the eucharist, delivering meals to shut-ins, making clothes to be given to children in need, and some serving lunch each week after Sunday services of worship. There are also those who remember us all in their prayers day by day. A few of the out-of-the-ordinary activities that vestry was directly involved in this past year include:

Early in the year, the kitchen was completed with the installation of cupboards, final plumbing and getting the dishwasher operational.

Leadership Day was held Saturday March 25 where many congregants who are active in various ministries in the church met for fellowship and sharing regarding their ministry. A summary of ‘guiding principles for decision-making together’ arose from this event. These will be used to influence decision making in the future and priority items for consideration were identified.

Some assistance was provided to three parishioners to participate in a spiritual direction course offered by the Qu’Appelle School.

A gift acceptance policy based on materials provided by the Anglican Church of Canada was studied and adopted for use.

We were privileged to have a Qu’Appelle School event held in Moose Jaw , led by Dr. John Barclay who also joined us for our services and an ‘Inklings’ evening.

Thank-you to all who contribute to the life of the parish in your own way. (See Hebrews 6:10) Respectfully submitted, Ellen Redshaw, David Warnock

Verger and Property Report

1. We have completed the kitchen construction in our new parish hall. The dishwasher is

operational and used frequently, the closure is installed over the kitchen counter and the old window on the south wall has been replaced. We have a stained glass window that will be framed and hung on the east wall of the hall in the near future. Due to hail damage in July 2016, the rooftop furnace had to be replaced. That has been done. In the church, all the lights now have LED bulbs. This will change our power costs by approximately $10-$15 per week. There are no other major issues with the rest of our church property. What a joy it has been and sometimes a challenge, but what a privilege to have been the general contractor for the transformation of the gym into the new parish hall!

2. As we start into 2018, Michelle will gradually be taking over my position as property

chairman. I am looking forward to working with Michelle in this transition. I would like to say thank you to all the people who have helped whenever I’ve asked them. This list is too long to begin naming everyone. As I leave this position, I would like to say that over the many years that I served our Church I feel it has been a privilege to look after our Church home.

Respectfully submitted,

John Langford

Meals on Wheels 2017

Outreach……..a way to reach out to others . We, at St. Aidan, do this in a variety of ways. Meals on Wheels is one example. Twice a year we assist our Health Region by delivering meals to various people in Moose Jaw. The nutritionally, well-balanced meals are prepared and placed in insulated lunch bags at Pioneer Lodge. Each lunch bag has a name and address on it. A team, consisting of a driver and deliverer, pick the meals up at 11:30 and deliver them to the address shown on the label. The city is divided into 2 routes with 8 to 10 meals per route. When all the meals are delivered, the empty lunch bags are returned to Pioneer Lodge. The dates for this year are April 9 to 14/ 2018 and Sept 24 to 29/ 2018. Watch for the sign-up sheet approximately 3 weeks prior to these dates. Thank you to those who faithfully volunteer to drive and deliver the meals. If you have any questions, speak to Sharleen Langford (306 692 6218) Respectfully submitted, Sharleen Langford

Welcoming Team Annual Report 2017

This is the team of people you meet when you first come to our church. They meet you on the street, open the door and invite you inside. They welcome you and offer hospitality and friendship as we, at St. Aidan, want you to feel comfortable and at home in God’s house. As a parish we strive to create an environment of warmth and welcome where people can come and meet God in our space, our liturgy and in each other. The ministry of the Welcoming Team is important as studies show, most often your first five minutes in a place influences the remainder of your stay and whether or not you return.

Currently there are 20 adults and youth serving in this ministry. I want to acknowledge and commend the people of this team for their commitment and ability to carry out this ministry of hospitality. A deacon stands on the threshold of the church inviting and welcoming the world to God’s church and sending the people of the church out into the world to love and serve the Lord. These people in our parish stand there as diaconal people welcoming you as you come, serving you while you are here and sending you forth when it is time to go.

I give thanks for each and every member serving on this team. It is an honor to serve God and his people with you. I pray for God’s blessing on each of you in your ministry at St. Aidan as you extend the welcome of Christ and seek him in those you meet knowing that you are welcoming Christ himself in each person you greet. If at any time, you feel called to serve as part of this team, or would like to at least explore it, please feel free to speak with me, Deacon

Arleen, or any member of the Welcoming Team. As we welcome people to our church, we also welcome new members to our team. Serving with you, Arleen Champion Welcoming Team Ministry Leader

