2020 Pro Season Projection Set for HISTORY MAKER BASEBALL

There’s nothing quite like Opening Day of the big league baseball season! That was quite literally the case for the 2020 season, right? But one of the glorious things about the tabletop sports hobby is the ability to generate plausible, highly realistic “what if” scenari-os with cards and dice. That’s exactly what we’re doing here: presenting the 2020 Pro Season Projection Set for HISTORY MAKER BASEBALL Big League Baseball Game!

Travis Jansen is a good friend of PLAAY Games, and is “the man” who gets the credit for putting together this unique card set. Travis reached out to me when the COVID crisis first hit and it became apparent that the baseball season wasn’t going to start on time, and might not get started at all. He was putting together his own projection set and wanted me to provide some insights. He also tossed out the idea of making these cards available to the community, either as a newsletter freebie or--Travis has always been concerned about not doing anything that might hurt our business--as something people could perhaps purchase. At the time, we had just re-leased our 2019 Pro Season cards, and I was concerned about the impact that a projection set freebie would have on sales. But I also felt that offering the set for sale didn’t feel quite right, either, especially given the economic situation of so many folks in our hobby. SO ultimately, I decided that goodwill outweighs economics, and these cards are now available for everyone to enjoy.

A couple notes about this set...

The player qualities/attributes are based on projected stats for the 2020 season from the FanGraphs baseball website, https://www.fangraphs.com. Each team consists of a projected 26-man roster. It’s not easy to project fielding ratings so all qualified players utilize their UZR rating from their top position from the previous season. The position listed on each player’s card is a combination of their projected position for 2020 (listed first) followed by their top position(s) from previous seasons.

As we have always said, HMB represents a “blue sky” approach to a baseball season--and that approach has never been more ap-plicable than right now! As such, we highly recommend using the Game Day procedure to adjust player qualities and bring about the kind of variation that is present in a real baseball season.

You’ll also notice a new quality on Travis’ cards, the TERSE quality. TERSE is given to pitchers who had a low innings pitched per appearance, bringing things more in line with today’s style of pitching management. It works like this...

l Starting pitchers with a projected IP/G < 5.3 get the TERSE quality. They are allowed to pitch three innings FRESH, but only two innings SEMI-FRESH. However, a TERSE starting pitcher can pitch into the later innings using the shutout freshness rule.

l Relievers with a projected IP/G < 1.3 also get the TERSE quality. They are allowed to pitch one inning FRESH, but that’s it. They lose all FRESH-ness after their one inning of work.

As an aside, TERSE is designed to complement the STRONG option from the advanced options section of the HMB rules booklet. (There are no STRONG pitchers in this set.) Also, it bears mentioning that there’s no SEMI-TERSE quality, at least not in this set.

Batting orders were created using the fan graphs roto resource page (https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource). As always, feel free to adjust batting orders based on actual lineups and personal preference--they’re suggested batting orders only.

Umpire cards are mostly based on the 2019 season, although we did make some adjustments based on anecdotal/historical reputa-tions.
