Poultry Testing Information
Pullorum testing for all poultry, which includes chick-
ens and waterfowl (turkey and pigeons do not need this
test) being shown at Achievement Days and/or State
Fair will be held on June 17, 2017 beginning at 8:00
am. A location will be announced at a later date. YOU
MUST REGISTER THE NUMBER OF BIRDS
YOU WILL BE TESTING WITH JACKIE BY
JUNE 12TH BY 3 PM. This will be your only op-
portunity for testing. A blood sample will be drawn
from each bird on the day of the test. Please make sure
your birds are healthy and clean. Cost for testing will
be $2 per bird.
This testing will be held AFTER the date your birds
will have to be entered in 4HOnline. When you enter
the birds in 4HOnline they will need band numbers. At
the time of pullorum testing you will need those band
numbers for the testing forms. After the test, Carol
Erickson will provide you with a pullorum test form
which you will need to take to your vet when you go in
to get your health certificate. Please keep a copy of this
form for yourself as it may be requested at the shows.
If the birds you will be showing are from a hatchery, or
purchased from a business such as Runnings, the hatch-
ery should provide you with a document saying they
are pullorum free. If you purchased your hatchery
birds with a pullorum-free certificate from within the
90 days of Achievement Days and/or State Fair you
will not need to have your birds tested. Your vet will
need this document so they can provide you a health
certificate. A Runnings receipt is also accepta-
ble. (Again, keep a copy for your records.)

4-H Companion Animal Show Added to
South Dakota 4-H
The South Dakota 4-H Youth Development Program
has added a Companion Animal division to the 2017
South Dakota State Fair. This division will include the
following animals: ferrets, chinchillas, gerbils, ham-
sters, mice and rats, hedgehogs, pet rabbits (that are
disqualified from Rabbit Division), guinea pigs, and
cavies. With that being said, the Prairie Winds 4-H
Program will also offer a companion animal show at
the 2017 Prairie Winds 4-H Achievement Days. Ani-
mal divisions for the county show will mirror that of
the State Fair. Youth may participate with “all other
species” (i.e. fish, snakes, lizards, birds, etc.) in a post-
er presentation format. This means that youth must
create a poster with pictures of the animal and its hous-
ing. Youth should include care instructions and basic
information about the animal. Youth will then be ex-
pected to answer questions about their animal and
poster with the judge, but the animal will not be al-
lowed to physically be at the show.
This is an opportunity to expand the outreach of the
South Dakota 4-H Youth Development Program to all
youth who enjoy caring for and being around animals.
It’s clearly not feasible for urban - and even some
small town - youth to have larger animals, but this will
allow them the opportunity to express their passion and
knowledge in other areas of interest.
More information to come in next months 4-H news-
letter about the Companion Animal Show.

fice during the time that the office is
