Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S., and every 13 minutes, a life is lost to this disease. First diagnosed in May 2011, Linda fought a brave battle against breast cancer at the very young age of 45. She was a strong, courageous, and determined young woman who did not accept defeat.

Although she is not physically with us as we run this race in her honor, rest assured, she is still victorious. As a runner and breast cancer warrior, her feat - “4 Miles 4 Linda”- will help promote fitness among the community and invite

participants to enhance their physical, mental and emotional well-being.

“This morning I had my yearly mammogram at Graham Hospital...like I have for years. Although I was very aware of the new robes that were purchased from the fundraiser event that Graham

Hospital held last year in honor of Linda, I was not aware of the plaque that would be displayed in the dressing room. I felt more comfortable than I ever have while getting a mammogram. These

robes are awesome - way better than a hospital gown!! I had a hard time holding back the tears. I couldn’t help but feel extremely grateful that I was able to be Linda’s friend and classmate for so

many years. It was the best mammogram I ever had!!!” - Lori Wickman

Wrapped In

Ribbon Of

Strength &

Courage

With tremendous support from participants, sponsors, family & friends, we now have beautifully embroidered luxurious waffle-textured robes for our patients who visit Graham Hospital for their annual mammogram. In addition, through the generosity of so many, we were able to award Linda’s daughter, Morgan, with a scholarship for $1,000 to ISU where she is studying to be a Dietitian, just as her mother was.

Linda Myers Brown “Love Of Nursing” Scholarship

The family started this scholarship as recognition for Linda’s “Love of Nursing”

Profession, her love of Graham Hospital and her love of the Graham School of Nursing. For 37 years at Graham, Linda interacted with hundreds of fellow Graham employees, held the hands of thousands of moms, comforted thousands of dads, and held the precious gift of a newborn baby in her hands as they struggled to enter into this world.

This annual scholarship which is a gift of $1,000 is awarded to a 2nd or 3rd year nursing student. The family selects the recipient, and the scholarship is awarded at Graham’s graduation.

Philda Mccombs Memorial Scholarship

Philda McCombs, with her kind-hearted, dedicated and thoughtful ways, cherished the opportunity she was given to care for so many as a nurse at Graham Hospital. In her loving memory and to honor her wishes, Philda’s family established the Philda McCombs Memorial Scholarship.

This annual scholarship, which is a gift of $500, affords the family the opportunity to keep Philda’s memory alive, as well as helping to financially support nursing students so that they might have the same opportunity as Philda was given. The family selects the recipient, and the scholarship is awarded at Graham’s graduation. The applicant must be a 2nd or 3rd year nursing student.

Helen (Tarter) Saunders Memorial Scholarship

Helen (Tarter) Saunders was a 1943 graduate from the Graham Hospital School of Nursing. She was a very dedicated, hard-working, and loving woman. Helen had very strong faith and loved to share her faith with everyone. She was happily married for nearly 65 years to Howard Saunders.

This annual scholarship, which is a gift of $2,000 was established in her loving memory and is awarded to a 2nd or 3rd year nursing student with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The family selects the recipient, and the scholarship is awarded at Graham’s graduation.

After more than one year in business, this donation-based shop has been a choice destination for bargain-seeking locals. With an extremely large selection of clothing (men, women & children), jewelry and accessories, household goods, small furniture items, toys, and much more, if there’s anything at all that you need, you’ll want to stop by since you just might find it without shopping elsewhere, and spending too much. And, what’s even better, you can be sure that your dollars are being put to good use.

Just look what the proceeds from The Graham Thrift Shop have purchased so far:

Patient/Staff Communication Boards for patient rooms at Graham Hospital. The new boards have been customized for each inpatient area to allow for a personalized care experience. The goal is to help promote communication between patient care staff, patients and families, and also engage the patients in their care. The boards are large in size (24” x 36”), have general hospital information on them (room number, telephone number, patient advocate extension, Nursing Director), important patient information (pain scale, fall risk, presence of personal items such as dentures or glasses) and then additional areas for communication between

staff and patient/family (emergency contact, plan of care and any questions). Graham Hospital is excited to offer these to patient care areas. As an organization, Graham realizes communication is key between our providers, patients and families. We believe the addition of these boards will help facilitate the communication and, in turn, increase our patient satisfaction.

Patient/Staff Communication Boards - $20,550

Our Imaging Department is happy to announce that we can now perform CT Colonography, also known as “Virtual Colonoscopy,” a colorectal cancer screening method using a CT scan to view the inside of the colon. This is all due to the generosity of the Thrift Shop providing the funds for the required insufflator device and staff training. Computer software combines the CT images to form a three-dimensional image of the colon. The images are similar to what is seen during a conventional colonoscopy. CT Colonography may prove to be especially helpful:

Graham…..For All Your Healthcare AND Shopping Needs

• For elderly patients who are frail or infirm.• When colonoscopy is attempted but incomplete

because the full length of the colon is not visualized (roughly 10-20% of patients fall into this category). In this category the colon will already have been cleansed, and CT Colonography can be done the same day.

• In the event a tumor is found on colonoscopy and is large enough it blocks the scope.

CT Colonography - $12,400

With the Graham Wellness Center seeing an average of 70-80 patients per day, their previous scale was getting an awful lot of use, and showing some inconsistencies with its functionality, so the Thrift Shop was able to purchase a new high-capacity Detecto Scale for the Center. In addition, as patients prepare for, or cool

down from, an exercise class or session, the staff will be featuring various health/fitness-related educational topics with patients on their new 46” flat screen television.

Detecto Scale - $1,60046” Flat Screen TV - $400

Myairvo is a portable device used to provide high flow and high concentrations of oxygen in areas that are not supplied with compressed gasses. The Myairvo allows the attachment of heated high flow for patients with COPD and CHF. This device will be used in the skilled nursing unit to better help transition patients that have a very high oxygen demand. It can also be used with hospice patients with long-term lung disease for a comfort measure.

Myairvo - $3,600

In addition, proceeds from the Thrift Shop provide ongoing support for the Health & Wellness Connection Clinic, for patients in need of medications, x-rays and lab services.

The Foundation Director’s office and that of her assistant are housed at Graham Hospital, within the Marketing suite on the first floor. The Foundation President’s office is located in Hospital Administration on the lower level of the hospital.

Hospitals today are faced with the challenge of providing healthcare services to meet the rapidly growing and changing healthcare needs of our population. New technology and services are needed to stay current with the latest in diagnostic methods and treatment for patients. Like most hospitals, Graham Hospital receives the bulk of its revenue from Medicaid and Medicare. This creates a financial challenge since these programs reimburse hospitals only a portion of the costs to deliver services. Gifts and bequests to the Graham Hospital Foundation provide resources for services and equipment that might otherwise not be available.

The Foundation offers a wide range of opportunities to help you provide for your healthcare needs as well as that of your loved ones. In addition to cash gifts, memorials and recognition to honor others, you can also remember the Graham Hospital Foundation in your will, living trust or life insurance. In many cases, tax savings can be realized, as well as attractive rates of interest through gift annuities.
