IN-DISCIPLINE is a travelling program that supports creation and diffusion of visual artists in a first triennial phase in Africa and then in other regions of the world.

Its particularity is to rely on one hand on Morocco and in particular on the city of Marrakesh as platform of international visibility, and on the other hand on structures strongly implicated in the promotion of arts and culture in the chosen countries.

The strength of this pilot phase is to combine research and laboratory time with moments of direct contact with professionals and with the international art market.

IN-DISCIPLINE is a project initiated by the Montresso* Foundation and carried out with the support of a consolidated network of partners with a strong foundation for the promotion of the arts and artists in Africa.

The adventure of Jardin Rouge began in 2007 and allowed us to accompany a dozen of foreign and world-renowned artists. In 10 years the project has gained recognition internationally. It is time now to provoke the meeting with the artists of the continent. The Dakar Biennial in 2016 was a start. IN-DISCIPLINE structures and organizes our will to open Jardin Rouge to artists from African countries, including Morocco. This opening on the continent is necessary as much as obvious. To discover, know and accompany more and more African artists and bring to the international what they have to say, to show.Jean Louis Haguenauer, Founder of the Montresso* Foundation

Just as IN-DISCIPLINE # 1 was built through the eyes of Dominique Zinkpè, visual artist and director of the Center, multidisciplinary cultural space of Abomey-Calavi in Cotonou, IN-DISCIPLINE is joined by a major figure of contemporary African art, in the person of Yacouba Konaté, curator, writer, art critic, professor of philosophy and curating. Amongh is many commitments, this fervent defender and connoisseur of contemporary African and Ivorian creation is a member of the Academy of Arts, Sciences and Cultures of Africa and Diasporas of Abidjan, director of the Rotonde des Arts Contemporains in the Nour-al-Hayat Gallery, Plateau, Abidjan. Like no other, he will accompany the dual approach of the program IN-DISCIPLINE, which beyond supporting a selection of young artists, aims to contribute to the development of the art market in Africa. After Cotonou, IN-DISCIPLINE connects to Marrakech one of the most dynamic African artistic scenes. Collectors, institutions and private foundations, established artists and young talents, cultural and public events make Abidjan a platform an effervescent platform. Through the support of five artists, IN-DISCIPLINE will highlight and make visible on the international scene the contemporary Ivorian creation.Khalid Tamer, Artistic advisor of the project

It is because the writings are multiple and essential, because embracing cultures and welcoming diversity is at the heart of the artistic will of the Montresso* Foundation that the IN-DISCIPLINE program is presented for its second edition. As a must-see platform for contemporary art, Ivory Coast will be honored this year. The line of this program is to explore in an open dialogue physical and intimate territories, to make the artistic residency a plastic and intellectual meeting where crossing points and tension are questionned. It is a question of bringing together the dose of boldness necessary to approach with hope and enthusiasm our plural and complex world. Marrakech will be the setting and the crossroads to develop this ambitious program by giving it a national and international momentum.IN-DISCIPLINE will be unveiled as part of the 1-54 contemporary art fair in February 2019 at the Montresso* Art Space (Marrakesh).Estelle Guilié, Artistic director of Jardin Rouge

ARMAND BOUA

Armand Boua was born in 1978 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Graduated from the National School of Fine Arts of Abidjan as well as of the Technical Center of Applied Arts, he lives and works in Abidjan. Armand Boua deals with human condition. His works thus reveal faces without forms of forgotten children, showing the violence that continues to characterize the political struggles in West Africa.

It is in Abidjan, the economic capital at the crossroads of urbanization and industrialization that the artist's sensitivity sharpens. His work on children is inspired by street scenes where urban migration creates ethnic, linguistic, cultural and social intricacies.

The confrontations that followed the controversial Ivorian presidential election at the end of 2010 greatly influenced Armand Boua's work. While the conflict was intensifying, many children were separated from their families in the midst of the political turmoil that invaded the capital. Attracted to densely populated areas in search of work, children find themselves marginalized and vulnerable to exploitation.

The compositions of Armand Boua stand out by a textured pictorial layer through the use of tar and acrylic used on recycled materials. Each layer is applied then torn off, stripped in order to let appear abstract forms. The stagings are, as the street is, deconstructed. All the originality of Armand Boua's work lies in the delicate balance between the violence of the execution and the delicate treatment of his subject.

