MASS INTENTIONS

CALENDAR CLUB WINNERS

This past Tuesday, September 15th, the Church celebrated the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. It comes the day after the Church’s Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross. It is also the Octave (eighth day) after the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This memorial remembers the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Mother: 1.The prophecy of Simeon (St. Luke 2:34, 35); 2.The flight into Egypt (St. Matthew 2:13, 14); 3.The loss of the Child Jesus in the temple (St. Luke 2: 43-45); 4.The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross; 5.The Crucifixion; 6.The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross; and 7.The burial of Jesus. As important as this memorial is to the Universal Church, it has particular meaning for us here at St. Pius X. The Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows is an important Feast Day for the Servants of Mary who have served our parish and school over the last 60 years. We have truly been blessed by the many women of faith who have served us here at St. Pius X and St. Pius/St. Leo School. Currently we have Sr. Rosalie Riccobono our parish Liturgist who has been with St. Pius X for the last 10 years. We also have Sr. Roselma Legault who is a Resource Teacher Assistant in our school. Sr. Roselma came to us last year after Sr. Viola Miksch was forced to leave because of her health. Sr. Viola served our parish and school for over 40 years. A couple times a month I have mass at Immanuel Fontenelle where Sr. Viola currently lives. In the Gospel today the disciples are arguing amongst themselves as to who is the greatest. We are told that Jesus responds to their arguing in the following way, “’If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.’ Taking a child, he placed it in the their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, ‘Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.’” The sisters who have served our school in the past and those who continue to serve are certainly examples of what Jesus was talking about in the Gospel. For 60 years they have humbly served our parish and most importantly have served the children of this parish. They didn’t do it for money, prestige, or honor. They did it because of their love of God and love of God’s children. Sr. Viola doesn’t communicate much these days but when I mention St. Pius/St. Leo school she gets a big smile on her face. Her joy was always serving the children of our parishes and the memory of that continues to bring joy to her life. True joy comes to our lives through the service we are able to give to others, especially to those who are the most vulnerable. Our greatest desire is to be with the Lord forever. The way to achieve that is not to search for greatness here, but to serve others. Prayers: This week our nation welcomes Pope Francis. Please pray for this visit and also for the upcoming Synod on the Family that will occur when the Holy Father returns to Rome. The Parish will host a watching party in the Parish Center, Thursday, September 24th, as the Holy Father addresses congress. It is currently scheduled for 9:00 am CST. Come join other parishioners and watch the Holy Father on the big screen. Discussions with the Pastor: You are invited to come and visit with an idea, concern, question, or if you would just like to talk. Feel free to come alone or with others. This week I will be available Tuesday, September 22nd from 4:30 to 5:30 pm and Thursday, September 24th from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

St. Pius X/St. Leo School Joyce Gubbels, Principal

Key to the success of any school and its mission is that the school community is surrounded by supportive and involved parents who provide for their children a vital role of expecting them to do well and accomplish much as students. Parents need to be consistent in their expectations of their children’s work ethic and supportive in helping their children succeed when help is needed. We are pleased that we had 99% of our families present for our Open House held the evening of August 18th. This was an outstanding turnout of our families, the highest we can ever remember. We had a wonderful evening full of lots of excitement and joy. The students and their families were able to find their homerooms and to meet their teachers as well as visit many of the other parts of our school. We believe this helps all to be at ease the first day of school. People continue to be amazed as they see the classrooms all set up for effective learning environments. We are so blessed that in that last years we have built beautiful pre-school, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms as well as an outstanding science lab. Many families also took advantage of Blimpies Night in the cafeterias and helped with the serving and clean up. Kim Ramsey and Bob Nowaczyk, our Development Coordinators, did a great job of organizing this event. We had several parents who helped with the evening. We are so appreciative of the parents’ involvement. We are in the first quarter of the school year. We are so thankful for the tremendous involvement of, not only our parents, but, many parishioners and friends of our school community. What a gift you all are to St. Pius X / St. Leo School!!

