Overview
Famous for their high-energy live shows and relentless touring schedule, !!! (pronounced Chk Chk Chk) have really focused their efforts on crafting an album with tighter song structures, and the results are stunning. The album, releasing via Warp on April 30, is titled THR!!!ER, and was produced by Jim Eno, the drummer from Spoon and one of the key forces behinds. Like many people, Jim was a fan of !!!’s live show, but he felt that they too often tried to capture these performances in the studio. Instead of trying to chase this feeling, Jim encouraged them to create a different type of excitement by using weirder sounds, inventing new dynamics within each song and introduc-ing unexpected changes. “They had this working flow that was a little rigid and I wanted to break them out of it,” says Jim.
Of the album title, guitarist Mario Andreoni says, “Over the course of many long van rides and post-coffee verbal riff sessions Thriller didn't merely come to represent the selling of a lot of records...it became synonymous with an artist(s) and/or genre(s) artistic high-water mark. INXS’ Kick is the Australian Thriller...Alanis's Jagged Little Pill is the Canadian Thriller...Wham’s Make It Big is the blow-dryer’s Thriller...every recording by the 13th Floor Elevators is the dosed-man's Thriller...Sister Ray by Velvet Underground is the Thriller of musical fever dreams. One day at the studio, Nic [Offer, vocalist] drew THR!!!ER on a napkin and I liked it...then we made our THR!!!ER.”

Perils From The Sea is the debut collaboration by The Album
Leaf 's multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle and Sun Kil Moon singer Mark Kozelek. The project began on Sept 11, 2011, when Kozelek, a fan and acquaintance of LaValle, asked Jimmy to co-write a song. LaValle, a long time admirer of Kozelek's work, said yes, and the track ' What Happened To My Brother' came together quickly. Pleased with the results, the two agreed to record an entire album. Kozelek and LaValle continued to work together over the following year, until Perils From The Sea was completed. For the album LaValle chose a more minimalist approach to the music than The Album Leaf 's large sonic soundscapes. The lyrics to the song, 'You Missed My Heart', Kozelek says were inspired by a nightmare he had in an Ontario hotel room. Kozelek's story-telling narratives playing against LaValle's hypnotic synth sounds and drums beats should come as a pleasant surprise to fans, and should serve as a great introduction to those previously unacquainted with these prolific and acclaimed artists.

Hands “Synesthesia”
CD / LP / Digital Download Selling Points:
+ First album on Kill Rock Stars + Extensive US tour in 2013
+ TIME Magazine’s “11 Bands You Don’t Know (But Should)” List
BIO:
Hands makes music like a rip tide, swirling in
overlapping loops and riffs, slowly enveloping you.
The group’s members – Geoff Halliday, Ryan
Sweeney, Sean Hess and Alex Staniloff – craft
their hypnotic sound from a single dropping note
that builds into a reverberating roar that crashes
over you like a wave. It’s a mesmerizing trick that
they pull off on their debut LP, Synesthesia.
Building off the success of their Massive Context
EP (Small Plates) released in 2012 and a 7” to be
released on White Iris in January, songs like
“Videolove” and “Trouble” show Hands’ innate
ability to blend instruments and electronics into a
deep texture that moves ethereally through
genres. Hands moves from rock to synth-pop to
skyrocketing stadium anthem, often within the
same song. The interplay of Sweeney’s esoteric
guitar riffs, Hess’ technical tempos, Staniloff’s
thumping bass and Halliday’s soaring vocals and
affected keyboards help Hands build a dynamic
atmosphere, where a lesser band would only
manage empty atmospherics. A relative newcomer
to the LA scene, Hands began as a two-piece from
Philadelphia before Halliday and Sweeney headed
west and added the low and thump of Hess and
Staniloff. The band made a mark on the scene
immediately, quickly playing packed shows across
the country including stops at SXSW, CMJ and
Deluna Fest, headlining Echo Park Rising,
sessions with Daytrotter, and a west coast jaunt
with Maps and Atlases. Hands’ ability to win over
fans with their feverish live show and dance-party-
ready sound has already earned them opening
spots for the likes of Deerhoof, DeVotchKa, Foster
the People, and Kimbra as well as playing shows
to sold out crowds at venues across LA.

