Timing and Numbers Thisisatimedevent.Individualswillbegiventhreebibnumbers,oneframenumber(roadbike),andonestickonnumber(forboat).Bibnumbersaretobewornonthecompetitor’sfrontduringthepaddleandrunlegsandonyourbackrightsideonthebike.Framenumberistobeattachedtoyourroadbikeandstickeronthebowofyourboat.Teamswillreceivethreebibnumberstobewornbyeachmemberoftheteamwiththesameplacementonthebodyasindividualslistedabove.Teamswillbegivenawristbandtohandoff.Whentheyarereadyfortheirhandoffoftheirrelaywristbandwiththeirteammatetheywillstageinthedesignatedteamsareaofthetransitionzone.Youmustpasswristbandtoyourteammateinthetransitionzoneonly!KayaknumberswillbeissuedatthetimeofdropoffandyouMUSThaveamatchingbibnumbertothenumberonyourkayakinordertopickitupfromthetransitionzoneaftertherace.Friendsandfamilysupportingindividualcompetitorswillbegivennumbercardsatpacketpickup(2)withtheirathletesbibnumberandnameonit.Theyaretousethosecardsininordertocheckequipmentinandoutofthetransitionzones.Timingwillbedoneusingachiptimingsystem.Wewillbedoingsplitsforeachofthelegsandanoveralltimefortheevent.Individualsmusthavetheirtimingchipwiththemthroughthedurationoftherace.TeamsitisCRITICALeachmemberweartheirtimingchip.Pleasestandclearofthetimingchuteuntilyouhavebeentaggedandproceedthroughit.

Aid Stations AidstationscontainingwaterandGatoradewillbelocatedatthepaddletobiketransition,biketoruntransition,and2oncourseduringthebikeandfouroncoursefortherun.

Transition Zones

Transitionzonesareonlyforathletesduringtherace.Teammembersgettingreadytotakethehandoffinthetransitionzonemustwaitinthedesignatedstagingarea.DoNOTentertheincomingoroutgoinggatestothetransitionunlessyouareactivelycompeting.Toenterthetransitionsoyoucanwaitforateammateorifhavejustcompletedyourlegpleaseusethetransitionentrygateforaccessinandout.Supportstaffmayentertopick-upequipmentonly.Youmusthaveanequipmentcardinordertoaccessthetransitiontopick-upequipmentforyoursupportedathleteandmustalsoyouthetransitionentryforaccess.

Paddling - Leg #1

TheracewillstartatthePeterCourtneyMintoIslandpedestrianbridgeatSalem’sRiverfrontpark.ThereisaonemilerunningportionfromthestartatthebridgetotheboatputinatWallaceMarinePark.Teamshavetheoptionofhavinganothermemberoftheirteamrunthisportionandhandofftheirwristbandtotheirpaddlerattheboatputinorthepaddlercanrunitthemselves.Allteams,andindividualsmustchecktheirboatsintothetransitionzonepriorto9AM.Boatsmustremaininthetransitionareauntiltheyareusedfortheevent.AllpaddlersmustuseanapprovedPFDanditmustbewornatalltimesonthewater.InadditiontheymusthaveawhistleonboardaswellasmeetOregonStateMarineBoardguidelines.PaddlerswillreceiveassistancegettingtheirboatsoutofthewateratthetakeoutatSpongsLanding.ThepaddlingcoursewilldepartfromWallaceMarinaBeachandheaddueNorth(downriver).Thepaddlingsectionisa6.2milesfromputintotakeout.Itisadowncurrentpaddlewithanaverageflowof4mph.AT3.75milesisKeizerRapidsParkshouldyouneedtousearestroomorgoashoreforsomething.Ithasaboatrampatthislocation.Wewillhaveonwatersafetystaffmonitoringyouasyouprogress.Thisisaflatwaterpaddlewithafewripplesections(notrapidsbutripples).Staffwilltaketheboatsfromthepaddlerswhentheyhittheshoreandstorethemforcollectionlater.Paddlersmustrunfromthebeachuptheembankmentandstairstothetransitionareaandteamswilltagtheirbikelegteammateandindividualswillmakethetransition.Paddlersmusthaveabibnumberwornsoitisvisiblewhileinonyourboatandatthetransition.Paddlersmusthaveabibnumberthatmatchesthenumberontheirkayakinordertopickitup.Numbersforthekayakwillbeissuedatcheckin.Allboatsmustbepickedupby3:00PM.Anyboatsnotpickedupby2:00PM.Individualswhodonothaveteamsupporttopickuptheirboatspleasecontacttheraceorganizationatbreakawayeventinfo@gmail.comtomakearrangements.Anyfloatworthycraftcanbeusedaslongasithasnooarlocksandyoumustuseasingleordoublebladedpaddle.

Road Bike - Leg #2

TheRoadBikeLegwilldepartfromSpongsLandingCountyParkparkinglottransitionarea.Forthebikelegridersmustfollowrulesoftheroad.InaccordancetoMarionCounty’srequirementsallparticipantsMUSTadheretorulesoftheroadatalltimeswhileonthebikelegportion.CoursemarshalsarenotallowedonMarionCountyroadsduetoMarionCountyRoadDepartmentspoliciessopleasebeheadsupandfollowdirectionalsignsthroughoutthecourseaswellaskeepacopyoftheturnbyturndirectionswithyou.TheonlyexceptionisthecrossingofStateHighway99Ewewillhaveflaggerstoallowriderstocrossthisbusyhighway.Ridersarenotallowedtodraftduringthisleganditmustbeasoloeffort.Ridersmuststayontherightsideshoulderduringtheleg.Ridersovertakingslowerridersmustpasswithin30secondsorkeepaminimumof5bikelengthdistancebehind.Theroadbikecourseisopentotrafficsoallcompetitorsmustbeheadsupandawareandfollowrulesoftheroad.Noaidmaybegivenalongthewayandmechanicalissuesandflattiresmustberepairedbytherider.Nooutsideassistancewillbeallowed.Wewillhavetwoaidstationslocatedatmile18.2and37.6alongthecoursewithGatorade,Water,andGU.AtthecompletionofthebikelegridersmustdismounttheirbikesafterturningintoParkingLotAatSilverFallsStateParktransitionarea.Roadcyclistmustwearabibnumberontheirbackrightsideaswellashaveaframenumberontheirbike.Competitorswillberequiredtoshowabibnumberthatcoordinateswiththeframenumberinordertopickuptheirbikefromthetransitionarea.

Running - Leg #3

TheRunlegwillstartatSilverFallsStateParkParkingLotAandheadeastontherimtrail.Theroadisopentotrafficandyouwillberequiredtowatchforvehicles.Beawarethatotherparkuserswillbeonthetrailsaswell.Pleasebecourteousandletthemknowinadvancewhenyouapproachandintendtopass.Theentireruncourseisontrailssobeawareofroots,rocks,andifwetslipperyconditions.Trailrunningshoesareadvised.TherewillbeanaidstationatthemidpointoftherunthathaswaterandGatorade.

Safety Requirements DuringtheBikeLegsanANSI,ATSM,orSNELLapprovedhelmetmustbewornatalltimeswhileonthebike.Bikesarerequiredtobeinfullworkingorderwithbrakes,shifting,andtirepressureacceptable.DuringtheKayakLegyoumustwearanapprovedPFDatalltimeswhileonthewateraswellasawhistleandtheboatmustbelicensedinaccordancetoOregonMarineBoardRegulations.