Pastoral Care Annual Report 2017

This past year visits have taken place regularly at Pioneer Lodge, Capilano Court, Chez Nous, Extendicare and Providence Place. The visitors at Extendicare have been using a service booklet called “Seasons of Life” and have tailored the service to each person’s need. Communion is given on a regular basis to the people in each of these facilities. As well, home communion been provided when needed. As has been done since since St. Aidan parish’s beginning we take flowers in the week before Christmas to those St. Aidan folks in care homes, in the hospital, and to those who have had a close family member die in the past year. To go along with the flowers the Godly Play children construct Christmas cards and the Stitch and Chatter group decorate vases. This year the group who were taking flowers to Providence Place decided to “make a day of it”. They began in the morning with Deacon Arleen conducting an ecumenical Eucharist. Those visitors who were able to stayed and enjoyed lunch in the Providence Place cafeteria and then all gathered in the parish hall, this year joined by Randy Johner, to prepare for flower delivery. John Langford and Dave Wollbaum, who were working on the new kitchen window, were recruited to help trim the flower stems. Easter cards were taken to those in care homes. Sherril Land sends or takes sympathy cards to parishioners who have experienced a family death. We hospital visit each week on a three week rotation. For reasons to do with changes in the Hospital Administration system and in the Spiritual Care Department as well as confidentiality issues it is more of a challenge to determine when there is someone from St. Aidan parish, or an Anglican from the surrounding area, in the hospital. There is no longer a list available of those who have identified themselves as a particular denomination. Please tell Gwen Currie 693-3470, Lorraine Cushway 693-9725, Fr. Dean or Deacon Arleen if you know of a parishioner who is in the hospital. Chris Hoyes crafts beautiful wooden Holding/Comfort crosses to be given out by the pastoral care group where there is deemed to be a need. They truly are a comfort to those who receive them. This ministry has been carrying on for about five years and augments the pastoral care ministry. Father Dean and Deacon Arleen. along with Lorraine Cushway and I met this fall to support one another and to discuss ways in which we can better serve our faith community. We are grateful for Fr Dean’s and Deacon Arleen’s leadership and encouragement. Communications Report 2017 Advertising In 2017 we placed a Christmas worship service ad with CHAB: Celebrate the Coming of Jesus Christ with St. Aidan Anglican Church, Christmas Eve Family Service at 7 pm and a Mass at 11 pm. Located on the corner of High Street and First Avenue Northeast, where the Christmas bells will be ringing. Visit mjanglican.org. The Christmas ad aired 30 times on 800 CHAB, Country 100 and on Mix 103 at a total cost of $150. The communications group places the pamphlets and the offertory envelopes found in the pews. The information posted in the sign boards outside the building on High St. and 1st Avenue is also our responsibility. Deacon Arleen Champion Jeremy Ratzlaff Gwen Currie Carla Hoffmann Vivian Barber Report submitted by Gwen Currie. Website In 2017, 3,654 individual users visited St. Aidan’s website for a total of 18,949 pageviews. Mobile web traffic from phones and tablets has increased from 34% in 2016 to 42% in 2017. The most significant development for the website in 2017 was that it was completely rebuilt to be fully mobile-friendly. All of the website’s contents conform to the size of any screen, making the website hospitable to newcomers’ enquiries. Because people visit a church website long before deciding to come through the door, it is important that we are able to meet people well online. In August of 2017, an education-focused area was added to the website where we are able to distribute Sunday school lesson plans, schedules, and materials for our Godly Play and Sunday School teachers, and where people are able to register online for youth retreats. This new area of the website is accessible at https://abbey.staidan.ca. Also in the fall of 2017, Jeremy Ratzlaff and Fr. Dean produced an excellent video welcoming newcomers to St. Aidan. You can find the video on the homepage of St. Aidan’s website, https://staidan.ca. (In just a few weeks, the video generated over 2,500 views!) Our 2017 volunteer web team included Luke Johnson and Jeremy Ratzlaff. Website Statement submitted by Luke Johnson.

PRAYER CHAIN 2017 The St. Aidan prayer chain is added prayer support for those who are facing personal family issues themselves or their friends. In order for the prayer request to be activated the request is made known to prayer chain leaders (Linda Aird 306-692-7221 and Gwen Currie 306-693-3470), Fr. Dean, Deacon Arleen, or the church office. The names can also be placed in the bulletin for the prayers of the people every Sunday if so desired. Permission of the person for whom the prayers are requested should be obtained whenever possible. The request remains with the prayer chain intercessor for a period of two weeks. We encourage the person who is asking for prayer to inform the prayer chain of answers to the prayer request. If there is no feedback the prayer chain can be stopped after the two week period or extended by those on the prayer chain who feel the need to continue with the prayer request. All prayer requests are confidential unless told otherwise. The Parish Prayer Cycle booklet is available to use in your own personal prayer time and is on the back table facing west. Please sign for your prayer booklet on the sheet provided. When thirty one parishioners take part in this ministry everyone in the parish will be prayed for daily. Thanksgiving to the “PRAYER ANGELS” who intercede on behalf of those who want extra continuous prayer for themselves or others. If God is calling you to this ministry of intercessory prayer, please join us.

