• It uses the ‘simple past’ with ‘modal + base verb’

Verb + ing / to infinitive

When one verb is followed by another, the second verb can be either an infinitive or an –ing form.

Some verbs can be followed by either an infinitive, or an –ing form but with a change in meaning.

These are some of the most common ones.

I like watching old films on TV.

I like to wash up as soon as I finish eating

Something you love, your hobbie , for example

Something you want to do , a plan

She likes to go to the swimming pool on Monday , she can’t go on Saturday

– I like getting up early in summer– I hate dancing, so don't ask me to – I prefer walking to taking the bus– Would you like to come with me?– I love to take part in a musical

They express liking if they are followed by a gerund

If they are followed by an infinitive they express wishes ( deseos)

COULD / CAN / BE ABLE TO

• We have studied that modal verb CAN is used in the present tense to talk about abilities we have nowadays or things we can do now.

My friend Guylene can sing very well, she has a beautiful voice
