Dear St. Pius X Community,

As a kid, I believed that we lived in a great country and that things would only get better. By the time I entered the seminary as a college sophomore, I had lived in four countries. I had been behind the iron curtain to East Germany; mostly Berlin and Prague in Czechoslovakia (gotta love the squiggly red line). I saw the way people lived and when there, I sensed a total lack of energy and excitement. My travels as an Air Force brat have given me what appears to be an odd perspective. My dad served, I served, many good friends served, and a few gave their lives. I totally support free speech. If you want to speak out, great. If you want to kneel, great. Just because you have the right doesn’t mean I will agree with you or the method of your exercising your free speech, but you have the right.

In today’s world I worry about the consequences. Where did they go? One of my first questions with this pandemic was how quickly fear allowed people to willingly give up their rights when there are processes in place that were totally ignored. The point is not to make a judgement as to whether what happened and what the government did was right or wrong, just that it happened and there was no uprising. I don’t think that would have happened 15 years ago. The other day someone said, “We need term limits.” WE HAVE THEM. Congress can get ousted every two years, a President every four years, and Senators every six years. VOTE, that is all it takes. Term limits to me would only support more apathy. I keep feeling like I am voting for the lesser of two evils. I want someone that I can get excited about. I am sad that it may not happen again in my lifetime. Our candidates may have great accomplishments, but for me are not what I hoped for. We do not have a candidate that we can endorse as a Catholic candidate. What kicked all this off was two teens saying to me that my generation has ruined the country for them, their children, and their grandchildren. It made me sad that they felt this way. Don’t say how could we have known a pandemic was coming; Bill Gates was talking about it very publicly and had a plan over 5 years ago. So what is the point of this so far purposeless rant? Last Sunday’s reading had the hope and the answer we need. Jesus told Peter that He will not let the nether world prevail against the Church. He also told him that whatever he did on earth would be taken care of in heaven. How is that the answer? I think we have gotten too busy and distracted. We stopped paying attention or thought that other people were better suited to fix things. I think we feel inadequate and that things are beyond us. We have to stop that, NOW. We need to be bold and realize that each of us being bold will not only

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER PAT make a difference, but it is what we are called to. Marianne WIlliamson said it much better than I ever could:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

We got ourselves here. We owe it to the next generations to be bold in our faith and reinsert God in all that we do! Start simply: pray before all meals, especially in public. When you pass a cemetery or an ambulance, pray for the people, make it obvious, sign yourself. Pray, pray, pray! We can do this, we have to do this!

Small Communities of Faith are up and running and you have not missed out. This will be an ongoing process and we will be constantly adding new communities as needed. Thanks to Nelly, Angie, and their crew for getting this going! This is an important step in the faith life of St. Pius X.

We are filling up the Masses with the new normal. We are going to be adjusting the seating a little to fit as many as safely as we can. I would like to encourage all those attending the more crowded Masses to please wear a mask. If the 10:15 AM Mass is as full as it was this week and last week again, we will talk about adding the noon Mass back into the schedule.

Holy Grounds is open Sunday mornings. There will be pastries after the 8 AM Mass and if they last, after the 10:15 AM. It is nice out in the courtyard to visit and get to reconnect with people, even if we are sitting over 6 ft. apart!

School is off to a great start. Kids are happy to be back. Another major medical group stated a week ago that the risk for kids is far outweighed by their need to be in the classroom. The system we developed over the summer with Summer Fun, VBS, and the youth conference is working as expected. Thanks again to all who have helped us get to this point.

ATTENTION ALL WOMEN OF ST. PIUS X

All women in our parish are invited to take part in the activities of the Women of St. Pius X. This group offers opportunities for women of all ages to befriend other parishioners while serving our parish community and enriching our spirituality. The group assists in sponsoring spiritual reflection events, a bake sale and rummage sale to support the parish, social events, Zumba, and appreci-ation events for our clergy, teachers, staff, and highschool seniors. SPY (St. Pius Youth): For all High School students, grades 9 - 12. We will meet in the Family Center on Sunday evenings starting September 13 from 3 - 4:30 PM. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM

REGISTRATION BEGINS We are offering traditional in classroom instruction this year. We are following the school safety guidelines provided by the Archdiocese of San Antonio. All classroom desks are socially distanced. All students will have their own "school bag" containing their supplies. All classrooms have HEPA filters and are cleaned and disinfected every evening after instruction. Classes for Kinder through 5th grade will be held on Sunday mornings 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM starting September 13. Please bring a copy of the child’s Birth Certificate and Baptismal Certificate if they will be receiving First Communion. The cost is $50.00 per child. If they are receiving their First Communion there is an additional $35.00 fee. You can register after all Masses this weekend. To register online and make a payment see the link below. Register for Confirmation

Confirmation classes will be held in person on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM starting September 13. It is for all high school students in need of receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is a two year faith formation course to prepare for this sacrament. The cost is $50 per child. You can register after all Masses this weekend. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, better known as RCIA, is a religious education program for adults. It is intended for:

• Persons in need of Baptism and initiation into the Roman Catholic Church.

• Persons baptized or initiated in another Christian tradition who desire to come into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

• Persons baptized in the Catholic Church who are in need of completing the first reception of the Sacraments of Initiation, whether Eucharist, Confirmation, or both.

We are currently working on the schedule and an online form. Our goal to start classes is September 23. We will have the option to attend virtually or in person. Social distancing will be practiced

Participants will have the opportunity to join a meeting room, mute/unmute audio, start/stop video, raise your hand, send private/group questions, and break out into small groups. Although this is not required, participants are encouraged to sign in to this trial meeting in order to be prepared to fully participate, limit disruptions, and have the best possible experience during the Day of Reflection. Participants will need to have their own laptop, desktop, tablet or cell phone capable of connecting to the Zoom website or downloading the Zoom App. Or, you can share a screen with a friend/family member who agrees to an in person arrangement. We urge anyone sharing screens to take reasonable measures to protect one another from potentially spreading the coronavirus.
