arlier this week the Blue Drop Report stated that Thaba Chweu Municipality is one of the small towns that has a huge water contamination problem. After Eseveral interviews and speaking to people in the know, it was found that this

is true. But it is also a fact that the tap water in town is drinkable. The biggest problem is the 'grey water' in Thaba Chweu Municipality, not specifically the tap water. “I do drink tap water at home, AfriForum has found that it is safe to drink after several tests,” said Mr Leon de Jager, chairman of AfriForum Lydenburg. He also stated that the quality of the drinking water is compiled by the total water management plan. And the Blue and Green Drop Reports are filed after testing the rivers and grey water (i.e. sewerage water running into the rivers). He said that, according to him, there is nothing wrong with the tap water. Thaba Chweu 'failed' its last Blue Drop Report. The water in our municipality has been ranked as the worst in Mpumalanga. The Blue Drop Report stated that the TCM water quality has dropped with 9% from 59% in 2011. According to an article in the national newspaper, Beeld, South Africa has 5.4 billion liters raw sewerage every day that is in the water system. Only 1.4 billion liters of this figure is correctly and legally handled. Thus 4 billion liters of raw sewerage flows into our dams and rivers. Water pollution is a punishable offence and carries a sentence of five years in prison or a fine of up to R5 million. There is huge mismanagement of water quality, sewerage systems and drinking water through lack of skilled personnel. Prof Laubscher of the WNNR tested water samples out of the Sterkspruit River last year near the caravan park. The organisms that live on the bottom of the river were found healthy. They found that E.coli bacteria were not active. To sum up the whole report and actual situation in Lydenburg: the rivers are in a horrible state and the sewerage works in a much uglier state, but the tap water is clean according to given standards. Take all the facts into consideration before deciding on whether you find tap water healthy enough to drink.

Understanding) meeting at Amani Boutique Hotel last week. This was the second meeting and it will take place quarterly to lead Lydenburg Mashishing

towards a better future.

HERE is good news for Lydenburg and its community after the signing of the the MOU (Memorandum of TUnderstanding) earlier this year.

A second meeting took place between the Lydenburg Business Chamber (LMBC) and the Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM) at Amani Boutique Hotel last week. All the parties are positive about a continuous effort to move forward in solving problems. The larger business community, Sterkspruit development representatives, mining sector and a representative of the National COGTA office, Mrs Marokane, were present. She will be the communications officer between COGTA, TCM and LMBC. These meetings will take place quarterly. Discussions have already taken place to appoint an engineer (funded by the mining sector) to help address the sewerage problems, water works and the pump stations. Mr Leon de Jager (LMBC) said: “The quicker a project is identified, the quicker results will be shown.” The MOU deals with co-operation between Government and Business in Thaba Chweu and is only the second such an agreement being signed in the country (The other between business in Aliwal North and the Maletswai Municipality).The initiative is fully endorsed by COGTA and the AHI.The THABA CHWEU BUSINESS FORUM is a membership driven organisation established to promote economic development in the TCM area.By Michelle Boshoff

Fed up of hooters blowing and scolding motorists, Barry went to the municipality requesting permission from the municipality to build two wheelchair ramps on the municipal sidewalk, along Voortrekker Street between Lydenburg and Greyling

Construction of wheelchair ramps -A good deed should not go unnoticed

Streets, including the portion bordering Lydenburg High School under the rail subway.The sidewalk is in good condition and ideal for wheelchair users, however with steps on both ends wheelchair users are stuck and forced to drive in the dangerous busy road.Barry, aware of the difficult financial situation of the municipality and even though in a wheelchair, was prepared to build the ramps at his own cost.The reason for the request is that the road is getting worse on a daily basis. New potholes appear as the big trucks cause havoc to the road, especially along the verge. Lydenburg's heat causes further damage as tar warms from the sun and craters simply appear, as the tar shifts under the weight of the passing trucks. In addition, sand banks and stones, glass fragments, dangerous steep angles along the edge makes the road verge dangerous for wheelchair users. This forces the wheelchair users to drive in the middle of the road, endangering the lives of the person in the wheelchair, plus motorists. But most importantly from a humane point, a wheelchair user has the right to safety and access, as per the constitution.The municipality granted permission and SPAR, hearing of the plan, immediately approved and proposed to pay the expense of the ramp as it serves the community.The problem facing a wheelchair user is the wheelchair has small front wheels. It is difficult to steer these wheels through potholes and uneven road surfaces. It is similar to pushing a pram or shopping trolley over bad paving and it's difficult keeping the trolley straight as the four wheels all seem to go in different directions. Do remember wheelchair users are paralyzed, so in addition a wheelchair user is unable to use either hand or foot.Wheelchairs have pneumatic tires and easily puncture. Who will help when the user experiences a puncture or even capsizes in a pothole?The benefits of the ramps: Wheelchair users are able to access and use the sidewalk. Constitutionally motorists and wheelchair users alike, have the right to safety and access, and the ramps will fulfil constitutional obligations. There was no financial cost to the municipality. The ramps were constructed in a safe manner both for wheelchair user, pedestrians and motorists. Disabled persons plus local labour was used in construction, thus benefitting the local economy. Construction time was less than two days ensuring minimal disruption to traffic.A huge thank you to Andre du Plooy en PW Luise of SPAR (the sponsors) and Ben Ehlers of BECP Brick n Pave (the contractor).
