OUR CREDENTIALS

FROMTHE

EDITOR

First, a letter from a reader After a busy week I have just finished last weekend’s edition and as I closed it, after tearing out so many articles to feed my friends, I closed it and went “WOW”! It just gets better and better. A wonderful magazine and I just wanted to tell you how I appreciate it each and every week. Thank youCOLLEEN WILSON There are few greater pleasures for an editor or a writer than the knowledge that their work is read, understood and appreciated. That we’ve informed, entertained or moved readers; that we’ve connected. Otherwise, why do what we do?It’s a sentiment that runs through my mind each week as I sift through the many hundreds of comments posted on our digital stories, emailed to me, and, yes, handwritten and sent by post. Our award-winning journalists write about quiet achievers and high profile people, strange events, national issues, wonderful places and new discoveries. Our columnists illuminate and ruminate; sometimes they infuriate.Ultimately, we write to inform and entertain and we write because we want people to read our work. To engage. And if we can enrich readers’ lives along the way, create a moment of enjoyment in their busy weekends, all the better Just a quick note to congratulate you on an outstanding weekend mag. The content is excellent and entertaining. Your creative design team are outstanding; clean, fresh and inspiring. In our busy worlds we don’t often give feedback where due, but on this rainy Saturday morning, while enjoying a good coffee and enjoyable read ... I thought “today’s the day!” Warmest TRISH MURRAY

OUR COLUMNISTS

PHILLIP ADAMS | Phillip Adams is a prolific and sometimes controversial broadcaster, writer and film-maker. As presenter of the ABC’s Late Night Live he has interviewed thousands of the world’s most influential politicians, novelists, theologians, economists, philosophers and sundry conversationalists. Largely self-educated, he’s the author of over 20 books, including The Unspeakable Adams and Retreat From Tolerance. His writing has appeared in many influential publications and he has been a contributor to The Times and The Financial Times in London, and to The New York Times.

GLYNIS TRAILL-NASH | Glynis is The Australian’s fashion editor covering upfront news stories, features, trend and opinion pieces and columns across all sections of the paper, including the monthly luxury glossy Wish, The Weekend Australian Magazine and online. Glynis regularly travels overseas, most often to the UK, Paris and New York, to cover fashion weeks, including haute couture, specific stories and events, as well as interstate to cover events such as the Melbourne Cup Carnival, where she is on the judging panel for Fashions on the Field.

JAMES HALLIDAY | James is The Australian’s resident wine writer and critic. Since 1979 he has written and co-authored more than 40 books on wine, including contributions to the Larousse Encyclopaedia of Wine and The Oxford Companion to Wine. Since 1986 he has published an annual overview of Australian wine which (since 2000) has been entitled the James Halliday Annual Wine Companion. British wine writer Jancis Robinson has described Halliday as the protégé of Len Evans and “Australia’s leading wine writer”.

JOHN LETHLEAN | Australia’s only national restaurant reviewer, John travels the country dining at our best new restaurants. Describing himself as an “innocent food writer at The Australian, collector of restaurant gossip, reviewer of tables, spotter of errant apostrophes and author of occasional amusing typos”, John has long been a landmark in the industry and a fiercely independent voice among food writers.

NIKKI GEMMELL | Nikki’s novels include Shiver, Cleave (Alice Springs in the US), Lovesong, The Book of Rapture, The Bride Stripped Bare and its follow-up, With My Body. She has also written two works of non-fiction: Pleasure: An Almanac for the Heart, and Why You Are Australian. Her work has been critically acclaimed internationally and translated into many languages. In France she has been described as a female Jack Kerouac; in Australia as one of the most original and engaging authors of her generation.

TRAVEL EDITION FEBRUARY 2019*

Australian’s love to travel, whether it’s a short break or circumnavigating the country, we all love to explore. This is no more evident in the amazing nominations for the Australian Tourism Awards each year which The Weekend Australian Magazine is a proud sponsor of.This year we ticked off a bucket list of great Australian destinations done largely in comfort: a cruise in the magnificent Kimberley region; a few blissful days on Queensland’s Orpheus and Bedarra Islands; a trip down memory lane at the clifftop Hydro Majestic hotel in the Blue Mountains and a wine tour with all the bells and whistles in the Barossa. For the more active we’ve got a four-day Great Ocean Walk in Victoria, a journey to Tasmania’s south-west wilderness and a 4WD trip through the top end to Kakadu. We hope to give you a few ideas for your holiday, or, at the very least, a reminder that we live in a remarkable country.

TOP 50 RESTAURANTS AUGUST 2019*

The Hot 50 Restaurant Awards will be announced in August in a special issue of The Weekend Australian Magazine. This issue will feature a list of all the winners, along with a profile of the winning restaurants.

It will be compiled by our judging panel including John Lethlean, The Australian’s resident restaurant critic and food writer, and The Australian’s food editor Necia Wilden. The winners of the Hot 50 are the chefs, sommeliers and restaurants with creative flair and obvious passion for amazing food, design, innovation, individuality, outstanding wines, impeccable service and great value for diners.

HALLIDAY’S TOP 100 NOVEMBER 2019*

Each year The Weekend Australian produces the highly anticipated edition of James Halliday’s Top 100. James Halliday has contributed to The Australian for three decades, building a loyal readership with his wine editorial within The Weekend Australian Magazine.

This special issue features James’ top picks, which are categorised under whites and reds under and over $20 as well as sparkling wines and champagne.’
