FROM THE PASTOR

Eyes and Ears (and Hands and even Hearts) 16But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

Matthew 13:16

27Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27

The bridge crossing over the creek coming into my neighborhood was truly un-remarkable. One like probably a million others built out of prestressed concrete and covered with asphalt. The view of the creek bed and the small ravine it had cut out of the landscape was pretty sometimes, in the spring when the plum trees were blooming, and in the winter after a heavy snowfall. But to be honest in the decades that I lived there, I gave that bridge no thought.

Until, that is, I found out homeless people were living beneath it. Yes, I had heard of people living under bridges years before that day, and I vaguely recall dismissing the idea of someone living under that bridge because it was seem-ingly uninhabitable, but when one of their camp fires got out of control and burned a fair swath through the underbrush threatening neighboring business-es, it became clear that people really were living under and around that bridge.

And I never saw them. I might have looked once or twice, but in the literally thousands of times I crossed that bridge, often on foot or on a bicycle, I never saw them. Or should I say, I never consciously processed what I saw. My eyes did indeed see the evidence that they were there. I am sure I saw them walking to and from and around the neighborhood. But even though I saw them with my eyes, I never recognized them. I never saw them with my heart.

One of our most important callings as Christians is, I think, truly being the body of Christ in the world. Being Jesus’ eyes and ears and hands. Seeing what is really going on in the world around us, seeing the people who are hurting, see-ing the joy and the wonder as well. Hearing their stories and knowing their names. Using our hands and voices and lives to bring God’s love and care and compassion into being for the people and for the world around us. One of our most important callings is to truly see.

Those goofy optical illusions we used to see in MAD Magazine, and we now giggle about on Facebook, reveal what science has been telling us for years: really seeing is a difficult task. Our brains are wired in such a way that we see the things that are necessary for us to get through the day, a snake that might bite us or the friend that might help us, and to process as little other information as is possible. That is most of the time a good thing, or we would not be able to function in our daily lives. But we are called to get past that, to see what most others would miss, to notice the things that not only matter to us, but also the things that matter to our neighbors and to God.

You have of course all done it. You have been the one who noticed the sad expression on a friends face and quietly let them know that you were there for them. And you have indeed seen the person who needed a little help, a word of encouragement or a hand up and, having truly seen them, followed the Spirit’s leading to help them. You have seen the good and the beauty in the world and reminded those around you that God is still at work creating life and love in the

Jerry and I would like to give a big thank you to the Evangelism Commit-tee for the beautiful 50th anniversary cake we all shared on May 2. Thank you to all who gave cards and shared sentiments. We are blessed to have so many good friends at Kent. It was a special morning.

Jerry & Kandy Husbands

Thank You

world, when others could only see darkness and turmoil.

You are the body of Christ, each of you members of it. And yes, we all have different gifts and skills, strengths and weaknesses, but we are also all called to be the eyes and the ears and the hands of the body of Christ.

What do you see when you look around you? What do you see in your family, your condominium complex, our community, our congregation? What do you see and what do you hear, what can we do with our hearts and our hands? For as the saying goes, it is “God’s work and our Hands,” but it is also our eyes and our ears and especially our hearts.

As I begin my first summer at The Lake, I am so excited to experience all that life in our congregation and our community offers. I pray that it will be an espe-cially wonderful season for all of you, filled with all the wonderful things that we hope for in the summer. And I also pray that it will be filled with sights and sounds and opportunities to be the body of Christ for our community, our fami-lies, and for one another.

God bless you all, Pastor Ed

To Pastor Ed and Members of Kent Memorial Lutheran Church,

Thank you for all of the prayers and care you gave our family with the loss of Gerry. We felt very fortunate to belong to such a wonderful church and always felt so welcome there.

WORSHIP, FOOD & FIREWORKS

Join us Fourth of July evening (it’s a Sunday this year) for a fun worship experience in the Ireland Out-door Chapel followed by hotdogs, maybe even a campfire at the parsonage so we can toast up some s’mores, and of course the firework display on The Lake. A watermelon or two would sure be nice, and maybe even a taste of homemade ice cream. Lot’s of laughs and good fellowship are sure to be had by all. Worship is at 7:30 p.m., and yes, we will have the doors open to the basement of the church for bathroom and AC access!

