Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection
In today’s readings, we see the importance of reading and listening to the word of God. In our first reading, Ezra assembles the people and has the book of the law read to them, so that they may learn and understand what the Lord wants from them. And this should make them happy, “for rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength” (Neh 8:10).
St. Luke, in the prologue to his gospel, gives us his reasons for writing: “So that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received” (Lk 1:4)
Both readings are an invitation to read and listen attentively, with an open heart, seeking the message the Lord has for us. He teaches us love, humility, generosity, self-giving. In order to live his teachings, we need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in whose power Jesus goes forth “to proclaim liberty to captives...and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” (Lk 4:18,19). May we be open to his inspirations, so that we too may proclaim the Good News. God bless you!

Las lecturas de hoy nos muestran la importancia de leer y escuchar la palabra de Dios. En la primera, Ezra reúne al pueblo para que escuche la lectura del libro de la ley y comprendan lo que el Señor quiere de ellos. Esto debe producirles felicidad, “porque celebrar al Señor es nuestra fuerza” (Neh 8,10).
En el prólogo de su evangelio, San Lucas nos explica qué lo lleva a escribir: “para que veas la verdad de lo que se te ha enseñado” (Lc 1,4).
Ambas lecturas nos invitan a leer y escuchar con atención, con el corazón abierto a escuchar el mensaje que el Señor tiene para nosotros. Sus enseñanzas son amor, humildad, generosidad, entrega. Para vivirlas necesitamos la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, cuyo poder acompaña a Jesús a “anunciar la liberación a los cautivos (…) y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor” (Lc 4,18.19). Abramos nuestro corazón a sus inspiraciones para que también nosotros proclamemos la Buena Noticia. Que Dios los bendiga.

2019 Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive
(ABCD)
Hope has a name… Jesus. Where there is hope, there is faith. Where there is faith, miracles happen.
This weekend is ABCD Commitment Weekend. Every member of our
parish is called upon to support the work of Jesus made possible through
the annual appeal.
Through Christ, we can all make a difference, and it starts at home. Our
Archdiocese is made up Broward, Miami- Dade and Monroe Counties. This
is your faith community, home to more than a million brothers and sisters
in Christ. Each year, the ABCD raises funds to support our faith and help
improve the lives of those in need- in need of a message of love and hope.

Getting to Know the Saints Conozcamos a los Santos
ST. JOHN FRANCIS REGIS (1597-1640) — He entered the Society of Jesus at the age of 18 and worked as a preacher and catechist for children. He was ordained at the age of 34. Known for his simple, unpolished appearance and style of preaching, he showed a great preference for the poor, farmers, and laborers.
Regis established a hostel for former prostitutes and helped to train poor girls in trades that would allow them to support themselves with dignity, and establishing a granary to provide wheat and flour, medical care, and protection for those most in need.
Sensing his end was near, John Francis Regis spent days in retreat before beginning a new mission in La Louvesc, France, where he died on December 31, 1640.
He was canonized in 1737 and is honored as a patron saint of embroiderers and lace makers—the same skills taught to the poor girls he worked to protect and support.
SAN JUAN FRANCISCO REGIS (1597-1640) — Entró a la Compañía de Jesús a los 18 años y trabajó como predicador y catequista. Ordenado sacerdote a la edad de 34 años, fue conocido por su apariencia sencilla y su clara predicación, mostrando preferencia por los pobres, los campesinos y los trabajadores.

In our catechesis on the Lord’s Prayer, we now reflect on its very first words: “Our Father”. Saint Paul’s letters testify that
the earliest Christians, guided by the Holy Spirit, prayed using the Aramaic word for “father” that Jesus himself had used:
“Abba” (cf. Rom 8:15; Gal 4:6). At the beginning of the Lord’s Prayer, then, we hear an echo of the voice of Jesus himself, who teaches the disciples that to pray is to share in his own
intimate and trusting relationship with the Father. The parable of the prodigal son shows us most vividly how Jesus wants us to understand our heavenly Father and his infinite
love, mercy and forgiveness. Indeed, there is also something maternal about this love of the Father, which accompanies and nurtures the development of our new
life in Christ as his adoptive sons and daughters. All the newness of the Gospel, and the very heart of our prayer as Christians, is in some sense summed up in
the one word: “Abba”. Even in the most difficult times in our lives, may we never be afraid to turn in trust and confidence to the Father, praying in the words that
Jesus taught us: “Abba”, “Our Father”.

Audiencia General 16 de enero de 2019* En el “Padre nuestro” [observamos] que esta oración se centra en la palabra:
“Abba, Padre”. Esta expresión es tan importante para los cristianos que se ha
conservado en su forma original, escuchando en ella la misma voz de Jesús.
(…) El cristiano que ha conocido a Dios y ha escuchado su palabra no lo
considera como un tirano al que debe temer, sino que siente confianza y
afecto hacia él, como un niño en los brazos de su “papá”. La parábola del
padre misericordioso nos enseña el sentido de la palabra “abba” a través de
los sentimientos del hijo pródigo. La actitud de la figura del padre de esa
parábola, que abraza al hijo después de haberlo esperado por mucho tiempo,
nos recuerda el espíritu de la “madre”, que sigue amando y perdonando a los
hijos, aunque no lo merezcan.Para un cristiano, rezar es decir simplemente
“abba”. En cualquier momento de nuestra vida podemos encontrar la fuerza y
la alegría del corazón dirigiéndonos con confianza a nuestro Padre.
