WearethrilledtodeliverahugerangeofeducationprogramstoteachersandstudentsacrossSydney,NSWandbeyond.Yearonyear,ourprogramscontinuetoprovideanincreasingrangeofbetterqualityopportunitiesforpeopleofallagestoengagewiththeatreandcreativelearning.Webelieveeveryyoungpersonshouldhaveaccesstoqualityartsexperiences.That’swhyin2018we’vegotover7,000theatreseatsreservedforstudents,aswellasdigitalresources,pre-andpost-showdiscussionswithSTCcreativestoilluminatethecreativeprocessandcurriculumlinks.SmallgroupsofhighschoolstudentswillalsojoinSTCthroughWorkExperienceWeekandourYoungWharfiesprogram.Webelievecreativityandarthasaplaceatthecentreofdailylife.That’swhywe’llonceagainbeworkingwithhundredsofteachersacrossAustraliatosupportthemtousedramatounlockstudents’literacy,empathyandmotivation.Thisphilosophyhasalsodrivenourprogramexpansionintojuvenilejusticecentresandcommunityorganisations.Onanygivendayoftheweek,STCEducationstaffandTeachingArtistsareoutandaboutdeliveringprograms.Theymaybementoringagroupofprimaryteachers,leadingagroupofrefugeesastheygainconfidenceinspeakingEnglishthroughDrama,orpreparinghighschoolstudentstoencountertheatreforthefirsttime.

WHAT IS SCHOOL DRAMA?SchoolDramaisateacherprofessionallearningprogramwithadifference–webringthelearningtoyou,pairingeachteacherwithaTeachingArtisttoembarkonauniqueco-mentoringpartnership.

SchoolDramahasadualfocus.Theprimaryfocusisontheindividualteacher’sprofessionallearning.Withthisinmind,aTeachingArtistwillmodelhowtouseprocessdrama-basedstrategieswithqualitychildren’sliteraturetoimproveteachingandlearning.Thesecondaryfocusisonimprovingstudentliteracyandengagement.Together,theteacher,studentsandtheTeachingArtistexploretexts,makemeaningandgainconfidenceinliteracyskills.

Theprogramisdesignedwithsustainabilityinmind,instillingconfidenceinprimaryschoolteacherstoputtheirlearningsintoactionstraightaway,intheirownclassrooms.

PatrickWhite,theonlyAustraliantowintheNobelPrizeforLiterature,isatoweringfigureinourculture.Ofhisplays,A Cheery Soul wasWhite’sownfavourite.It’safascinatingwork,mixingasatiricalviewofAustraliansocietywithanexpressionisticform,poeticlanguageandcharactersthatareashilariousandgrotesqueastheyareuncannilyfamiliar.

Returningtohisimaginedevery-suburbofSarsaparilla,Whiteintroducesustooneofhismostmemorablecharacters,MissDocker,whoembodieswhatthewritertermed“thedestructivepowerofgood.”TheprototypicalAussiebusy-body,MissDocker’sstoryleadsherinaseriesofincreasinglysurrealactsfromthehomeoftheCustances,tothelocalnursinghome,thechurchand,finally,totheisolatedgroundsofthecrematorium.White’sacidicinsightsintothenation’ssoulareasfunnyandtellingnowastheywereupontheplay’sdebutin1963.

A Cheery SoulhasastoriedpastatSTC,withacclaimedproductionsin1979(directedbyJimSharman)and2001(directedbyNeilArmfield),bothstarringRobynNevininaroleshemadefamous.In2018,ourArtisticDirectorKipWilliamstakesthehelm,placingthemagnificentSarahPeirse(Switzerland)intoMissDocker’sfiercelysensibleshoesinaboldnewproductionforthe21stcentury.

WHARF RENEWAL PROJECT

MAKING A GREAT BUILDING BETTERSinceTheWharfopenedin1984,visitingSydneyTheatreCompanyhasbeenauniqueSydneyexperience.Overthattime,STChasgrown,timeshavechanged,andTheWharfisbearingdecadesofwearandtear.

In2018,wewillembarkonourWharfRenewalProjecttomakemuch-neededimprovementstotheaudiencefacilitiesandtheatre-makingspaces.ThiswillbethefirstmajorupgradeofTheWharfin33years.

TheWharfRenewalProjectwillmakethisincrediblebuildingbetter.MuchthoughtandcarehasgoneintotheplanningtoensurethatourbelovedWharfretainsitscharacter,charmandessential“wharfiness.”

Atitsheart,theProjectwilllookforwaystofurtherenhancethebeautifulheritagefeatures,whileprovidingbetteraccessibility,morecomfortableandefficientworkspacesforourartists,craftspeopleandstaff,modernisedtheatresandamorecomfortabletheatreexperienceforyou,ouraudience.
