Letter from the Reverend …
We have recently reflected upon and celebrated the most wonderful season of Easter! Easter isn’t over though… Easter is never over. Pope John Paul II said, “Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.” We are people who live in the light of the resurrection. Christians have the same power living in them that rose Jesus from the dead. Unfortunately, many don’t realise this. There was certainly a time I didn’t realise. For many years as a Christian I knew of the hope of Heaven, but I hadn’t realised that eternal life began the day I asked Jesus to be Lord of my life. I hadn’t realised that following Him meant that I really did have the power to overcome; to know peace even in suffering. The realisation of Christ in you, and hope of glory, is good news. Our challenge is to live as Easter people, sharing the joy of the resurrection… to represent Christ in this broken world. To let our light shine before people that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16) Whether we are in the garage filling up our petrol tanks, filling our trolleys in Sainsbury’s (other stores are available) or walking down the high-street, if you know Christ, then make Him known! Whether that is with a smile, a kind word or helping someone out how hasn’t got enough money to pay for their shopping, let’s carry on Easter celebrations throughout 2019 and beyond because Christ is Risen and that’s worth raising a hallelujah! Maybe you’re reading this, and you haven’t made Christ the Lord of your life, or maybe you thought you had but you’re not sure anymore. We would love to talk with you, so please pop a note into the office saying ‘want to know more’ along with your details, and someone will get back to you. Blessings, Rev’d Tracy M

Note from the Editors
Hello everyone, and welcome to the May edition of
the Parish Magazine, following on from our wonderful Easter celebrations. We
have wonderful news in each area of ministry in this edition; on page 15 you
can read all about the Spring Harvest, while on page 20 you can read all about
the fantastic donations to the Leprosy Mission.
We have lots of events going on this month, so plenty for everyone to get
involved in! Our Children’s Ministry team will be hosting an art day (page 14),
and the Friends of Holy Trinity are holding a Trinity Fair next month (page 8).
Meanwhile, CAMEO have an exciting schedule of things going on in May (page
11), and there will be a Choral Evensong by the Parish Choir (page 22). Please
do also have a go at this month’s word wheel, kindly supplied by Clive Lewis
(page 24). We haven’t had any completed entries for our puzzles yet, so you
could be the first! Please send your entries to the Parish Magazine via the
Parish Office and we will announce you as a winner in the next edition.
If you would like to send anything to the Parish Magazine for us to include, we’d
love to hear from you. We’re still looking for book and film reviews, but also
images we can use to put on the front cover of our magazine. We’re also very
open to new ideas; if you would like to write an article for us on anything going
on in Holy Trinity or St Michael’s, please do get in touch.
The deadline for the magazine is on the second Sunday of every month; if
you would like to send in an article, review or photograph please email

Our AGM on 24th of March welcomed about 50 members, so thank you to all
who attended. Jane Brown chaired the meeting and gave her thanks to all of
those who have worked so hard and given up their time to raise money. She
thanked all members and stated that "without everyone's membership and
support of our events there would be no Friends of Holy Trinity".
Membership is currently down, due to some members passing or moving, so
please consider joining if you are not a member. Being a member costs only
£12 per person, and £18 for married couples, and offers you reduced rates to
our events.
£19,000 was presented to the PCC, and Churchwarden Jacky Wragg received
it on their behalf. Ian Gale read a short letter from our President, Mark Francois
MP, who was at another engagement.
Karen Phillips will be retiring from her role as Membership Secretary in May;
she was presented with a floral basket and thanks were given. Liz Simmonds
will be taking up the post for the second time. The existing committee was re-
elected, but nobody present was willing to fill the one vacancy. Perhaps you
would consider joining the committee?
This year the Thanksgiving Shield was awarded to Noel Beer for all his hard
work in researching our town's history and recording it in a series of booklets
that have been sold on behalf of The Friends over many years. Sadly, Noel was
unable to receive the shield at the AGM but has since been presented with it,
and was delighted and honoured.
We were pleased to welcome Vivien Martin-Irvine from Rayleigh Town
Museum, who gave an enlightening talk on the research carried out to identify
the additional names on our War Memorial Plaque. Should anyone wish to know
more please visit the Museum.

Adopt a Kneeler Project
The kneelers at Holy Trinity are now mostly redundant.
Many have been removed from the pews as they are in
poor repair or get misplaced during the service and then
the sides-people have the task of collecting them up
again!
These kneelers were all hand made by members of the
1960s congregation and are, in my opinion, folk art that’s
worth preserving.
I have deconstructed a few of these kneelers, thrown away the worn-out
stuffing, washed the embroidered panel, and I have so far made bags, a Bible
cover and cushions.
Is anyone else interested in having a go at up-cycling a kneeler? You may have other ideas for creating a useful or decorative object. Please contact Beverley Buckland at Holy
Trinity for more information.

