WHY - Even Great Organisations Get it Wrong
Donald Douglas founded the Douglas Aircraft Company on July 22, 1921.
The company was highly successful and is most famous for the "DC" ("Douglas Commercial") series of commercial aircraft, including the Douglas DC-3.
In 1967 the company was forced to merge with McDonnell to form McDonnell Douglas Corp. The merger was the result of Douglas’s ongoing determination to evolve the DC4 aircraft and his failure to understand early on the implication of the jet engine.
On Design
“When the weight of the paper equals the
weight of the airplane, only then you can
go flying”
On Vision
"Dream no small dream; it lacks magic.
Dream large. Then make the dream real.”
WHY - Douglas Faced Two Issues
He was responsible for a large organisation similar to other organisations in Defence, Mining, Rail, Airlines, Tollways that are dependent on complex infrastructure and platforms to deliver their business purpose.
This responsibility required that he address two separate needs:
What was the best organisational form to deliver his company’s purpose and Vision in a changing competitive environment?
How should infrastructure and product lifecycles be managed to best deliver the company’s purpose?
Are we doing it right Are we doing the right thing X
WHAT – THE KOBOLD PURPOSE
Provide managers of complex programs and systems in Defence, Government and Industry with high quality Professional Business and Technical Services to support:
a SYSTEMS THINKING approach to the organisation, its environment and its products and services; and
a SYSTEMS ENGINEERING approach to the acquisition and management of infrastructure and platforms
In a manner that identifies and realises the best outcome for the client.
HOW – ORGANISATION AND SYSTEMS THINKING
Determining the organisational form to best deliver an infrastructure and platform intensive companies purpose and Vision is best done by taking a Systems Thinking approach.
Stafford Beer leveraged cybernetics, and in particular, the Law of Requisite Variety, to develop an organisational model that describes the necessary components of system for it to maintain its viability. He described this as the Viable System Model (VSM).
System 5: Ultimate authority, governance, identity System 4: Forward planning, strategy, innovation
System 3: Internal regulation, optimization, synergy
System 2: Communication, conflict resolution, stabilisation
System 1: Primary activities, operation, project teams, quasi-autonomous
