March 2017 20th Annual Putnam County Hospice Night Out a Big Success The 20th Annual Hospice Night Out was held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Ottawa Knights of Columbus Hall. “Run for the Roses” was the theme for the Kentucky Derby style event this year! The evening began with appetizers served from 5:00-6:00 pm, with a wedding style dinner catered by Henry’s Restaurant immediately following. The live auction and horse racing began at 7:00 pm. Aaron Siefker auctioned off 16 items on the live auction. Ten pre-recorded horse races were shown to the crowd of over 500 attendees. Jeff Loehrke, Sr. was the Master of Ceremony and celebrated his 20th year emceeing the event! One of the items up for bid was the infamous “Hearts of Hospice” pie. The pie was baked and donated by an employee, Laura Buckland, and was sold for $1,800.00. One of the items to bring in the highest bid was a diamond ring, donated by Beckman Jewelers, that ended with a bid of $2,200. In addition to the live auction and horse racing, guests could bid on silent auction items and buy raffle tickets in hopes to win one of the many donated items. A new feature this year was the photo booth, which many guests stopped to capture a picture. And the night also featured a costume contest, where one man and one woman walked off with gift cards as their winnings. The Ottawa Senior Citizens received the 2017 Putnam County Hospice Group of the Year Award. The group was honored for providing Putnam County Hospice patients with quilts made by their quilting group. The fundraiser is held annually to assist with the costs associated with hospice care. Often times the reimbursement received is not enough to cover the costs of care provided to the patient. Medications and durable medical equipment that are so important in helping patients with comfort during their last days can cost more than what is reimbursed. Fundraising also covers the 13-month Bereavement Program that follows families through their grief and supports them after the loss of a loved one, since this receives no reimbursement. Putnam County Hospice would like to thank everyone who donated their time and effort to make the night enjoyable and successful. Mark your calendars for next year’s “Run for the Roses”. The event is slated for Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Ottawa Senior Center Honored as Group of the Year

The Ottawa Senior Citizens provide Putnam County Hospice patients with quilts made by their quilting group. Volunteers wash, iron, and cut all fabric into squares. Then the quilting group meets once a month at the Senior Center to assemble and design each quilt. Members take home the fabric squares and then begin to sew them together. Each quilt takes over 10 hours to make. On average, each of the ladies makes about 2 quilts per month. This group of ladies has been dedicating their time to quilting for many years now and Putnam County Hospice is so thankful for all of their time and hard work. The Center uses mostly all donated fabric to make the quilts. If you have fabric you would like to donate, or if you would like to help out at the Center, please call Sue Barnhart at 419-523-5593.