Rayleigh Parish CAMEO Group
(“Come & Meet Each Other”)
We are a friendly group of ladies of a certain age who meet
on Thursdays in the Underspire, between 7.30pm and
9.30pm, unless specified otherwise.
Our Secretaries work very hard to arrange a programme of speakers on a wide
variety of subjects, interspersed with member evenings and the occasional trip
out.
Our programme for May is as follows:
Thursday 2nd May: Heroes and Villains, with Pauline Short
Thursday 9th May: Amusing account of life in schools, with Brian Carline
Wednesday 15th May: Outing to St Albans
Thursday 23rd May: Bible Study with John Townsend
Thursday 30th May: Ascension Day service at Holy Trinity, 8pm
CAMEO also get involved in raising money for charity. This year it’s Bar-N-Bus:
we support a young girl in Brazil through Compassion UK, who have a strong
pastoral ethos. We try to provide an outreach service for those who attend
Church and those who have no connection with a faith group.
If you would like to come along to one of our meetings you would be very
welcome!
Alternatively, please contact our Secretaries:
Mrs S Bentley: 01268-772431
Mrs H Jones: 01268-786245

Trinity Bear Diaries
Trinity Bear is now growing stronger, becoming fitter and is training along with his friends under the watchful eye of their Coach (Monkey). As many of you will know, Monkey lives in the Church, up high, and when not coaching the bears and soft friends he keeps a very watchful eye on the congregation! He is a hard taskmaster but is also very kind and helps all the furry ones to overcome any nervousness of heights.
Margaret Toogood has given her permission, even though she is so poorly, to allow CAMEO to let Biggles the Bear parachute from the Tower. He too is in training, even though he is a veteran flyer and parachutist.
If you are not letting your furry friend parachute from the top of the church tower on 13th July, please consider sponsoring Biggles. I am sure this will be very much appreciated by Margaret. Let's make it a bumper amount raised for 'The Friends of Holy Trinity' via Cameo for Margaret's brave bear. If you wish to do this please contact Janet Davies on 07792635153, who is taking the role over from Margaret, and leave your name and contact number so that Janet can contact you. Thank you, in anticipation.
Remember, sponsored bears and other soft toys jump free of charge. Pick up sponsorship entry forms from the parish centre for any bears who have been training and wish to parachute from the top of the church tower. You may like to take forms for family and friends who may have bears but have not heard that another jump is to take place.

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides update Last term the Thursday Rainbows, Brownies and Guides busied themselves getting involved in the new Girlguiding Programme. The new Programme was launched last summer and comprises six themes: Be Well, Have Adventures, Know Myself, Express Myself, Take Action, and Skills for My Future. 2nd Castle Mount Rainbows worked on the Innovate Skills Builder Badge. Animal Lover and Family Tree badges were undertaken at home. Promise ceremonies were held for the new girls who recently joined the Unit. The Rainbows enjoyed eating pancakes for Shrove Tuesday celebrations and, of course, making crispy chocolate egg cakes for Easter. As ever, the girls enjoyed playing lots of games and taking part in arts and crafts. Meanwhile, 4th Castle Mount West Brownies had a packed term working on two Skills Builder badges. The girls started by putting their First Aid skills to the test and then went on to learn how to look after their bodies and minds. Zero Waste and Performer Interest badges were completed and as always, the girls had lots of fun playing games and singing songs. Finally, 2nd Castle Mount West Guides tackled the Express Myself theme and explored jobs such as town planners and clinical engineers. The Guides also learnt how to communicate more effectively using their verbal skills and body language. Confectioner and Mixology Interest badges were completed at home. The Guides also had visitors in to deliver an E-Safety session and a Period Poverty session, following on from which we donated sanitary products to our local shelter.

Spring Harvest
I recently came back from Spring Harvest, which was held at Butlin’s in
Minehead. This was the first time I have ever been on a Christian holiday and it
was fantastic.
This year’s theme was Praying, which is one of the most important things for us
to do – even when everything is going well, never forget to pray. In the morning,
wake up and thank God for three blessings every day.
I went to a couple of different sessions learning about different ways to pray,
including Active prayer, where you pray walking, painting, singing; the list is
endless, you can pray anywhere.
Pete Greig was the Bible Teacher in the mornings. He is a writer and co-founder
of the 24-7 movement (a movement for prayer which went viral in 1999), and he
has written a couple of books on praying, including God on Mute. The sermons
were based on the Lord’s Prayer, breaking it down to show how we need to
pray.
Praying is difficult for a lot of people, myself included. I am worried that I might
stumble on my words or repeat myself, and what I have learned is that there is
no wrong way to pray: just pray from the heart.
P – Pause – be still in the presence, calm your mind, breathe
R – Rejoice – read a Psalm, thank God for the blessings you have
A – Ask – ask Jesus for what you need: guidance, healing, or anything else
Y – Yield – surrender to the Holy Spirit and listen
Remember God knows what you are going to say before you say it. He is with
you every second of the day and night.
Praying - Keep it Simple – Keep it Real – Keep it Up

Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, It was not just you who was broken that day you hung on a cross; it was your disciples too, their hearts broken just as surely, their dreams and hopes snuffed out, their faith cut from beneath them and laid to rest. It was not just you who rose again that day you emerged from the tomb; it was your disciples too, their hearts beating once more with joyful anticipation, their vision for the future reborn, their faith rekindled, bursting into unquenchable flame. Come to us now where we are broken - where love has died, where hope has faded, where faith has grown old. Reach out and touch us in body, mind and spirit, and help us to walk in the newness of life which you alone can bring. In your name we ask it. Amen Loving God, we praise you again for this season and the assurance it brings that nothing can ever finally overcome your love. You confronted the forces of evil, allowing them to throw everything they could muster against you, and when they had done their worst you emerged victorious, no power able to hold you down. Teach us always to hold on to that truth, and so live each moment in the knowledge that, whatever we may face, your love will see us through. In the name of the risen Christ we pray. Amen Copyright © Nick Fawcett, Worship through the Seasons

An Update from Homegroups Our very friendly Homegroup meets on a Thursday morning in the Yew Tree Room at Holy Trinity. We are a group of up to twelve members and attendance depends on members’ commitments.
We open with a prayer after greeting each other and handing out refreshments, and we begin to work through the course booklet. These booklets are challenging, leading to open discussion on the content, which often provides a trigger for someone to share a personal experience of their journey into faith. All members feel comfortable doing this.
A recent homegroups study – The Fruits of the Spirit – was received eagerly and gave us not only enjoyment, but some very interesting talking points. Another, The Seven Churches: To Asia With Love, from Revelations, highlighted John’s message whilst in exile on the island of Patmos, to the persecuted churches of Asia Minor during the reign of the Emperor Domitian in 95 AD.
During this study, following our research, we found out such interesting details of the life, habits, politics and struggles of the early Christian churches. We realised that our lives, worship and problems today are not dissimilar to how it was all those years ago. John’s words then inspired the seven churches to stay strong and to reject false teaching and habits. His message, given to him by God, is as relevant today in our churches as it was then.
Our welcoming Homegroup helps to fulfil a great need in us all, to strengthen our beliefs, assist our worship and above all, to meet with loving friends in the name and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.

The Leprosy Mission Donations
How did we do? What a magnificent effort! Thank you so much to all Leprosy Mission supporters/donors. I feel we have all been spurred on by the Government’s promise to match our donations. But let it not be said we are not generous anyway. Following the visit of Peter Walker from TLM in January, a total of £834 was sent directly to TLM in the special ‘Heal Nepal’ envelopes we had. In the
meantime, we have continued to collect monies in our normal Leprosy Mission phials and boxes, and this has amounted to £951.86, which has now been sent to TLM, in good time to qualify for the Government’s donation. This Government matching amount totals £1785.86 – added to the Parish amount making £3571.72. But that is not all! We have a growing number of donors who qualify to donate with Gift Aid. And the Gift Aid amount on all our submissions is a further £132.60. Normally we would expect to raise about £1500 at this time of year, but our grand total effect for TLM is £3704.32.
The Anandaban Hospital in Nepal will truly benefit from our efforts. Once again – THANK YOU TO ALL WHO DONATED.
David Medcraft.

Flushed Away – preventable diseases caused by poor
hygiene
Monica (from Zambia) describes the
impact the Toilet Twinning initiative
can have: “When we had a toilet, we
discovered that diseases became a
thing of the past. Having a toilet
reduces the chance of being sick and
improves the health of the whole
family. At night, it is much safer for
me.”
Monica now has a safe, clean place
to go to the toilet thanks to Toilet
Twinning.
Have you seen our twinned loos at
Holy Trinity Church? We have
twinned a number of toilets (the
image is the disabled loo in the Parish
Centre, twinned with Bihar, in India).
We are hoping to do the rest of the toilets across the Parish soon, but we thought
you might want to examine this initiative for your own homes / businesses.
It is not too expensive, and you can bring a gift of basic sanitation and hygiene
improvements that will last a community many years.
For details go to https://www.toilettwinning.org/
The authors can be contacted as follows:
Mike Thakoordin on 01268 422083
John Townsend on 01268 780938

NINE letter word, which spells the name of a book in the Bible.
We have found 34, but there may be more! Anything over 20 is good. Over 25
is very good. 30+ is brilliant!
For answers please see page 27. To be named as a WINNER in next month’s

Psalm 16
1 Keep me safe, O God,
for I have come to you for refuge. 2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you.” 3 The godly people in the land
are my true heroes! I take pleasure in them!
4 Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods. I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood
Or even speak the names of their gods. 5 Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing.
You guard all that is mine. 6 The land you have given me is a pleasant land.
What a wonderful inheritance! 7 I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. 8 I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. 9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
My body rests in safety. 10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead
or allow your holy one to rot in the grave. 11 You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever
