The Future Is In Our Hands...
It only seems like yesterday that we were returning to the Academy after the summer break and such is the pace of life here at Mounts Bay, I am amazed at the amount of things we have already achieved in this half term.
This week we have had a distinctly international flavour to the Academy, as we welcomed students from our European Erasmus+ partner schools in Germany, Spain and The Netherlands to enjoy a week exploring the future in our FutureFest. The students were asked ‘will the future be a Utopia or Dystopia’? Would they own the future or would the future own them?

Welcoming Our Colleagues
Our High Performance Learning Curriculum is inspired from the latest neurological and psychological research, which is proving that most children are capable of reaching high levels of performance that were previously associated only with the gifted and talented. A leading exponent of this is Deborah Eyre, who has just collaborated with an an award-winning journalist to produce a practical guide, which will be essential reading for parents, teachers and all those interested in helping children and young people to reach their full potential. We have ordered some copies that parents can borrow from the Imaginarium, so please take advantage of this great resource.
At Mounts Bay we encourage all of our students to have a voice and I am excited to confirm that we are going to be hosting the popular topical political debating programme “Question Time” on Thursday 29th November. This is not just a wonderful endorsement of the facilities we offer here but an amazing opportunity for 15 of our students to attend the technical rehearsal with David Dimbleby and take part in the whole experience.
Good Luck Mr Eddy
The Erasmus+ project brings together students from across Europe to share their thoughts, exchange cultures and provide a forum to investigate what their future might look like and give them the confidence to shape it.
It was also a fantastic opportunity for my colleagues and I to share some best practice with teachers from other leading schools. We were also able to demonstrate some of the successes we are having embedding our High Performance Learning.
Tickets for the event are strictly limited but if you would like to have your say, then please apply via the BBC website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006t1q9
Finally, I would like everyone to wish our own Mr Eddy good luck as he competes in this year’s Ironman World Championship Triathlon which takes place in Hawaii. If you want to support him, you can follow his progress online from 6.05pm on 13th October by following this link: https://www.tri247.com/kona/kona-2018/how-to-watch-ironman-world-championship-2018
FutureFest THE FUTURE IS IN OUR OWN HANDS
We have had a great week hosting our Ersamus+ FutureFest. Students took part in a range of projects looking at the future of our bodies, the economy and the environment. This included visits to the Eden Project and St Ives. They also had workshops on the role of digital technology in learning, as well as making and enjoying some delicious international cuisine. Ours is the first of five international collaborations and if you would like to see more about our project, it has its own website here: https://sites.google.com/mountsbay.org/erasmus2018
BE YOUR BEST
What Makes an Adventurer
During REAL Project this semester, Tom has been working on the 'What makes an adventurer?' project. It challenges
students’ views of what it means to be an adventurer and asks them to reflect on diverse examples of adventurers throughout history. The students need to choose an adventurer who inspires them and they are currently making a persuasive film to present their ideas. Tom was was asked to do a piece of research homework on what we mean by the term 'explorer'. Tom went well
beyond what was expected, as he produced a video that included interviews of what others believed the term to mean. The video was well edited and showed an impressive commitment to the task and the desire to produce a piece of learning that was the best he could do. Well done, Tom.

This week’s Teach WoW was 'Inspiring IT'. At MBA we believe we need to prepare students for the future and what better way to do this than by using the fabulous IT facilities we have at our finger tips.
Inspiring IT
In REAL Project students have been enjoying getting to grips with Raspberry Pi computers. They are learning to program a Raspberry Pi to take a sequence of photographs.
This week in MFL, students have been learning how to use their iPads in order to prepare for their speaking assessments. How frustrating is it when you are at home, trying to learn your French or Spanish and you cannot remember how it should sound? By typing in a piece of text and highlighting it, your iPad will read the text back to you, in a perfect French or Spanish accent. Ask your MFL teacher if you would like to be shown how to do this.
The fast track Music Technology students have been getting to grips with our new music software ‘Logic X’ which has recently been installed on the laptop. This is an industry standard piece of software used by sound engineers around the world. So far students have been composing their own drum patterns, synth patches and chord sequences exploring the sounds and effects that Logic has to offer. Next, the students will be exploring the in-built sampler and creating their own sample patches.
Last week 13 students from MBA, Mr Rodgers and Miss Osborne travelled to Mineral Point, Wisconsin, USA. The students
had been invited to perform and participate in the annual Cornish Festival held in the town. During the 1800s many Cornish miners took their technology and mining skills all around the world including the USA. ‘Mineral Point’, as the name suggests, was a site of rich ores and a place that the Cornish helped to found.
Each of the group was hosted by an
American family. The students were also paired with an American student, who took them on a tour of Mineral Point High School and then on to experience lessons. The American education system is significantly different to the UK and all the students found it a valuable and interesting experience.
On the Friday we went to ‘Mineral Point Opera House’ where we were going to perform our variety show. After a morning of rehearsals, the students performed to the entire Mineral Point Middle School and High School. It was a full house and many people had to stand. The students did a wonderful job and everyone really enjoyed the show.

