Prayer to St. Gabriel for strength during suffering

Tradition says the Archangel comforted Jesus when he was suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane.

St. Gabriel is one of the few archangels mentioned by name in the Bible. He is recorded in the book of Daniel in the Old Testament as well as in the Gospels at the Annunciation, when he delivered the good news of Jesus’ birth to the Virgin Mary. He is often called the “angel of mercy,” because his few appearances in the Bible are matched with messages of conso-lation. Christian tradition claims that St. Gabriel is the angel who appeared to Jesus while he was suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane.

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.” And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. (Luke 22:42-43)

The Catholic Encyclopedia explains that, “Gabriel is mentioned only twice in the New Testament, but it is not un-reasonable to suppose with Christian tradition that it is he who … “strengthened” Our Lord in the garden (cf. the Hymn for Lauds on 24 March).” This tradition also corresponds with the name of “Gabriel,” which is translated as, “God is my strength.” Here is an adapted prayer from the The Prayer-book of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri that invokes St. Gabriel’s help in the midst of suffering. O Gabriel, might of God, who announced to the Virgin Mary the incarnation of the only Son of God, and in the garden consoled and strengthen Christ op-pressed with fear and sorrow; I give honor to you, O chosen Archangel, and humbly pray to you to be my advocate with Jesus Christ my Savior, and with Mary His Blessed Virgin Mother; in all my trials assist me, lest I be overcome by temptation and may I give praise and thanksgiving to my God in all things. Amen.

During times of great suffering, Christians have al-ways turned to God and those saints closest to him, in hopes that he will bring relief to his people.

Classes will be given by parents with guidance from Mariazinha, Liz and catechists. Children in grades 1-10 will receive a monthly package with weekly lessons and activities regarding each season of the Church. The Parish Office will provide all materials needed for parents to work with their child at home.

By Dr. Scott Hahn Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

26º Domingo do Tempo Comum A liturgia do 26º Domingo do Tempo Comum deixa claro que Deus chama todos os homens e mulheres a empenhar-se na construção desse mundo novo de justiça e de paz que Deus sonhou e que quer propor a todos os homens. Diante da proposta de Deus, nós podemos assumir duas atitudes: ou dizer "sim" a De-us e colaborar com Ele, ou escolher caminhos de egoísmo, de comodismo, de isolamento e demitirmo-nos do compromisso que Deus nos pede. A Palavra de Deus exorta-nos a um compromisso sério e coer-ente com Deus - um compromisso que signifique um empenho real e exigente na construção de um mundo novo, de justiça, de fraternidade, de paz. Na primeira leitura, o profeta Ezequiel convida os israelitas exilados na Babilónia a comprometerem-se de forma séria e consequente com Deus, sem ro-deios, sem evasivas, sem subterfúgios. Cada crente deve tomar consciência das consequências do seu compromisso com Deus e viver, com coerência, as implicações práticas da sua adesão a Jahwéh e à Ali-ança. O Evangelho diz como se concretiza o compromisso do crente com Deus... O "sim" que Deus nos pede não é uma declaração teórica de boas intenções, sem implicações práticas; mas é um compromisso firme, coerente, sério e exigente com o Reino, com os seus valores, com o seguimento de Jesus Cristo. O verdadeiro crente não é aquele que "dá boa im-pressão", que finge respeitar as regras e que tem um comportamento irrepreensível do ponto de vista das convenções sociais; mas é aquele que cumpre na re-alidade da vida a vontade de Deus. A segunda leitura apresenta aos cristãos de Filipos (e aos cristãos de todos os tempos e lugares) o exemplo de Cristo: apesar de ser Filho de Deus, Cristo não afirmou com arrogância e orgulho a sua condição divina, mas assumiu a realidade da fragilidade hu-mana, fazendo-se servidor dos homens para nos ensi-nar a suprema lição do amor, do serviço, da entrega total da vida por amor. Os cristãos são chamados por Deus a seguir Jesus e a viver do mesmo jeito, na en-trega total ao Pai e aos seus projectos. .

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) Echoing the complaint heard in last week's readings, today's First Reading again presents protests that God isn't fair. Why does He punish with death one who begins in virtue but falls into iniquity, while granting life to the wicked one who turns from sin? This is the question that Jesus takes up in the parable in today's Gospel. The first son represents the most heinous sinners of Jesus' day - tax collectors and prostitutes - who by their sin at first refuse to serve in the Lord's vine-yard, the kingdom. At the preaching of John the Bap-tist, they repented and did what is right and just. The second son represents Israel's leaders - who said they would serve God in the vineyard, but refused to be-lieve John when he told them they must produce good fruits as evidence of their repentance (see Mat-thew 3:8). Once again, this week's readings invite us to ponder the unfathomable ways of God's justice and mercy. He teaches His ways only to the humble, as we sing in today's Psalm. And in the Epistle today, Paul pre-sents Jesus as the model of that humility by which we come to know life's true path. Paul sings a beautiful hymn to the Incarnation. Un-like Adam, the first man, who in his pride grasped at being God, the New Adam, Jesus, humbled himself to become a slave, obedient even unto death on the cross (see Romans 5:14). In this He has shown sin-ners - each one of us - the way back to the Father. We can only come to God, to serve in His vineyard, the Church, by having that same attitude as Christ. This is what Israel's leaders lacked. In their vainglo-ry, they presumed their superiority - that they had no further need to hear God's Word or God's servants. But this is the way to death, as God tells Ezekiel to-day. We are always to be emptying ourselves, seek-ing forgiveness for our sins and frailties, confessing on bended knee that He is Lord, to the glory of the Father.
