HBMS Yes I Can! Award Recipient 2016

Each year, one student from each school can be selected to rep-

resent his school at the system-wide Yes I Can! Celebration.

On behalf of the Holcomb Bridge Middle School administration and

intellectual disabilities department, we’d like to inform the HBMS

community that Kweli Jordan is the winner of the Yes I Can!

Award for 2016!

Kweli was nominated for his progress in his academic skills, self-help

skills and more appropriate social skills. We are SO PROUD of his

growth this year.

Way to go, Kweli!

Holcomb Bridge Middle is excited to celebrate Ex-ceptional Children’s Week, March 7-11!

Since this is a short week for our students, we are going to celebrate all month long!

On March 9, Blaze Sports Organization came to Holcomb Bridge. During each PE class, BlazeSports program staff provided an inter-

active adaptive sports experience. Students watched a video on the Paralympic move-ment, had a discussion about inclusion, and participated in four Paralympic sports in-cluding sit volleyball, boccia, goalball, and wheelchair basketball. Holcomb Bridge stu-dents who participate in Adapted PE every day participated in these activities with their peers. What fun!!!

March 21, our Global Ambassador fundraiser begins. Students with disabilities will be selling Autism Awareness pens.

On March 22, people who use augmentative/alternative (AAC) devices to communicate will visit Holcomb Bridge. They will talk to students in their connections classes demon-strating how devices can be a person’s voice. We hope our students come away with the significance of communication for a person. There are plenty of students who attend Holcomb Bridge Middle that use communication devices. Talk to them in the hallway when you see them!

PARENTS: Come see our AAC Panel and Holcomb Bridge students communicate with their devices from 10:15- 11:30 in the Media Center.

On March 23, many of our students with disabilities will experience an interactive career exploration with service workers and businesses from our community.

March 24, our global ambassadors and all of the service provid-ers who support them at school will celebrate! Thank to our Teachers of students with disabilities, Speech/Language Thera-

pists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Adaptive Art

Teacher, Music Therapist, Adapted PE Coach and Assistive Tech-nology Support folks.

Dear Parents,

A s you may have heard from your son or daughter, the 8th

grade has set an ambitious goal for its spring semester PBL

(Project-based Learning) target. The entire grade-level is going to Six Flags! At least

that is our goal. We are planning to attend the math and science day at Six Flags on

May 13. But we don’t go if we can’t pay for it. For that, we need to raise (you guessed

it) money. So, to earn a “Golden Ticket” to Six Flags, our students must do their work

and participate in fundraising.

Throughout the PBL, students will need to individually complete a variety of stand-

ards-based projects and expectations in all of their core subject areas. In math, stu-

dents will creating or designing their own roller coasters using various slopes. Science

classes will create Rube Goldberg machines to demonstrate that like in roller coasters,

simple machines can be used in a variety of different ways. Social studies will deter-

mine the cost of the trip and how the grade level will raise the funds. And ELA stu-

dents are going to create an ad campaign and/or a commercial about the amusement

ride they developed.

But, of equal importance to meet their goal, they also need to raise the money. This as-

pect of the project is an integral part of the semester’s work- not only do they need to

plan, execute, and monitor their fundraising, but they also need to work towards the

goal TOGETHER. As a result, you may hear a lot from your son or daughter about

initiatives such as quarter wars, car washes, etc. We hope you will be enthusiastic sup-

porters of these efforts, since the students’ success will be directly tied to the level of

effort they put into the endeavor. We will also gratefully accept any contributions you

and your family would like to make to our Six Flags fund. However, we want to ensure

that you understand this is a grade-level goal. No individual tickets will be purchased

to the Six Flags Event unless enough money is raised to take all qualifiers- we are ask-

ing the students to innovate and fundraise as the first step in the process.

Thank you so much for your support and understanding. We can’t wait to see your

child’s wonderful work on this exciting goal! Please consider a donation to the fund;

we need your help. Send your donation to your child’s homeroom teacher. We accept

cash and checks made payable to Holcomb Bridge Middle. If you have a great fund-

raising idea, please share it with us. We will also be needing help implementing these

ideas. All volunteers are welcome!

As always, thank you for your support. Together we can do epic stuff!

FCS Charter System

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a Charter System? How is it different from a charter school?

Fulton County Schools became a Charter System in July of 2012. This means that the district and our

schools have flexibility from many state education laws. For example, state law dictates how much time

students must be in the classroom (“seat time”) and the certification requirements for teachers. Now

that Fulton County Schools is a Charter System, the district is allowed to set those (and many other)

rules for our schools. The district is also working to transition more of these decisions to the school lev-

el.

Charter schools are different from schools in a Charter System. Charter schools (otherwise known as

“start-up charter schools” or “conversion charter schools”) hire their own staff and often have to raise

money for a building. The principal in a charter school reports directly to the governing board of the

school. All of these stipulations are laid out in a contract between the charter school and the state and/

or local board of education. With a Charter System, the district has the contract with the state and

therefore the responsibilities for management and oversight remain with the elected system-level

school board – Fulton County Board of Education, in our case. Thus, Fulton County Board of Education

retains the authority for hiring and managing all school staff, maintaining facilities, and a few other key

responsibilities, while at the same time pushing a number of responsibilities down to the individual

schools.

