PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Our planet is the one thing we all have in common

This week the national news has reminded everyone that the care of our planet is one of the most important things to young people.

You will have seen in the media that today many students up and down the country have been using their voice to protest against the damage that is being done to the world for which we are expecting them to take responsibility.

That is why we are so pleased that we have been able to team up with Pirate FM to assist them in their ‘Tonne of Tins’ appeal to help the food banks in Cornwall, that make such a difference to the community.

Our contribution to the debate was held in The Locker today, when students performed for their peers in support of the campaign.

Climate Action In The Locker

Our Valentine’s Day competition was an enormous success - well done to Mr Williams and his tutor group 7 Yellow. We will continue to accept donations of tins up until 26th February before taking our donation to Redruth to add to the final total..

Climate change is just one of the things at the heart of our Global Goals strategy. As an Academy we recognise that it is our duty to give our students the confidence to express their views and the tools to take responsibility for their communities.

They hope to raise awareness of their concerns under the ‘YouthStrike4Climate’ banner. Organisers and participants believe it will be the first time students in the UK have protested for more action on combating climate change.

Finally, we have some exciting developments to look forward to after half-term, including the launch of our new ‘AI Learning Platform’ and our innovative ‘MBA Passport to Success’.

The campaign organised by the UK Student Climate Network and the UK Youth Climate Coalition has asked British students to copy similar protests seen in Sweden, Belgium, Germany and Australia.

At Mounts Bay Academy we have many amazing spaces and places in which learning can and does take place.  This week we challenged the staff to think about how they could use these within their subject areas.

Changing Spaces and Places

The MFL team are currently busy updating their classrooms. The team are working on developing a 'teacher on the wall' where everything that is on display can be used by students to enhance their work. Over the next few lessons keep your eyes peeled for the new funky but informative tenses posters in all the languages classrooms. They were a big hit with Year 11 during Project Week.  

In science this week students have been learning about our solar system. They have been discussing the size comparison of planets and the

sun and also the distance between each planet and how far away they are from the sun. In the picture you can see part of this model. This demonstration had to be done in the corridor because even though it is scaled down a huge amount, it is still longer than a classroom!

The MBA ski trip recently travelled to Pila in the Acosta Valley in Italy. Students and staff arrived after a 24 hour overland journey to be greeted by blue skies and snowy slopes. The students were split into ability groups, with some taking on skiing and

others snowboarding.

The Beginners’ Groups headed off to ‘Baby Pila’ slopes.

“We had a fabulous first day on the mountain learning new skills and working hard to conquer our fears and try new activities.” - Sienna M

The more experienced groups headed for the more challenging slopes to refresh their skills and looked forward to tackling

fresh challenges during the week.

“We then went onto some red runs and had a right giggle! We bombed down the runs and could hear Niamh screaming from the top of the mountain!” - Lilly H and Elsa

While the Beginner Snowboarder Group got to grips with the equipment and new techniques required, the Advanced Group

got stuck in.

“To get our ski legs back we did some nice cruisy blue slopes and then for the rest of the time we did two red slopes, one was the steepest in Europe.” - Eddie and Jude

Each evening the teachers chose a few students to wear fluorescent yellow bibs that quoted our embarrassing moments.

The trip also allowed students to get a taste of Italian food, culture and language. They visited the local town and really enjoyed immersing themselves in the experience. On the Thursday evening the instructors visited the hotel for the presentation evening.

As the week went on the students’ skiing skills showed real progress, with students in all groups working hard and enjoying the

challenges. By the end of the week students were taking on challenges they could not have imagined at the beginning of the week.

“We went to the highest point of the mountain on black 27 where we were ready to ski gracefully down. At the top, most parts were quite icy but because of our amazing instructor we knew how to easily and carefully get down without any incidents.” - Jack C

The Year 8s decided to challenge Miss Walters with their new knowledge of Economics. She passed over the board

pen and let them do the teaching. They showed a brilliant understanding of the Economic Process and helped others who needed to refresh their learning.