Second records are a bitch (or, if “bitch” is too offensive, “notoriously hard to nail down,” No? We thought
about this one for 2 years - and even tried to make it a few times. Finally we got it right - meaning, we got it
to sound wrong exactly like us. If you listen closely, you can hear the rage, hope, disappointment, ritual
excess, love and anarchy that were in our personal and collective airspace during those years. There were
(and - we hope - will continue to be) several kinds of riots going on (“Lies My Body Told Me,” “Bread and
Roses”). And yes, the CD is “political,” (see “Avanti Popolo,” “Ain't Gonna Let Them Turn Me ‘Round”). But
what fun is raging against the machine if you can't also rage against the bar line and the tonal system (“Take
Five,” “Ritual Slaughter” “Your Turn”)?
The astute listener will note our wry comment on the contradictions of producing a recording during the
collapse of the industry which once paid for recordings to be produced ("We Are the Professionals,” “Masters
of the Internet” and the attached manifesto). The very astute listener with really expensive headphones may
hear the water pipes in the basement on Rivington and Allen where we recorded about half the tracks (the
guitar amp isolation booth looked a lot like a bathroom). Those searching for rigorously applied formal
constraints may have to wait. Ceramic Dogs just wanna have fun. - Marc Ribot

The new Zs lineup (Sam Hillmer, Greg Fox and Patrick Higgins) sounds very much like a new band, at least as
evidenced by the Grain EP. The two side-length tracks (coming in at a total of 42-minutes) bear the marks of Zs’
sound – repeated phrases, looped or played in situ; buried drones and harsh electronic tones – but it does sound
very much like a new band.
There’s an extended ambience to the album that trick perceptions of time. Glitches and waves that last only a
minute or three somehow feel as if they’ve gone on throughout the whole record. Something very mysterious goes on
within the grooves. Hillmer and Higgins (who also arranges Bach for guitar and has composed for the Mivos string
quartet) teamed up to create Part One of Grain while Greg Fox (Man Forever, Guardian Alien) built Part Two. The
album was beautifully mastered by Heba Kadry of the Lodge. It’s a great listen and it’s also an inventive segue.

ALESSI'S ARKTHE STILL LIFE NATIONAL RELEASE DATE CD/LP: 04.30.2013
Travel, adventure and personal revelation mark the new album by singer-
songwriter Alessi Laurent - Marke of Alessi’s Ark. The Still Life is a work
both lucid and heartbreakingly lovely, a sonic landscape that roams a
wide range of emotions, with (as the songwriter explains), “Nature and
love, as common threads”.
Now only 22, Laurent-Marke continues to explore. The last few years
have seen tours through England and across the Continent - supporting
artists including Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling, Villagers, and Laura
Veirs - with the young singer backed by a revolving cast of musical collaborators, her own ‘Alessi’s Ark.’ These
adventures fueled the creative inspiration for what would become The Still Life.
Her most recent release, 2011’s Time Travel, was praised by the press, with MOJO swooning, “The understated
arrangements suggest you’re listening to a woman with impeccable taste…”, and The Washington Post remarking,
“The quick-hit nature and variety of styles suggest many pleasant paths for Alessi’s Ark to travel in the future.”

