THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 14, 2020
My Dear Parishioners,
Praised Be Jesus Christ! The final touches of our Church Renova on Project were completed this week. Namely, the Holy Spirit image in the
center of the apse on the ceiling above the altar; and the images of Sts. Brendan and Bridget of Ireland flanked by two adoring angels. These works of art were created by Kenne Square’s own, Neilson Carlin whose Academy of Fine Art is just blocks away on Willow Street. Neil’s most famous work is that of the Holy Family which he created for the 2015 World Mee ng of Family held in Philadelphia. But his work can be found in shrines and cathedrals across the country. In the coming weeks, I plan on sharing more about Neil and his work. But suffice it to say, I am delighted to have his fine work now adorning our beau ful Church of St. Patrick. My thanks to Neil and all our parishioners gave so much of themselves for that par cular part of the project which brings our Church renova on to a comple on.
While our Church building renova on is now complete, the work of building up the Church con nues on and in a certain sense is never completed. This week, we celebrate the con nuance of that work in some of our youngest parishioners. Today, they receive Jesus for the first me in the Eucharist and that life of Christ already with them is strengthened, fed and nourished. A word of thanks to all our catechists and parents of our first communicants for con nuing to share and support that gi of faith which our li le ones have received. May that feeding, nourishing and teaching con nue! Day-by-day, Step-by-step, Sunday a er Sunday with the grace of the Lord Jesus!
Over the weeks of the pandemic, I’ve been mee ng regularly via Zoom with the pastors of the local area. We’ve been checking in with one another, suppor ng each other, hearing the challenges and receiving encouragement in our respec ve roles. For me personally, this has been one of the graces of the pandemic. The friendship among the pastors of our various churches in Kenne is palpable, even audible. I was delighted that so many of them accepted the invite of Pope Francis for Chris an Churches to ring their bells to beg heaven’s help in this me. It really was awesome, to hear the Bap st, Presbyterian and Catholic Bells gonging thru town on Wednesdays at noon.
This past Monday, we met again and our un-scripted mee ng found us listening, sharing and reflec ng about the reality of racism in our culture and more specifically in our own communi es. Hearing the stories of our African-American pastors in town was a beau ful moment of grace. I want you to know that that conversa on happened and will con nue. At this moment of history, we need to have such a conversa ons. Now is the me for both a corporate and a personal examen of conscience, to repent for any way that we ourselves have contributed to hate and prejudice in our rela onships with one another.
The famous song “LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH” is one that most Chris an people like to sing. The last line of that song, would be a good line for all of us to think of: “Let it begin with me.” That’s a powerful line, a beau ful prayer and a challenge for us all. “Let it begin with me.” I encourage all to make those 5 words our own and allow God who begins the good work in us, to bring us as His Church to a more perfect fulfillment.
Peace,
Fr. Rogers 236

My name is Ryan Nguyen. I'm a seminarian from St. Martin of Tours parish in Northeast Philly. This summer I’m assigned at St. Patrick and I’m thrilled to be here—not just because I love to eat pizza stuffed mushrooms but I also love the historical roots of the American Revolution that can be traced to Kennett Square. Ameri-can Independence means a lot to me since my father was a South Vietnamese captain who was training Vietnamese soldiers to fight alongside U.S. troops during the Vietnam War.
July 4th is just a few weeks away, but I can see the “firework” at the end of the tunnel as we are now in the yellow phase of reopen-ing. Last week we had a soft reopening at St. Patrick and it was a pleasure to meet many of you who were so gracious in welcoming me. This same warmth and generosity reminds me of the people of Ireland who welcomed St. Patrick with open arms. And, if St. Pat-rick were here today, perhaps he would again use the analogy of the three leaves on the shamrock to explain how there can be Three Divine Persons in one God (in light of last week’s Trinity Sunday feast).
Today, however, is also a special feast day—it’s the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. All of us are dependent on the heav-enly Eucharist which is truly food for the soul. The Eucharistic Body of Jesus helped sustain St. Patrick in his 29 years of teaching and laying the Catholic foundations in Ireland and all of Western Europe. This same Body of Christ is also sustaining me in my priestly formation as I’m entering my sixth year at St. Charles Bor-romeo Seminary. And for those parishioners who are not able to come to Mass but are making an act of spiritual communion, our Eucharistic Jesus is spiritually nourishing you as He unites all of us to the Mystical Body of Christ. Whoever eats this bread will live forever—Jesus’ promise remains engraved on our hearts, and amid all of the trials we have encountered thus far, these words have continued to give us incredible resilience and strength! In Christ,
Ryan Nguyen