Year 7 ELEMENT students have just started a new project. On Tuesday they went out and about the Academy site to find as much plastic

as they could. They then compared which plastics were recycled and which were not.

The next immunisations at MBA are for Years 8 and 9.

A follow up visit for immunisations will be on Wednesday 1st May for Year 8 girls, Year 9 girls and boys.

This week Year 7 had a fantastic entry point to this semester’s sport of Tag Rugby. We were very fortunate to have

international South African rugby player Thinus Delport to take the session. It was a great opportunity for the students to learn from a top level athlete. The session involved looking at a rugby player’s attacking movement, passing and how we can overcome a defender in a 2 versus 1 scenario. We also had our Year 8 Healthy Lifestyle Champions working with the Year 7

students. They are part of a project working with the Youth Sports Trust.

Things We Can Recycle at MBA

Old CandlesCandles you can no longer burn or have run out of wick will be recycled (all types accepted).

Bottle TopsThese will be sent to Lush to be recycled into containers they use for their products. Only small lids up to milk

bottle sized can be recycled.

Plastic BottlesThese will be recycled in school. They will be used to build a greenhouse, in science lessons and some will be passed onto a

primary school in the area who would like to build a greenhouse.

Crisp PacketsAny crisp packets can be sent in. Then they will be sent to TeraCycle. This earns us points and raising

money to spend on projects such as the polytunnel.

Oral Care ProductsThese will also be sent to TerraCycle earning points for MBA.

Drinks CansThese will be recycled in school. They will be used in experiments to show pressure. Fizzy drinks cans are ok,

but alcohol cans will not be accepted.

BatteriesThese will be sent to BatteryBack who recycle them.

Biscuits and Snack WrappersThese will be sent to TerraCycle.

NewspaperThese will be used in school either in the Science or Art Department.

Pet Food PackagingThese will be sent to TerraCycle. For every kg we send we will earn points.

International Year of the Periodic Table

Atomic Number 80

Not all elements in the periodic table have a symbol relating to their first few letters. Hg comes from Mercury’s Greek name which is hydrargyrum, which means ‘liquid silver’.Mercury is the only metal which is a liquid at room temperature. It was named after the fastest moving planet in the solar system. Mercury is a very toxic element. It can be used to make thermometers and the electrical switches used in

thermostats. 

2019 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT), marking the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table, which is an iconic image and a vital tool to all who learn and work in science at

all stages of their learning and careers.

During the course of the year we will be writing about some elements and what we do with them at the Academy and what they are used for in the ‘real world’.

The seedlings planted by students during Project Week are growing well. The polytunnel work will continue after half-term. If you would like to join us we meet on a Monday at the polytunnel at 3.20pm. Bring some wellies or old shoes, these can be

stored in the Science Prep Room during the day so you do not have to carry them around.

We will be finishing the compost bin area, clearing, adding more bark to the floor and starting to clear the area to the rear of the polytunnel. Once the polytunnel is covered the furniture made by students can be put in and our seedling will move in. These will also need repotting in the very near future!

Today I found a beautiful Camellia in Mandela Square. Camellias are a flowering plant originally found in eastern

and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east of Japan. They are one of the most popular winter and spring flowering shrubs in the U.K.

Nature Around the Academy

Last Friday was the eagerly-awaited CHESSCLUB CUP final between Harry and Liam who had been battling through the knock-out stages since September, beating

off fierce opposition along the way.  Liam started quickly and aggressively in the final and was close to an early check-mate, but Harry rallied and managed to expose some weaknesses in Liam's attack.  After a flurry of exchanges, Harry managed to corner Liam's King and force a relatively quick victory.  The next CUP will start in the Spring semester.  Thanks to Miss Gooding for baking a delicious chess cake which was quickly devoured by the hungry chess players.  Thanks also to Damien for filming the final.