American Cornish Festival
Saturday was the day of the Festival. We rehearsed again in the morning and then went around the town to participate in the Festival. There was “A Taste of Mineral
Point” at which local restaurants and cafes made their food, a pop up museum detailing the Cornish heritage of the town, groups telling stories, musicians playing traditional music and much more. Many visitors from across Wisconsin as well as other states were there and all enjoyed meeting real Cornish students and describing their own Cornish ancestry.
In the afternoon the students put on their show. If Friday’s performance was good, this performance was excellent. The students really stepped it up and were fantastic. The
variety show consisted of music, drama, stories, poetry and videos. Afterwards the students met the audience who passed on their appreciation and enjoyment of the show. Everyone was grateful we had come to take part in the Festival and thought the show was amazing. The students should be very proud of themselves as they did a wonderful job. Special thanks must go to Miss Osborne for all her hard work in producing the show.. The group in charge of the Cornish Festival have asked us to return in 2020 to put on another show, so if you would like to visit Mineral Point, perform at the Festival and have a wonderful time, please let Mr Rodgers know.
During their time in Mineral Point, students also saw a High School American Football game, a volleyball game, a performance of ‘Camelot’, visited a shopping mall, visited local museums and attractions and experienced the American education system first hand. On their way home students visited Chicago, marvelling at both the cityscape and delicious pizzas!

As part of the HPI English initiative, 19 students from MBA had the opportunity to hear from the published writer J.R. Carpenter, based in Plymouth.
The project involved two sessions. The first was a trip to the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro to explore their archives and have a look at some local literature and maps from the last century. This was then used as a stimulus for creative writing in the second session.
J.R. Carpenter has been exploring some of the creative possibilities of generating ‘Variable Narratives’, an innovative genre of writing in which the writing changes and adapts as it is being read! This first emerged in the 1950s but has become increasingly more ambitious with the developments in technology over recent decades.

Students valued the opportunity of exploring ‘behind the scenes’ in the museum and appreciated the
chance to ask a successful writer some questions relating to their journey to publishing their work.
My thanks to Miss Rule who supported the trip to Truro and who also helped with the second session on-site at MBA.
Hopefully some students from this group will also become published writers in the future!

“I really enjoyed Dark Skies because I learnt how to write a modern online story. It was fun because we got to let our creativity flow out! We learnt a lot about the mystery (a travel from Newlyn to Australia in a small boat) and how
some people used the stars to navigate. I also really enjoyed getting to look around the museum.” - Liviana
Grace took Charlie for a walk on Thursday. Charlie looked very smart in her new lead. It
is much heavier than her previous ones, but she still pulls! Charlie’s favourite pastimes are; pulling on her lead, hoovering the floor for titbits and chewing her lead. We were lucky with the weather as it had been raining extremely hard twenty minutes before we ventured out.

I had the opportunity to visit Culdrose recently, as my brother is based there. This gave me the chance to consider if I would like to possibly see it as a
career choice. I also had the pleasure of going up in a Merlin helicopter which circled St Michael’s Mount.
It was an amazing view and opened my eyes to a great future I could have if I want it.

The 24hr Gig takes place next week fromThursday 18th October 9am - Friday 19th October 9am.
Students are able to attend the event during the day for a £1 donation.
On Thursday Year 7 can attend during lesson 1, Year 8 lesson 2, Year 9 lesson 3 and Year 10 lesson 4.
The main event starts at 7pm in the Hall. There is a £3 entry fee and it is open to all.
Year 7 students have been working together to discuss the problems caused by marine litter. They used images collected as homework and moved around the classroom discussing the images and their initial feelings and reactions. Students were able to think of questions they would ask the photographer if they had the opportunity to. Through the sharing of ideas and feelings students developed a deeper understanding of the problems caused by marine litter.