Bring your plates, utensils & beverages. Invite your family & neighbors!

Everything we have is a gift from God, and stewardship is our response to these gifts!

First the good news, the finance committee and Council work hard to minimize expenses as much as possible, so Kent is right on track with it’s budget in regards to it’s expenses year to date. The bad news is that income isn’t keeping up with expenses so far this year. Our income is 15% below our expenses, a difference of a little over $10,000 year to date.

Now we know that we are coming into summer, so traditionally we should see some visitors that will boost our summer income. But we don’t know how much that will be. And like all good things, summer will come to an end.

Remember, God blesses those who give. St Paul puts it this way in 2 Corinthians 9:6-8, “The person who sows sparingly will also reap spar-ingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each one of you should give just as he has decided in his heart, not re-luctantly or under compulsion, because God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace overflow to you so that because you have enough of everything in every way at all times, you will overflow in every good work.”

So I just ask you as you count your blessings this summer, be sure to continue to count Kent as one of your blessings.

Other verses to ponder: Psalm 112: 9, 1 Timothy 6:9-10, Leviticus 27:30, Proverbs 3: 9-10, 11:24-25 & 22:9, 1 Corinthians 16:2, Luke 6:38.

Peace and Blessings! Michael Wagner

Page 13

FINANCIAL NOTES:

A. Current Financial Situation – Kent is now behind (expenses over giving) for the first 4 months of 2021 by $10,270. Our expenses are right on budget through April 2021. Even though our giving is similar to past years for January through April, our budgeted ex-penses are now higher. Please examine if your giving is on track compared to your expectations since our journey started last Sep-tember with our new pastor.

B. Thrivent Action Teams – Thrivent provides $250 per project to kick-start a fundraiser, educational event, or service project for Kent or the community. Each qualifying Thrivent member can sub-mit two projects per year for approval by Thrivent. This is an excel-lent way to provide funds to do projects and not have to use Kent budgeted monies. If you have questions about this, please contact Joyce Wanamaker, Kathy Fair, or Al Mohling.

C. Annual Thrivent Choice Dollar Designation - Eligible members can recommend where Thrivent distributes a portion of its charita-ble funding by directing Choice Dollars®. Members be-come eligible for Thrivent Choice based on insurance premiums, contract values, and Thrivent volunteer leadership. Log on now to the Thrivent website to direct your Choice Dollars to Kent Memori-al. Log in with your ID and password, and then follow this path:

• What We Offer • Generosity

• Thrivent Choice

• Direct Choice Dollars

• Pick/Confirm the Organization

D. TD Ameritrade Account - As you make distributions from your retirement IRA’s or investments, please visit with your financial planner/accountant about the possibility of transferring some of those funds to the Kent TD Ameritrade account. The transfer might be able to be made with no capital gains tax consequence to you. If you have questions about this, please contact Gail Kruse or Al Mohling.

NEW! NEW! NEW!

New Members and Enquiring Minds! It has been a while, I am told, since we have made any official new members, or had a class on what it means to be a Lutheran. Why do Lutherans do the things we do? How are we different from other denomi-nations? Just what am I getting myself into if I join a Lutheran Church?

All these questions and more will be answered at our new class, “Everything You Wanted to Know About Being a Lutheran,” aka “Everything we have forgotten since confirmation class.”

Join us Sunday June 13 during Fellowship time between services at the north end of the Fellowship Hall. If this time doesn’t work for you and you would still like to join Kent or just hear what Pastor Ed has to share, please let him know, 573-374-5267.

Communion Visitor Training Communion, as we are learning so well during this pandemic, is one of the most important and meaningful parts of our worship life. It is espe-cially so for those of us who are unable to get out and attend worship in their home congregation. And it is extra special when someone comes and shares the Lord’s Supper with those who are “shut-in.”

Pastor Ed is having a training session for those who are interested or curious about being a Communion Visitor. He will give you all of the re-sources you will need so that if you choose to volunteer to visit one or more of our shut-ins you can do so with confidence and truly enjoy your visit.

It will be Sunday June 20 between services during fellowship hour at the north end of the fellowship hall so that anyone who wants may listen in.

This is an important and such a very meaningful ministry. Sharing the body and blood of Christ with your fellow Church members is an experi-ence that will truly bless you and them.
