Who was Joseph Grimaldi?

Joseph Grimaldi was a famous clown.

He was born in London in 1778, more than 200 years ago.Sample Slide

www.ks1resources.co.uk

He wore the famous white makeup and other clowns soon began to copy him so that they wore white makeup too.

He was the also first clown to colour his mouth and paint triangles on his cheeks.

Sample Slide

www.ks1resources.co.uk

Joseph Grimaldi had his portrait painted on an egg. Eggs with clown faces on them were kept as a record so that no other clown could copy their makeup designs.

Sample Slide

As other clowns copied his white face, they too made their faces more colourful .

Today, nearly 200 years after Joseph Grimaldi died, clowns still remember him on the first Sunday of every February as they get dressed up and attend a Church Service in his memory.
