Conventional machining is the most used manufacturing
technique in producing structures and forms with high
accuracy. The milling, turning and drilling tools used
must fulfi ll exacting demands to achieve this precision.
The form of the cutting edges is one important feature
with a large infl uence on the machining process |1|.
The cutting edges are located on the tip between the
tool’s rake and clearance surface (Fig. 2). Their radius is
typically between 3 and 50 μm. In addition to the radius,
the edge symmetry, the fl attening and the chipping
have a large infl uence on the machining process.

A fringe projection based 3D sensor was developed for this
measurement task by IOF with which the topography of the
cutting edge can be recorded (Fig.1). This development was
done within the scope of the “Application Centre Microoptical
Systems (amos)”. The geometry of the cutting edge can be
derived from this topography. The fringe projection sensor-
head allows measuring the cutting edge topography in a
volume of 700 x 500 x 50 μm³. The lateral resolution of 1.2 μm
enables the determination of edge rounding radii down to
3 μm with repeatability of the radius ≤ 1 μm. The recorded
surface topography of the cutting edge is processed with a
newly developed algorithm to determine the characteristic
parameters. The three-dimensional data of the edge is reduced
to a 2D cross-section through mathe matical methods. In this
way the infl uence of surface roughness and sensor noise on the
evaluation is reduced. The radius, the symmetry, the fl attening
and the chipping of the cutting edge are calculated from the
determined cross-section (Fig. 3).

durch mathematische Verfahren reduziert, wodurch der

die Auswertung vermindert wird. Aus dem ermittelten
Querschnitt werden der Radius, die Symmetrie, die
Abfl achung und die Schartigkeit berechnet (Abb. 3).
