This annual course addresses a wide range of topics in anatomic pathology and explores new and evolving areas in the diagnosis and analysis of disease. It aims to provide the latest practical and theoretical information that will aid the practicing pathologist in solving those problems most often encountered in the anatomic pathology laboratory. An audience response system will facilitate questions and discussion. Optional interactive microscopy seminars and tutorials will provide ample additional opportunity for interaction with expert faculty.

OBJECTIVES The principal objective of this activity is to identify areas of diagnostic difficulties and challenges in everyday surgical pathology and cytopathology practice, and to provide expert insight on selected topics through different educational formats. Educational experience is further enhanced through collegial contact and one-on-one interaction throughout the course. The topics selected each year reflect areas in which substantial information and progress has been made (as identified through recent publications and other data-gathering efforts). The topics of discussion also focus on areas in which there is significant difficulty in interpretation of pathological features. In general terms, we expect that at the end of this course, the participants will be able to: n Identify common mistakes and pitfalls in the diagnosis of specific diseases

in everyday surgical pathology; n Recognize mimickers of specific diseases in each specialty and learn to

interpret special studies that will allow easier differential diagnosis; n Learn the pertinent histopathological characteristics of diseases to allow

unequivocal diagnosis; n Identify new and additional components of the pathology report that will

improve its clinical value; n Learn about the recent changes/modifications in the pathological classification

of diseases or lesions; n Understand how they can be more helpful to the clinicians or surgeons in the

management of patients with these diseases.

TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience for this course includes practicing pathologists, pathology residents and fellows, and diplomats or trainees in pathology.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The seminar is designed to present the audience a hands-on experience in diagnostic problems in everyday cytopathology practice and an update on recent developments in the use of special techniques in cytopathology. With more than 26 years of experience in Head and Neck and Endocrine Pathology, Dr. Lester D. R. Thompson worked for a decade at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (Washington, DC), in Otorhinolaryngic-Head and Neck Pathology, Endocrine Pathology and Immunohistochemistry (Chief of the divisions). He has continued as a consultant, research pathologist, lecturer at national and international conferences and is a widely published author and expert, who also serves on the WHO Editorial Board as well as the editorial board for many scientific journals.We are pleased to welcome Dr. Thompson as our 2020 Henry Moon Lecturer.

A TRIBUTE TO DR. ZALOUDEKCharles “Chuck” Zaloudek, MDAfter 27 years at UCSF, Charles “Chuck” Zaloudek is retiring. In tribute, the Saturday program is dedicated to gynecological pathology, including two special guest lecturers, Drs. Esther Oliva and Robert Soslow. Chuck is a graduate of UC Berkeley, The Johns Hopkins Medical School, Stanford University, and MD Anderson. After a stint as a military physician, Chuck pursued academic surgical pathology followed by private practice before joining UCSF. For nearly three decades he has been the pathologist’s pathologist, an international consultant in gynecologic pathology, author of many textbooks, including the WHO blue book, a popular lecturer and an admired teacher. He looks forward to enjoying his well-earned retirement with his wife Jane.
