Congratulations to our 2019 Housing Award winners whowere announced at the Annual Meeting. They include:

Tiffany Robinson, Maryland Secretary of Labor,received the prestigious Housing Leadership Award forher service and dedication to the affordable housingindustry in Maryland. The award recognizes an elected orappointed official or industry leader who has shownoutstanding leadership in promoting, preserving andproducing affordable rental housing throughout the state.We thank Secretary Robinson for her service to the stateand the affordable housing industry and wish her well inher new position at the Department of Labor!

Chickie Grayson of Enterprise Homes received thePresident’s Award that recognizes an individual ororganization who has demonstrated outstandingleadership and collaboration in advancing the affordablehousing industry in Maryland. During her more than 30-year career with Enterprise Homes, Ms. Grayson workedto develop high-quality affordable housing for people fromall walks of life. The Innovation Award, which celebrates innovationwithin the affordable rental housing community inMaryland, was awarded to a project and a serviceprogram this year. Homes on Johnson's Pond is anew affordable housing community that was built on theVillage of Hope campus in Salisbury, Maryland. Village ofHope is a nonprofit that provides transitional housing forhomeless women and children, and through an innovativepartnership with Homes for America and Osprey PropertyCompany, they were able to sell a portion of their land forthe development of a 63-unit garden style apartmentcommunity. Monte Verde Resident Services Program isa senior community located in the Park Heightsneighborhood of Baltimore City. After a communityassessment revealed that the greatest need wasaccessing health care services, AHC developed theHealth & Wellness Program to create a comprehensivehealth network and services available at the property.

FY21 Community Partnership Grant ApplicationProcess Open

The sixth round of the Community Partnership GrantProgram application process is now open. The programawards competitive grants to nonprofit organizationsserving the needs of Frederick County residents. Thisyear, grants will specifically target senior, housing andcommunity needs.

Maryland has surpassed the milestone for lending over$40 million to more than 170 small businesses throughDHCD’s Neighborhood BusinessWorks program thatprovides gap financing to new and expanding smallbusinesses located in priority funding areas andOpportunity Zones across the state. The programachieved the milestone with a loan to convert adesanctified former church in Southeast Baltimore into a15,000-square-foot brewpub, which is expected to openlater this year.

DHCD also completed their series of listening sessions tosolicit community feedback on the 2019 QAP in Octoberand expects to release the draft 2020 QAP later thismonth with comments due in December. They anticipate

having a public hearing and finalizing the QAP in early2020 with the next competitive round in May, following asimilar schedule as last year.

P R O J E C T S P O T L I G H T

Homes on Johnson's Pond, Salisbury, MD

Homes on Johnson's Pond is a new affordable housingcommunity built on the Village of Hope (VOH) campus inSalisbury, MD. This 63-unit garden-style apartmentcomplex is conveniently located near publictransportation, schools, shopping and more. VOH is anonprofit that provides transitional housing for homelesswomen and children, and through an innovativepartnership with Homes for America and Osprey PropertyCompany, they were able to sell a portion of their land todevelop Homes on Johnson's Pond.

These apartments give priority to families moving out ofVOH transitional housing, as well as those who receiveSection 811 assistance. Fifteen percent of the units arereserved for persons with disabilities. VOH and Homes forAmerica work together to provide a range of residentservices. The community at this complex have access toa wide variety of activities and services, include healthand wellness programs, educational programs, summersafety seminars, financial workshops, tutoring programsand summer camps.

In addition to Homes for America, Osprey PropertyCompany and Village of Hope, other development teammembers included Harkins Builders, Architecture ByDesign, Pando Alliance, and Habitat America.