September 20th is Catechetical Sunday! It is with gratitude that the catechists in the Sunday Preschool Program and the Wednesday Religious Education Program are highlighted for their ministry to the youth of our parish. “The sacred duty and the joy of each succeeding generation of Christian believers has been to hand on the deposit of faith that was first entrusted to the apostles by Christ himself.” National Directory for Catechesis, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, page 87 It is with joy that the following catechists assist parents with the sacred duty of handing on the deposit of faith to the next generation:

Pam Goebel – Sunday Preschool Patrick Kudlacek – Sunday Preschool Carrie Boynton – Sacramental Catechist Lauren Barry – Level 1 Catechist Katy Chattin – Level 2 Catechist Terri Preston – Level 2 Catechist Nella Brown – Level 3 Catechist Nyawuor Paljor – Level 3 Aide Cheri Bowe – Level 4 Catechist Kelsey Leick – Level 4 Catechist Mary Novotny – Level 5 Catechist Teddy Novotny – Level 5 Aide Christine Gonderinger – Level 6 Catechist Jenny Jeffrey – Level 7 Catechist Doug Goebel – Level 8 Catechist Jen Genzler – Level 8 Aide

Other ministers of catechesis who we honor on Catechetical Sunday include the teachers, aides and staff of St. Pius X/ St. Leo School, facilitators of the Baptism Class, RCIA, Discipleship Group Program, Youth Ministry, Catholic Social Teachings, Adults Faith Formation and Bible Study Programs. Parents, especially, are honored for their role as the primary and first catechists of their family. Catechetical Sunday is cause for celebration for the many who serve to hand on the deposit of faith.

Judy's Little Angels' Childcare is sponsoring a fundraiser for Ethan and all proceeds will go to his medical bills. Sunday, September 27th, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, at Sokol Auditorium 2234 S 13th St. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35) Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

This is our annual Hospitality Weekend. St. Pius has added quite a few new families since the beginning of 2015! Join us after Mass to help us welcome the new members of our parish. We will have coffee and refreshments, and take a little time to

get to know our newest parishioners, and give them a chance to get to know you. So be sure to get a name tag, have some refreshments, and show our new members what a great parish St. Pius X is!

Hospitality Weekend

AROUND OUR PARISH

A historic moment! You are invited to the St. Pius X Parish Center on September 24th to watch Pope Francis address a joint session of Congress. We will start at 9:00 am. Coffee and donuts will be provided. Please plan to join us! 2016 Calendar Club Tickets are now available in the narthex of the church and the parish office. 2016 is a leap year so each ticket will give you 366 chances to win (that’s less than 11 cents/chance!) A total of $20,000 will be given away. This is a fun way to support the work of the parish. Tickets also make great gifts! (Must be 18 to participate) Put completed stubs and money in an envelope marked “Calendar Club” and bring them to the parish office or place in the collection basket on the weekends. St. Pius X Women’s Organization will host its annual Wine Tasting on Saturday, October 3rd from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. This year it will be at the home of Jerry and Colleen Morrissey, 6031 Bridle Path. Come and enjoy wine and appetizers in the company of other parishioners. Bring your spouse, significant other, friends; all are welcome. Please calling Donna at 402 677-5324 to reserve your spot. Pay at the door ($10). For directions call 402 554-1768 or [email protected] Charitable gift annuities to benefit our Parish and/or School offer better rates than many certificates of deposit, provide a tax deduction, and are an excellent way to pass on our Catholic

heritage. To learn more about how charitable gift annuities may be established through our Parish or School Endowment Funds contact your attorney or accountant or call Bob Nowaczyk, SPSL's Development Coordinator, at 402-551-6667. Pius Catholic Social Teaching Team invites you to attend PRAISED BE: “Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home” Thursday, October 8th at 7:00 pm in the Parish Center Dr. Roger Bergman, Director of the Creighton University Peace and Justice Studies Program, will offer a presentation that has two aims: to acquaint participants with the main themes and perspectives of the encyclical, and to encourage personal reading and group discussion of the encyclical. We are bringing back the Women's Christmas Luncheon this year on December 5th. If anyone would like to be on the planning committee, there will be a meeting in the Parish Center on Wednesday, September 23rd at 7:00 pm. Baker's has changed the way they participate in C.A.R.E.
