    1 Functional Units

This chapter describes the configuration of each functional unit.

The number of functional units and PBAs depends on the configuration ofthe BSC. In the figure above, the letters X, Y and Z are used to indicate themaximum numbers of the associated functional unit or PBA. The table belowlists the meanings of X, Y and Z for each of the six BSC configurations.

    Letter Configuration

    - 1 2 3 4 5 6

    X 1 4 6 9 11 14

    Y 2 3 5 6 8 9

    Z 1 1 2 2 3 3

Table 1: Meaning of X, Y and Z for each BSC Configuration

Full details of the BSC configurations are provided in BSC Configurations ( Section 2) .

Although the access switches are functionally part of the DSN, they arephysically part of the associated TSU.

    1.3.3 Ater TSU BPA

The BPA of the Ater TSU is:

    BPA-ATER16 3BK 06450 AAAA

The number of Ater TSUs, PBAs and BPAs depends on the configuration. Referto the Introduction (Section 2.1) in BSC Configurations .

As shown in Figure 3 above, the BSC performs 4:1 multiplexing of the AterInterfaces. However, the BSC can perform 3:1 multiplexing.

The BSC does this as follows:

DTCCs 1 to 3 are multiplexed by ASMB1

DTCCs 5 to 7 are multiplexed by ASMB2

DTCCs 4 and 8 do not carry traffic.

    1.5.7 Cross Links

Some switch ports can be used, but are not connected directly to a controlelement. In this case, cross links are added to these ports to allow them tobe initialized when power is applied. Table 2 lists the cross links required forconfigurations 1 and 2. Table 3 lists the cross links required for configurations

    3, 4, 5 and 6.

    2 BSC Configurations

2.1 IntroductionThere are six BSC configurations. Each configuration is fixed with regard to thenumbers of cabinets, TSUs, PBAs and BPAs (see Table 5 ). Configuration 1is the minimum configuration. Configuration 2 is the first extension step.It is created by extending Configuration 1 with an extension kit. Similarly,Configuration 3 is created by extending Configuration 2 with an extension kit.The other configurations are created in a similar way.

    2.1.1 Configuration-Independent Capacities and Dimensioning

Some capacities and dimensioning requirements are independent of theBSC configurations. The table below lists these capacities and dimensioningrequirements.

    Capacity or Dimensioning Item Quantities

Transceiver Equipment with Full-Rate Frame Unit per

TCU or Radio signaling Link per TCU.

Table 4: Configuration-Independent Capacities and Dimensioning

Note: An Adjacent (or Neighboring) Cell is any cell known to the BSC. This includesits own cells and those of other BSCs to which handovers are made, or received.

Adjacencies are pairs of cells which have borders. Two adjacent cells, A and Bhave two adjacencies, A-B and B-A. Three adjacent cells, A, B and C havesix adjacencies, A-B, A-C, B-A, B-C, C-A and C-B.

    2.1.2 Configuration-Dependent Capacities and Dimensioning

The quantities of each type of TSU, PBA and BPA depend on the BSCconfiguration.

The table below lists, for each configuration, the:

    Number of cabinets

    Capacity

Number of TSUs, PBAs and BPAs.

The table also lists the reference numbers and variants of the PBAs and BPAs.

The configurations are also identified according to the number of TCUC andDTCC PBAs (see table below).

    BSC 112/72 112 72 6

Table 6: Alternative Method of Identifying Configurations

There are two options for each configuration as follows:

The impedance of the Abis and Ater Interfaces can be 75 or 120

The power supply can be 3-wire or 2-wire.

These options mean that there are four subtypes for each basic configurationas follows:

    75 , 2-wire

    75 , 3-wire

    120 , 2-wire

    120 , 3-wire.

Note: The mixing of 75 and 120 Interfaces is not possible.