The characters of Armand Boua embody both the victims of these crimes and symbols of hope. Through painting, the artist gives shape to the atrocities of everyday life: "I wanted to show their suffering, their way of life, so that people finally realize this painful reality that they claim not to see."

In the continuation of his work undertaken for nearly five years, the artist develops in the Jardin Rouge a series of striking portraits of street children in his hometown. If he has already treated this subject by painting on cardboard to remind the precarious support that these orphans use to sleep, this time Armand Boua uses local newspapers and magazines to make collages on canvases.

Armand Boua's works are part of the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The artist participated in 2005 in the exhibition 'Pangea II: New Art From Africa and Latin America' at the Saatchi Gallery in London and at the 9th edition of the Dak'art Biennale in 2010.

GOPAL DAGNOGO

Gopal Dagnogo was born in 1973 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

In 1991, Gopal Dagnogo moved to Bordeaux to study art. He returned to Africa six years later and settled in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to learn traditional bronze techniques. The artist lives and works in Paris today.

Real tributes to the banality of everyday life, the works of Gopal Dagnogo act as the tools of a reconciliation with the sacred. Memory, consciousness, confused images jostle each other, collide or sometimes isolate themselves.

Playing with superimposition, the painter invents and re-enchants a contemporary mythology which, beyond an obvious cultural syncretism underlines the inner paradoxes and contradictions of a world both more civilized and more violent.

In residence at Jardin Rouge Gopal is inspired by the light of Marrakech, the mosaic and its inhabitants in order to translate the realities of everyday life that he combines with his own.

The artist does not prepare in advance what he will paint, it is the painting that decides for him, he is only the instrument, the tool. In a second phase the artist performs a reflexive gesture and brings equilibrium and vibration to his whole creation. This spontaneity is expressed in the form of a meditative painting with a hybrid aestheticism.

The different elements of his canvases form so many levels of interpretation; it is not uncommon to see a hen, a bottle of Gordon's dry Gin, that echoes some ritual ceremonies in Africa, or shoes, an armchair, all arranged in a coherent mess. From chaos springs up life and from banality emanates the sacred.

Since 2010 Gopal has participated in numerous exhibitions in Africa, Europe, the USA or Asia. Recently he participated in the 11th and 12th Dakar Biennale in Senegal, Dak'Art (2014 and 2016), the 1st Biennial of Kampala in Uganda (2014), the 5th Maiden Tour Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan (2014).

Gopal has also been invited to various artist residency programs, including ART OMI New York (2014). Some of his works are part of public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Kuwait City, Kuwait.

YEANZI

Yéanzi was born in 1988 in Katiola, Ivory Coast.

Graduated with honors from the National School of Fine Arts in Abidjan in 2012, Yéanzi worked as a portraitist for a dozen years. He lives and works today in Bingerville, Ivory Coast.

The question of identity is at the heart of Yeanzi's work. Through the portrait, the artist implicitly reveals the personality of individuals with dual identities, regularly using assumed names. Such as the testimony of the mask they wear in society, Yéanzi gives their names to his works.

Since 2013, the artist has pursued a personal work using the plastic material that he melts, modifying his relationship to the genre: "plastic is one of the greatest scourge of our earth, it is a hot topic. Everyone can see what they feel, I wanted materials that speak to people, it refers to an environmental problem, it is part of our everyday life. I am also fascinated by fire, the flame that purifies, the light that illuminates the world."

Yéanzi collects stories but remains his first object of reflection, well conscious of living in a shifting world, to be "the object of all cultures he has rubbed shoulders with". Thus the identity is not absolute, as a moving concept, it is for the artist a permanent and perpetual quest because we can be brought to integrate another society, to espouse another vision, sometimes to deny the old one.

In residence at Jardin Rouge, Yéanzi, through the series "Colloquium" questions the concept of heritage, the form of amnesia associated with it and its importance in the construction of identity.

Yéanzi has received several awards and honors, including the diploma of honor of the National Order of Merit of Ivory Coast in 2012. In 2013, he is the winner of the "Guy Nairay Grand Prix" and the "Bene Hoane" award. His work was presented at the Rotonde des Arts Contemporains in 2012 and at the Donwahi Foundation in 2014 as part of the AAA exhibition (Abidjan Arts Actuels). In 2016, he participated in the collective exhibition "A private collection" as part of the Off of the 12th biennale of Dakar.

