Fifth Sunday of Easter May 2, 2021

Saint Joseph's special gift for

us from his fatherly heart! When Pope Francis wrote to us about Saint Joseph last December, he summoned us to reflect on the one man in histo-ry to whom God the Fa-ther would entrust his own Son as boy and man.

This weekend, as the universal church invokes the memory of St. Joseph as model and inter-cessor for all who labor, I once again invite all of us to rediscover St. Joseph as a man with "a father's heart." This is how Pope Francis de-scribed how Saint Joseph cared for Jesus in the many years - most of his life! - that he lived at home in Nazareth. He wrote: "St. Joseph re-minds us that those who appear hidden or in the shadows can play an incomparable role in the history of salvation. A word of recognition and of gratitude is due to them all." As Mary's hus-band and guardian of the son of God, St. Joseph turned "his human vocation to domestic love into a superhuman oblation of himself, his heart and all his abilities, a love placed at the service of the Messiah who was growing to maturity in his home." "In every situation, Joseph declared his own 'fiat,' like those of Mary at the Annunciation and Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. ...All this makes it clear that St. Joseph was called by God to serve the person and mission of Jesus directly through the exercise of his fatherhood and that, in this way, he cooperated in the fullness of time in the great mystery of salvation and is truly a minister of salvation." "In our own day, when employment has once more become a burning social issue, and unemployment at times reach-es record levels even in nations that for decades have enjoyed a certain degree of prosperity, there is a renewed need to appreciate the im-portance of dignified work, of which St. Joseph is an exemplary patron." A lot is being written today about the power of St. Joseph to help us on earth not only by his

example of quiet, unconditional service to God's will but also by his closeness to Jesus. Pope Francis declared a special gift that is available to all the faithful through St. Joseph: the gift of a plenary indulgence. This is a way the Church in her wisdom and compassion extends to people of faith a share in the mercy of Jesus who not only forgives sins through the sacraments but frees us also from the burden of guilt or "temporary punishment" that comes along with our sin. The Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican tribunal that deals with matters of conscience, issued a decree Dec. 8 stating that plenary indulgences will be granted to Catholics not only through prayer and penance, but also through acts of jus-tice, charity and piety dedicated to the foster fa-ther of Jesus. Among the conditions for receiv-ing an indulgence are a spirit detached from sin, receiving sacramental confession as soon as pos-sible, receiving Communion as soon as possible and praying for the Holy Father's intentions. The decree also highlighted several ways to ob-tain the indulgence throughout the year, includ-ing to those who "meditate on the prayer of the 'Our Father' for at least 30 minutes or take part in a spiritual retreat of at least one day that in-cludes a meditation on St. Joseph." “Those who, following the example of St. Jo-seph, will perform a corporal or spiritual work of mercy, will also be able to obtain the gift of the plenary indulgence.” Indulgences will also be granted to families and engaged couples who recite the rosary together and thus imitate the "same climate of communion, love and prayer lived in the Holy Family. "Other acts of devotion include entrusting one's daily activities and prayers for dignified employment to St. Joseph, reciting the litany or any "legitimately approved" prayer to St. Joseph. During this time of pandemic, the Apostolic Penitentiary also decreed that special indulgenc-es will be granted to the elderly, the sick and all those who "for legitimate reasons are prevented from leaving their home" by "reciting an act of piety in honor of St. Joseph and committed to fulfilling the conditions as soon as possible." God bless! Fr. John

Fifth Sunday of Easter May 2, 2021

Padre John

Fifth Sunday of Easter May 2, 2021

Reading I Acts 9:26-31 When Saul arrived in Jerusalem he tried to join the disci-ples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. Then Barnabas took charge of him and brought him to the apostles, and he reported to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus. He moved about freely with them in Jeru-salem, and spoke out boldly in the name of the Lord. He also spoke and debated with the Hellenists, but they tried to kill him. And when the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him on his way to Tarsus. The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers. Responsorial Psalm 22:26-27, 28, 30, 31-32 I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people. I will fulfill my vows before those who fear the LORD. The lowly shall eat their fill; they who seek the LORD shall praise him: “May your hearts live forever!” All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; all the families of the nations shall bow down be-fore him. To him alone shall bow down all who sleep in the earth; before him shall bend all who go down into the dust. And to him my soul shall live; my descendants shall serve him. Let the coming generation be told of the LORD that they may proclaim to a people yet to be born the justice he has shown. Reading II 1 Jn 3:18-24 Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. Now this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our hearts condemn, for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God and receive from him whatev-er we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us. Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit he gave us.

Alleluia Jn 15:4a, 5b R. Alleluia, alleluia. Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me will bear much fruit. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Jn 15:1-8 Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you.Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”

Fifth Sunday of Easter May 2, 2021

By Dr. Scott Hahn On the Vine 5th Sunday of Easter (Cycle B) Acts 9:26-31 Psalm 22:26-28, 30-32 1 John 3:18-24 John 15:1-8 In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us that He is the true vine that God intended Israel to be - the source of divine life and wisdom for the nations (see Sirach 24:17-24). In baptism, each of us was joined to Him by the Holy Spirit. As a branch grows from a tree, our souls are to draw life from Him, nourished by His word and the Eucharist. Paul, in today's First Reading, seeks to be grafted onto the visible expression of Christ the true vine - His Church. Once the chief persecutor of the Church, he encounters initial resistance and suspicion. But he is known by his fruits, by his powerful witness to the Lord working in his life (see Matthew 7:16-20). We too are commanded today to bear good fruits as His disciples, so that our lives give glory to God. Like Paul's life, our lives must bear witness to His goodness and mercy. Jesus cautions us, however, that if we're bearing fruit, we can expect that God will "prune" us - as a gardener trims and cuts back a plant so that it will grow stronger and bear even more fruit. He is teaching us today how to look at our sufferings and trials with the eyes of faith. We need to see our struggles as prunings, by which we are being disciplined and trained so that we can grow in holiness and bear fruits of righteousness (see Hebrews 12:4-11). We need to always remain rooted in Him, as today's Epistle tells us. We remain in Him by keeping His commandment of love, by pondering His words, letting them dwell richly in us (see Colossians 3:16), and by al-ways seeking to do what pleases Him. In everything we must be guided by humility, remembering that apart from Him we can do nothing. As we sing in today's Psalm, we must fulfill our vows, turning to the Lord in worship, proclaiming his praises, until all families come to know His justice in their lives. A service of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology www.SalvationHistory.com

I want to thank you for your continued support of the Thrift Shop. All the money raised here goes directly to the church as me and my staff are volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please see me or call me as noted above. We are a great team and enjoy what we do.

Again, thank you for your support and may God bless you.

Regards,

Wayne Doane, Manager 617-548-5626
