• What is swine flu?
* Swine flu is a respiratory disease, caused by influenza type A virus which infects pigs.
* There are many types, and the infection is constantly changing.
* Until now it has not normally infected humans, but the latest form clearly does, and can be spread from person to person - probably through coughing and sneezing ( Airborne infection ).

How Does Swine Flu Spread?
• Person to person
– Coughing
– Sneezing
– Touching your mouth and nose after touching an object (which can have the virus on it).

How long can an infected person spread the swine flu to others?
– Contagious as long as they are symptomatic
– One day before and 7 days following the onset of illness.
– Children might be contagious for longer periods of time

CAN A PERSON GET SWINE FLU FROM EATING OR PREPARING PORK?
No, the virus is not spread by food. A person cannot get the virus from eating pork or pork products. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.