KONAN PASCAL

Pascal Konan was born in 1979 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Abidjan, Pascal Konan teaches today painting while practicing his artistic activity.

Staging the daily life of the inhabitants of Abidjan, the artist interprets a particular emotion, the one produced by African cities through their crowd and the exuberant profusion of sounds and smells that characterize them. Pascal Konan's whole approach lies both in the exaltation of a happy childhood spent in one of the suburbs of Abidjan, but also in the testimony of the precariousness of an Africa grappling with urbanity.

At Jardin Rouge Pascal Konan continues his work on the management of our cities through the use of different recovered materials. The issue of e-waste animates the artist who is working on giving a new life to these objects strewn on the Ivorian streets and more generally in West Africa, a dumping ground of the Western world. In Pascal Konan's studio for example we can see a planet obstructed by dark spots evoking the degradation of the ozone layer.

That same star made from bleached jeans draws our attention on the noxiousness of the products used in the clothing manufacture.

In a context where social divisions and the deterioration of the human condition are increasing, Pascal Konan advocates through his works "individual action as a means of concretizing humanism". Art as a social agitator is embodied through his works and questions how we build our cities by highlighting a public health problem.

Pascal Konan has been awarded several prizes and distinctions. In 2012, he won the UEMOA prize at the 10th biennale of DAK'ART. In 2014, the artist won the prize Christian Lattier granting him the opportunity to do a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Finally, an individual exhibition is dedicated to him at the Rotonde des Arts Contemporains in Abidjan in 2017.

SILUE JOACHIM

Kagnédjatou Joachim Silué was born in 1972 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, he is at the same time painter, sculptor and designer. He lives and works today in Modena, Italy.

Admiring the still lives of Joachim Silue, it is difficult not to see a tribute to life, to senses. Half way between painting and sculpture his works are composed of bitumen, wire or recycled wood whose materiality is palpable.

The artist gives importance to used elements that have absorbed a form of suffering, a story. The memory of his past animates him. Not without a certain elegance, the reduced palette composed of whites, blacks and beiges emphasizes the narrative presence of these raw materials of whom Joachim Silué tries to sublimate the last moments of life, as to grant them an ultimate function.

At Jardin Rouge Joachim Silué develops the series "Mental Slavery" and questions our submission to codes governed by the society. Echoing the myth of Narcissus, this insidious relationship of dependence is expressed especially through the recurring use of the comb or broken mirrors.

With a sensitive detachment, the artist shows us the drama of humanity. Hidden by an aesthetic refinement, the violence that characterizes it is all the more incisive.

Joachim Sltué has been teaching visual arts for several years at the Municipal Museum of Archeology, Ethnology and Medieval Art of Modena. In 2017 he participated in the exhibition "The Juices of Time" organized in the Pavilion of Ivory Coast for the 57th Venice Biennale.

" This opening on the continent is necessary as much obvious. Discover, know, accompany more and more African artists, and bring to the international what they have to say, to show. "

Jean Louis Haguenauer, Founder of Montresso*

" Through this precious collaboration between the CDG Foundation and the Montresso* Foundation, the Espace Expressions CDG continues its tradition of being a place for cultural exchange and the promotion of art in its various expressions. This initiative presents the creative approaches of these artists, which definitely close the door to the preconceived and reductive ideas of exoticism and the innocence of African art, which has also impacted Morocco with modernist and naive Orientalist tendencies. The CDG Foundation is proud to be associated with this project that highlights Beninese art and artists as well as their backgrounds and contributions to the enrichment and enhancement of African art. "

Dina Naciri, Chief Executive Officer CDG Foundation

" The example of the creation of Jardin Rouge of Marrakech, by the Montresso* Foundation is an initiative to encourage and promote. It is in this creative residency that the five Beninese artists spent two months producing their artistic works, exhibited for the first time in Rabat. "M. Mohcine Jazouli, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Forgein Affairs and International Cooperation, in Charge of African Cooperation

" Thanks to the IN-DISCIPLINE program launched by the Montresso* Foundation, Cotonou has been invited to Marrakech, through five of the most prolific artists of their generation. Benin is the first country invited for this three-year program. Barely born from their residence at Jardin Rouge, the works of our artists aroused unanimous admiration.