CD/DIGITAL RELEASE APRIL 30
VINYL RELEASE TBA
Like a workaholic not fulfilled by his day job, Streetlight Manifesto's singer/songwriter/guitarist Toh Kay is set to release a companion album to his main band's soon to be released (and very much anticipated) full-length record. Streetlight's version is called "The Hands That Thieve", while the Toh Kay version of the record is "The Hand That Thieves." The same 10 songs make up both records, with the same chord progressions, the same lyrics and the same meanings, more or less. But that's where the similarities end. Despite his day job's hyperactive, multi-faceted energy, "The Hand That Thieves" is a laid back, late night collection of sounds, closer to Iron & Wine, Belle & Sebastian and Simon & Garfunkel than it is to Streetlight. The album features Toh fingerpicking a nylon string classical acoustic guitar, accompanied by an upright bass, brushed drums and the occasional harmony vocal for a very intimate and meditative vibe. Recorded by the singer himself at Pentimento's own recording studio, the album is a perfect example of less being more; the recording and mixing capture the sounds of three people in a room, quietly playing wooden instruments, captured with no effects and virtually non-existent production. This Spring, Toh Kay will be joining The Revival Tour lead by Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music, then continuing with a headlining North American tour with his newly formed trio along for the ride.

Sister Crayon released their debut album, Bellow, in early 2011. The record received high praise from critics, citing Lopez’s ability to “make an impression on the mainstream” (BBC). With radio and television support, Bellow helped introduce Sister Crayon to the world at large and gleaned a loyal fan base that continues to grow. Since their debut, Lopez and Fernandez have worked relentlessly to reinvent the project, with the focus shifting back towards its founding members. The two women have honed in on the electronic side of things, centering more on Lopez’s powerful, diverse vocal range while utilizing heavy beats and haunting melodies. Following a 7” release with the band Warpaint for a David Bowie compilation, Sister Crayon !"#"$%"&'()"'*+%,-+".'/0'+1'23425'6'%"!+"%'78'97:"!%;'.)"'/0'%)7<9$%"&'.)"'=!7>"9.?%'@-#.+8$!+7-%'+1A-"19"%'ranging from Sufjan Stevens to Bill Withers.
Having toured nationally for most of 2012 with the likes of Built to Spill, The Album Leaf and Maps & Atlases, Sister Crayon went into the studio in late September to record the Cynic EP. Produced by Wes Jones, the EP was completed over the course of a weekend at Hangar Studios in Northern California. During the last day of recording, Lopez, Fernandez and Jones wrote and recorded the song “Meager Leavings” in one sitting. It was during that experimental session with vintage synths and a variety of drum machines that Lopez and Fernandez finally felt they had discovered the direction they were after all along. Lopez says the song is a confessional ode to her past and describes it as a prelude to the project’s new sound on the upcoming full-length.
The Cynic EP is at times raw and inconsolable, inspired by Lopez’s absent father and daily frustrations with the past. Sister Crayon’s new body of work is unapologetic in its intensity, allowing them to create their most revealing work to date. Upon the release of Cynic, Sister Crayon plans to unveil a fresh live sound with tour dates in the Spring while also writing new material for their second full-length, set to be released in late 2013.

Fire Records delve further in to the Australian underground with the signing of Melbourne-based four-piece Lower Plenty. Their transfixing LP 'Hard Rubbish' was voted Album of the Year 2012 on Aussie indie bible Mess + Noise. Named after a Melbourne suburb, Lower Plenty are comprised of some of the city's most talented musicians, the quartet of Daniel Twomey, Jensen Tjhung, Sarah Heyward and Al Montfort hail from various other bands such as Deaf Wish, Total Control, UV Race and The Focus. A departure from the harsher sounds of their other projects, Lower Plenty create beautifully melancholy, suburban-country music that's made (and often performed) while sitting around the kitchen table. Raw and delicate, 'Hard Rubbish' was recorded on eight-track reel-to-reel tape, often in just a single take. Their folk-tinged indie rock is flecked with experimentation whilst retaining a firm hold on some fantastically memorable melodies. With a non-traditional set-up of two guitars, drums and processed percussion with four vocals - Lower Plenty are set to take us on a very exciting ride. Both formats include the debut album ‘Mean’ released only on cassette in 2010.