2. What are School Governance Councils? What do the School Governance Councils do?

The School Governance Councils work with the principal on the long-term vision and strategy for the

school. They are responsible for approving the school’s strategic plan and the school budget recommen-

dations, as well as developing any requests for flexibility from state law or district policy (see previous

question). The School Governance Council is comprised of a mix of stakeholders from both the school

and the community:

• 3 parents (elected by parents/guardians)

• 2 teachers (elected by school employees)

• 2 school employees (appointed by principal)

• 2 community members (nominated by principal; approved by rest of Council)

Principal (non-voting member)

2 students (non-voting members; high school only)

3. When will new School Governance Council member begin to make decisions for the school?

New School Governance Council members elected in March will begin their two-year term of service on July 1, 2016.

4. When are School Governance Council elections?

Elections for the parent/guardian and teacher positions on the School Governance Council will be held from 8:00 am

on March 23- 5:00 pm on March 29, 2016. Parent/guardian representatives will be elected by the parents/guardians

of the school. Teacher representatives will be elected by the school’s employees.

All votes will be cast electronically through an online election system within the FCS portal and tallied by an external

vendor. All votes are anonymous. Parent/Guardian voters will use their Home Access Center (HAC) usernames and

passwords to vote for the parent/guardian representatives on the School Governance Council. School employees will

use their employee login information to vote for the teacher representatives on the Council. This system ensures only

those eligible to vote are able to vote and that eligible voters cannot vote more than once.

5. How do I sign up to run for a position on the School Governance Council?

The Candidate Declaration Period is open from February 16 – March 1, 2016. Candidates who

are interested in running for an elected position on the Council must complete a Candidate

Declaration Form. The Candidate Declaration Forms are available electronically on the Charter

System Website and in hard copy at the physical school location. Candidate Declaration Forms

may be completed and submitted electronically by accessing the Charter System Website or

completed in hard copy and returned to the Governance & Flexibility Department of Fulton

County Schools. The url to the Charter System elections site is

http://www.fultonschools.org/en/about/charter/Pages/electionresources.aspx.

6. As a charter system school, will our school get to hire our own teachers and principal? Will

we get to choose what students come to our school?

No. Charter System schools will not hire their principal or teachers. All staff are hired and managed by the district.

When a principal vacancy occurs, the School Governance Council may participate in the hiring process for the new

principals.

Charter System schools do not choose which students will attend their school. Unlike start-up charter schools and con-

version charter schools, Charter System schools cannot set attendance zones, admissions criteria, or lotteries for stu-

dent enrollment. The Fulton County Board of Education authorizes and maintains attendance zones for Charter Sys-

tem schools.

7. Can my child go to any school in the district?

No. The Charter System designation did not change the Fulton County attendance zone boundaries or allow for en-

rollment lotteries. Students are still geographically assigned to a “home” school with transportation provided only

to that school. Students interested in attending a school other than their “home” school should contact the Fulton

County Schools Student Assignment Office between January 1 and February 15 during the year prior to enrollment.

8. Where can I find more information about the Charter System?

Additional information on the Charter System can also be found on the Fulton County Website.

The link is http://www.fultonschools.org/en/about/charter.

Sistema Chárter

de las Escuelas del condado de Fulton

(FCS, según su sigla en inglés)

Preguntas frecuentes

http://www.fultonschools.org/en/about/charter/Pages/electionresources.aspx.

¿Vamos a

poder elegir cuáles alumnos podrán venir a nuestra escuela?

Attention Parents and Guardians!

Fulton County schools became a charter system in 2012. This means that the district receives a waiver from state education laws in exchange for increased accountability and autonomy at the school level. As a charter system, every school in Fulton County now has a School Governance Council comprised of parents, teachers, school em-ployees, and community members. The SGC plays a critical role in the success of each school, working with the school community to design innovative solutions to increase academic achievement that meet the unique needs of the school community.

To vote in the School Governance Elections this spring you will be required to log in to

our system using your Home Access ID and password.

__________________________________________________

Retrieving Your Home Access Center Account Information

You must come to the school with a picture ID to pick up your username and password if you have not done so already. Fulton County policy prohibits any usernames and passwords from being given over the phone or via email. You can pick up your login and password at any school where you have a child in attendance, and if you have multiple children in Fulton County Schools the school can combine all students into a single login.

Please note that if you want to vote in the School Governance Council elections this spring, you must have your own Home Access Center login information. Often family members will share a Home Access Center login instead of signing up individually (for example, husband and wife share a username and password). The voting system will only allow one vote per username so make sure to sign-up for your own username and password if you want to

vote in the elections.

Note to Prior Home Access Center users: The login and password you received last year is still active as long as you have at least one child enrolled in Fulton County Schools.

For more information on the Home Access Center, you can find detailed documentation on the Parent page of the Fulton County website.

We will also have Retired Deputy and Grill Master Extraordinaire Xavier Cherry grilling free

hotdogs for all attendees. Spiderman is also expected to make a guest appearance along with other

local celebrities.

Free bicycle helmets will be given to all youth participants and we will also have a prize drawing for

as many bicycles as we can raise prior to the event; we have two bicycles to give away already!!

Our supporting sponsors for this event are the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Georgia Bikes,

and the Georgia Dept. of Transportation Safe Routes to School.
