Who We Served in 2017

“This is the nicest thing someone’s ever done for me.”

Barbara Kurtz, homeowner

HELPING GIVES HOPE

Driving up to the home of Barbara Kurtz during summer camp was a thrilling sight.Imagine a front yard with a ground crew of 4 high-schoolers picking up shingles while another

8 to 10 are doing “demo” by ripping off old shingles and tarpaper. Barbara is a single woman and a good Christian whosehouse was in need of critical repair after a difficult marriage anddivorce. Her pastor told her to contact Good Neighbors aftershe tried to fix the roof herself but found the repairs beyondwhat she could afford. By the way, Barbara herself workedalongside the teens as part of the ground crew and dispensedwater on one of the hottest weeks in July.

“Restoring Hope by Repairing Homes” is our tagline. Restoring hope occurs when ahomeowner can see beyond her current crisis and imagine a day when she will be in position

to help someone else. For the hundreds of Good Neighborvolunteers this hope looks like a reminder of the blessings thateach has and the anticipation of being useful in God’s handsto bring love and dignity to those in need.

If you are new to Good Neighbors, please read these pagesand consider your place in making a difference in Chester andNew Castle counties. If you are already a friend of this ministry,

we thank the Lord for bringing you into the family and we look forward to more days ofblessing others!

Donors and partners come in all shapes and sizes. We have many volunteers who give their timeand talent. This year we added 47 new donors AND we are adding new, younger partners whogive through our online method. We joyfully receive gifts of $25 and humbly receive gifts of$10,000 and more. Our generous God is so faithful and He allows us to participate in the graceof joyful giving. Paul reminds of this joy in 2 Corinthians 9:7 “ Each one must give as he hasdecided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

I am pleased to report that our board of directors has grown and we have strong representation from Delawareto match our expansion into New Castle County. This newly-configured board worked for several months todevelop a new strategic plan which you will see below. We focused in four major areas with eleven achievablegoals. This planning process will keep us focused and it helps us identify the needs for new people resources aswe work to improve everything we do.