BECREATIVE
This week the first half of Year 7 went out on their REAL Project trips.
Students were very excited to get to Porthcurno, Godrevy and Penzance Train Station.
After careful planning and preparation linked to their Essential Question ‘How do I capture the spirit of a place?’, they had a clear idea of what they needed to observe when on location.

During the visit, students engaged in drawing exercises, creative writing workshops and also carried out a photo shoot to document to the landscape around them. The students on the beach experienced a beautiful autumnal day with heavy grey clouds
met with intermittent bursts of sunshine. The students at Penzance station were there working the day before the very exciting visit from the Flying Scotsman.

Students have developed some beautiful outcomes already and we are very excited to see more of what they develop in the next few
lessons. They are making links between their own artistic preferences and the practice of established artists, contextualising their ideas in a very considered way.
Well done everyone! Brilliant work!

He has produced these refined photographic collages which draw on the traditions of early modernist photomontage and surrealism via contemporary fashion and advertising. Each using his own imagery they make a fabulous triptych of outcomes.

Introducing
Step 1Children always produce a set of well-written notes of all the modelled
examples in the video, as we want them to be expert note-takers and to revise before they try the quiz. Even If they know the material, they should still take notes as it is a good habit and ensures they are producing revision notes every week.
Step 2Children will always show their workings and mark all questions they
ever do. Even if they can do the question in their head they still need to show their workings, as that is part of being a great mathematician.

On Wednesday the Year 8 Rugby team competed in the County Festival at Penrice Academy on a warm, still perfect day for rugby.
The waterfall format meant the morning’s opponents were St Ives, Bodmin and Saltash who MBA beat 10-0, 25-0 and 15-0 respectively. Unfortunately, even though MBA won all three matches without conceding a try we were seeded 5th for the afternoon’s league - playing for 5th-8th place.
The first game of the afternoon, MBA lost to Newquay Tretherras 5-0 in a tight, end to end game. With a renewed attitude and enjoyment, MBA went on to beat Helston 25-0 and finally Truro School 25-0 in the two best performances of the day, to finish 6th overall in Cornwall.

On Monday 8th October MBA’s Year 8 Rugby team played Cape Cornwall School at home. Mounts Bay won the Match 10-2. Top try scorers were Leo, Levan and Jago, however everyone contributed to all of those tries. There was also some amazing
tackling and rucking taking place on the pitch. A good team try was when the Mounts Bay scrum won the ball against the head and Jago Matthews, acting as scrum half, picked up from the back of the scrum to run to the try line.

This week the Year 7 A and B Netball teams had a fixture against Humphry Davy School. It was great to see so many Year 7s representing and competing for the Academy.
The A team narrowly drew against Humphry Davy 2-2. For some of the players it was their first competitive match experience and they have learnt a lot from this game going forward into their next match next week. The girls maintained a high intensity throughout the whole match.
The B team had a 6-1 victory. The girls played well as a team, with good shooting and excellent defending and lots of interceptions being made in the Humphry Davy attacking third.
Well done to all of the players who represented the Academy

Over 230 Year 4-6 pupils from all over Penwith came to Mounts Bay Academy for the first cross country league fixture of the season on the 1st October.
The six races ranged from 1000-2000m, looping the bottom field up and around the cycling grass track. The atmosphere was electric when the runners passed the supporters and fellow runners. Thank you to all the primary schools and teachers who took part. We look forward to the next event at St Ives Rugby Club.
The MBA students who helped at the event were
superb. They provided fantastic support, marshalling, pacemaking and supporting every runner. They even ran beside nervous first timers and children struggling with the run. They really made the event.

The MBA swim team made the journey for the South West Swimming Gala held at Millfield School last Wednesday. We took five teams, including the junior boys, two intermediate girls’ teams and the seniors girls’ team, all of whom were a credit to themselves and the Academy throughout the day. All teams swam a freestyle and medley relay, more than holding their own amongst a very competitive field. The senior team swam an excellent medley relay coming second in the heat, which could see them placed at the top in the South West.