Respectfully submitted, Linda Aird

Prayer Ministry Report. February, 2018 Every Sunday during the Eucharist (at the 10:30 service only) two people from the Prayer Ministry Team are available in the small prayer room at the front of the church (on the right hand side, as one faces the altar). We are available to listen and then anoint with oil and pray for anyone who comes, desiring healing for themselves or a loved one in any area of their lives. We acknowledge the presence of the Lord with us as we pray together, knowing that he is present though we cannot see him, asking Him, in faith, to heal and restore. On average we have between 1 and 3 people come for prayer each Sunday, some-times more and occasionally none. If no one comes forward for prayer, we use the time to pray for those in the congregation who need prayer for healing, assured that God sees who they are and what they need, and for needs that we know of. We have had people come back to us, in the past year, to express their gratitude for the way God has answered prayer for healing. This is deeply encouraging. We hope that more people will have courage to come for prayer during the Eucha-rist service, each Sunday. We have witnessed that, as we meet in the presence of our loving Lord who knows each one intimately, together as brothers and sisters in Christ, hope and trust grow and healing happens. Members of the prayer team can be approached after the service for prayer as well, if a person desires prayer but was unable to come during the Eucharist, for what-ever reason. The prayer ministry team is comprised of Linda Aird, Elaine Deans, Sandra Messner, Ian O’Brien, Darlene Pinter, Timothy Rains, Catherine Reichel, Doug Reichel. Respectfully submitted by Catherine Reichel.

Library Report—2017

The St Aidan Library is doing well. I am new to the position of librarian and very excited to help in this ministry. To date, very little has changed from how our previous and long-standing librarian, Catherine Osachoff, ran the library. It is well-organized and easy to use. I've cataloged several donations and shelved returned books. It has been a treasure trove for me to explore, as I learn about Anglican services and traditions. There are hundreds of helpful and wonderful books in our collection. Please come and visit it! I would love to hear your suggestions for titles that would be appropriate in our library, even if they are poetry. Thank you!

Anglican Roman Catholic Covenant Report Parish Representative - Ev Falk

I attended a number of events this year in my role as St Aidan Representative of the Anglican-Roman Catholic Covenant (ARCC). I attended two Ecumenical services, one in Regina and one in Moose Jaw. I also attended two all day workshops, one at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church (Moose Jaw) in April and at St Paul’s Cathedral (Regina) in November. The event at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church was very interesting with Archbishop Donald Bolan walking the participants (who were almost entirely Roman Catholic), through Ecumenism. Archbishop Bolan has been one of the main instrumental people in this process including at the Vatican level. I enjoyed this day and had a greater understanding of the what, how and why of my Catholic brothers and sisters. I was sitting at a table with 3 women from Gull Lake, SK and they were excited to have me at their table all because of the ecumenism that they had already experienced in their community, by having joint women’s events and bible studies. In November at the Workshop for Parish Ecumenical Representatives, Archbishop Donald Bolen offered greetings and encouragement in the work of Ecumenism. The day was full of so much new information (for me) about the history and work of Ecumenism by the Anglicans and Roman Catholics. Case studies and examples were given and discussions were rich. So what are the Ecumenical plans going ahead for St. Aidan? Regular prayer for our partner church of St Joseph Roman Catholic Church. Parish exchanges at services. Joint prayer service during the Week of Prayer. Communication with Grant Rothwell, the St Joseph’s Ecumenical Representative. Prayer for the Anglican-Roman Catholic Covenant and the Implementation

Committee. Please talk to me if you have any other ideas. Submitted by Ev Falk

Music Ministry Report – 2017 “O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” (Psalm 95:1 NRSV) Many people were involved in the music in 2017. Thank-you to the accompanists at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service: Organist – Sandra Warnock until June when she retired Angela Deans played organ a few times. Pianists – Rhoda Cairns, Diane Rhodes, Cora Melanson, Gayle Jones, Lowana Porter and worship team. Diane Rhodes once again led the anthem choir. The choir leads us on most Sundays of the year. We also have singers who lead in the contemporary worship songs on some Sundays. Choir practice is Wednesday at 7:00 pm from Sept. to early June. Ellen Redshaw Music Ministry

Budget Process Note

Please be advised that Bishop Rob Hardwick instructed us that the Canons for the Diocese of Qu’Appelle make the approval of an annual budget the responsibility of the Vestry rather than the congregation at the Annual General Meeting. The Vestry of St. Aidan approved a budget in December, 2017, and we are departing from our practice of presenting a budget for approval at the AGM. Instead, the task of the Annual Meeting is to receive and review the financial statements of the preceding year and the budget for the current year. If a serious concern is identified, a motion could be presented that the Vestry revise the budget to meet particular criteria.