Sometimes you have to look backwards to move forwards. In the case of Maceo Plex’s DJ Kicks mix, it’s case of looking back with a different perspective. While Maceo Plex’s mix is composed mainly of records that are 20-years old, it’s the tone of those records that is important. Eric Estornel, to use Plex’s real name, has certainly come up with a forward-thing set that doesn’t sound like much else out there. The whole mix is very dark,” agrees Estornel. “But it’s very varied as well. It’s really boring to stay one style. If you’re a lover of music, you don’t love one style. I think it’s important to travel through different styles.” The end result is an educa-tion, a lesson in how electronic music for the dancefloor is done with intelligence.
Crucially, Estornel has re-edited nearly every track on the mix. “Most of the tracks are really old, so they needed freshening up,” he says. “A lot of them were missing percussion, or some other element I thought they could use.” I went through my own stuff and previous DJ Kicks mixes. Y’know, research. I think it is the most important mix series so I wanted to make sure it was music that I really loved and I want to hear in five or ten years time. But isn’t it a bit of a contradiction, trying to bump electronic music out of a retro rut by looking to a different set of old records. Estornel reasons it thus: “A lot of the music on there is old, but basically has the sounds and the type of vibe that I think is missing these days. I went through a lot of new music. I didn’t want to select anything that everyone is playing at the moment and I definitely didn’t want to select anything that was already out on digital. The whole mix is comprised of vinyl only and is not going to be out on digital other than the DJ Kicks mix. To do that I had to go through a lot of new music and a lot of old music, and there wasn’t much new music that I really loved.
In time-honoured tradition, the mix contains a massive 10! exclusive tracks, the lead kicks track bing Galactic Cinema, a muscular and suitably off-world house chug. “I’m kind of known for a couple of big disco records and some really deep bassline house tracks, but that track much darker, but still pretty sexy and soulful. The whole thing is dark and futuristic.”“This mix is kind of my legacy, or, at least, part of it,” says Estornel, by way of a parting thought. “In ten or twenty years I’m going to want to go back and listen to this mix and I hope it’s still fresh.” Who knows. It sounds pretty timeless right now, though.

Young Philadelphia songstress Gina Sicilia exploded onto the scene in 2007,
as her debut CD, ALLOW ME TO CONFESS, was met with joyous acclaim by
fans and critics alike. She was heralded as a distinctive new voice in the Blues,
as well as an insightful songwriter and interpreter of neglected classics in the
Rhythm & Blues canon. In 2008 she was nominated for “Best New Artist
Debut” at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee, just as her sopho-
more release HEY SUGAR showcased her as a dynamic artist who could
transcend with ease into the worlds of Classic Country and Americana. Her
2011 release, CAN’T CONTROL MYSELF, demonstrated her unique ability to
e"ortlessly stitch together multiple genres through her songwriting, result-
ing in music that is a patchwork of Americana music, and just like her voice,
always authentic and always soulful.
This seaming-together of Americana music has become a trademark of Gina
Sicilia's craft, and is evident on her new 2013 release, IT WASN'T REAL,
produced by Grammy-winning producer Glenn Barratt in Philadelphia.
With this new release, Gina proves once again to be a
formidable talent, not only as a soulful, powerhouse vocalist
with an undeniably distinct vocal prowess , but as a gifted
songwriter whose writing is unrestricted and a deep re#ec-
tion of her love of music.
It is quite evident that Gina follows no rules when it comes to
her art. The new album incorporates a soulful mix of of South-
ern Gospel, Country, Jazz, Ska and even pop into her early
in#uences of Blues and R&B.
This CD features nine new Gina Sicilia compositions, as well as
one classic Blues masterpiece, borrowed from Etta James,
which demonstrates the sheer power, soul and ballsy attitude
of Gina's singing.
Now 28 years old, the remarkably talented Gina Sicilia continues to sing and create Americana
music on her own terms, never allowing herself to be trapped in by musical formulas or cliches.
Just like her intense passion for music, Gina’s voice grows stronger with each passing year, while
her songwriting matures through life experience and new inspirations. Although her art continues
to evolve, surprise and transform, no matter where Gina Sicilia decides to take her listeners next,
her unwavering loyalty to genuine, soulful music will always remain constant.
