STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last” (Luke 13:30). With those words Jesus makes it clear to us that there are no lines, no privileges in heaven.
Today’s Gospel from the Book of Luke — in fact all of our readings for today, this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time — have to do with salvation. It is difficult to be faithful and Catholic without thinking about heaven on occasion, and the Lord and St. Paul often in his letters, remind us over and over that we are to be striving for that — that our thoughts should be as much on the next life as on this one. Yet when we hear that Gospel that the first will be last and the last will be first, we may think there is some lack of justice there.
Jesus does not state this as a definite. He actually is telling us that the first may be last and the last may be first. The truth is that it really is not important. Our faith, the Lord, our sense of stewardship repeatedly remind us that what we think is important on earth may not be important in heaven at all. There is a Greek proverb that says, “Being first is good, but being last is perfect.” We are all called to discipleship and we need to answer that call. Responding before someone else does not make us better, but responding is very important.

Prayer Ministry What’s Prayer Ministry ? Many popes have encouraged Catholics worldwide to be receptive to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The 50th Anniversary of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal will be celebrated in Rome in 2017. Many parishes throughout the world have healing masses, prayer meetings, healing prayer groups, Bible studies and Holy Spirit Seminars where the charisms are fluently practiced. In all of these ways, Catholics can learn more about the workings of the Holy Spirit. Oftentimes, these experiences change our lives by deepening our love for Scripture, receiving the sacraments regularly, and discovering a new‐found joy of participating in liturgy. Would you like to intensify your desire for a closer walk with the Lord? Come and let us pray with you for this spiritual outpouring of the Holy Spirit in your life!
Save the Date! The next Returning Catholics 7‐week Mini‐Series will begin on Wednesday evening, Sept 28, 2016 in the church Social Room. For information contact Carol Becker ([email protected] 858‐354‐7085) or Steve Diamond ([email protected] 858‐945‐7171)

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistes.org/english.htm