CHESSCLUB takes place every Friday lunchtime in room 32.  Just pop along with your lunch, play some chess and join the CHESSCLUB LEAGUE!  For more information, visit the CHESSCLUB Firefly page.

Tassomai Top 20

The Tassomai App has been used by our Year 11 students as part of their revision in preparation for their Science GCSEs.

Feedback from previous year groups has been overwhelmingly positive and statistics have shown that if students complete more than 80% of the Tassomai course they could achieve one grade above their target! Keep up the good work!

The winner of this week’s £10 Amazon voucher is Sinead who made a whopping 2.7% progress last week and answered 806 questions with an accuracy of nearly 70%. Remember, 10 minutes of Tassomai a day, alongside other revision techniques WILL have a positive impact on your performance in May!

On Tuesday the Year 7 and 8 Netball ‘B’ teams went to compete in the Cornwall School Games Finals at Truro School. The tournament consisted of schools who had qualified for the County finals. The tournament format was quite different to what our teams

were accustomed to, as it used a versatility format. This meant that at half time and at the end of every game the players had to rotate to a different position in a set order, meaning throughout the tournament they played nearly every position. This meant the players had to be versatile and demonstrate a good understand of a wide range of positions in order for them to play effectively.

The Year 7 team’s first fixture was against Newquay Treviglas and they came away with a 2-1 win, which was a great start to the tournament. The games that

followed saw them draw to both Saltash and Richard Lander. Unfortunately on goal difference this meant the team finished 3rd in the group. They went through to the next round in the play offs and faced St Ives. The squad put on a great performance and there was some great shooting on court to take a 5-0 win, meaning they finished 7th in the County.

The Year 8 team’s first fixture against Falmouth took off with a great start, as they took victory

from their first game. The second match saw them take on Tretherras where the girls demonstrated a fantastic understanding of the game as a whole. Despite the players not playing in their regular positions, their resilience on court saw them take a 7-0 win. The final game was against Saltash and the players were on a great winning streak after the

previous two wins and took a 6-1 victory. After winning all of their pool games the team went through as group winners into the semi-final. The semi-final saw them face a strong Penryn team, but the netball being displayed on court was fantastic, the players worked hard to stick to their players in defence with great interceptions being made, which led to a 4-0 victory.

The team then qualified for the final which saw them once again face Falmouth. The team lost by one goal in the final and unfortunately the way the rotations of positions fell just was not the best combination against Falmouth, who they had previously

beaten earlier in the tournament. The girls finished 2nd in County and came away with silver medals. They should be very proud of their performance throughout the whole day and the way they demonstrated team work and resilience to playing a wide range of positions.

On 11th February 2019 Mounts Bay Academy faced Cape Cornwall School away. The game started of fast with a goal from Will. Isaac scored soon after that and Ethan scored next. Leo scored next followed by Isaac again. The score at half time was 5-0.

The second half started slower but we soon found our rhythm again. Leo scored first followed by Cam B. Soon after Kyle scored, followed by 3 goals by Issac. The last goal of the game was scored by Pablo. The game ended 11-0. 

Cam B, Ethan, Pablo, Will and Kyle all scored one goal each, Leo scored two and Isaac scored four. The Man of the Match was Pablo.

Year 9 win 1-0 at Cape Cornwall School

Over the last four weekends I took part in the Cornwall County Swimming Championships. I won the 13 year old girls’ competition as well as a

trophy, 19 medals, three current Nationally ranked times in Britain (top 25) and two Cornwall County Competition records for my 1500m and 400m.

I now have to convert my times over the next few months at the South West regional competitions in a long course pool (50m) out of Cornwall to qualify for the National swimming competition in July.

Girls Win 2-0 Against St Ives School

Four high performance pupils attended a Gifted and Talented day at Penwith College to enable us to do some fitness

testing, working on designing a suitable training programme and looking at our goals.

Overall the experience of this day was amazing as we explored our strengths and weaknesses, along with finding out the best way to improve our fitness in pursuit of our sporting goals.
