CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave some-thing behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion.

We pray for our sick parishioners, family and friends and those in need of healing of the body and soul.

CAMBIO Cuaresma es cambio y cambiar no es fácil. Para poder cambiar debemos dejar algo atrás. Hoy escuchamos acerca de un hombre muy viejo que decide responder al llamado de Dios. Abram atraviesa por una tremenda cantidad de cambios cuando todo lo deja y lo arriesga por la promesa de Dios. Jesús cambia, se transfigura, justo delante de los ojos de sus discípulos. Las escrituras en Cuaresma nos llaman a cambiar, a ser transfigurados, para que también nosotros pronto participemos en la gloria de Dios. ¿Qué nos pide Dios dejar atrás?

Our readings today describe turning points for those whom God has chosen. In Genesis, God calls Abram to leave his homeland, with the promise of forming a people in a new land. In the Gospel, the disciples see Jesus literally in a new light, the bright light of Jesus’ transfiguration. They begin to see Jesus, and themselves, in a new way. These are times when God presents a new way forward, providing new purpose and energy. Our lives too have their own turning points, where God is working (usually in less spectacular fashion) to lead us into fuller maturity, and into deeper unity with God and others. The road ahead, as with Abram, Jesus, and the disciples, may be long and difficult. Lent can be a time when we reflect upon these turning points in our past, and consider how God may be stirring something new in us today. BLEST TO BE A BLESSING The first eleven chapters of Genesis tell the story of the tragedy of human separation from God. But God has not given up on humanity. God is on a mission to reconcile and heal all of creation. In today’s reading from Genesis 12, we see the beginning of God’s new strategy: to begin with a single person (Abram, later renamed Abraham) and family and form them into a distinct people, so that all peoples may see God’s blessing in them, and share in this blessing. God’s chosen people are not selected simply to receive blessing, but to serve as examples and agents of blessing. God blesses people not only for their own benefit but for all. When we fully thank God, we also accept God’s call to bless others. We the Church receive God’s grace precisely so that we may share grace with others. LISTEN TO HIM In today’s Gospel describing Jesus’ transfiguration, we hear of the disciples’ vision of Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Peter, perhaps understandably, responds by trying to enshrine the moment by building tents for them. However, God interrupts and speaks words identical to those spoken at Jesus’ baptism: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” But here God adds, “listen to him.” Listening to God can take various forms. At some moments, as when we receive new insight or are deeply moved, we want to jump into action. Sometimes this is appropriate and necessary. But sometimes God interrupts our eagerness and calls us to further reflection or simply to listen in silence. Reflection and action are of course both essential to our faith journey. Yet we recall that God may often speak through silence. Contemplative practice, rich in tradition within our Catholic faith, reminds us that God invites us to an encounter within silence. In contemplative prayer, we open ourselves and simply wait upon God. We might encounter a divine Presence beyond words.

Nuestras lecturas de hoy describen momentos decisivos para aquellos a quienes Dios ha elegido. En Génesis, Dios llama a Abram a abandonar su tierra natal, con la promesa de formar un pueblo en una nueva tierra. En el Evangelio, los discípulos ven a Jesús literalmente con una nueva luz, la luz brillante de la transfiguración de Jesús. Comienzan a ver a Jesús y a ellos mismos de una manera nueva. Pedro, comprensiblemente, responde intentando consagrar el momento construyendo chozas para ellos. Sin embargo, Dios interrumpe y habla con palabras idénticas a las habladas en el bautismo de Jesús: “Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco”. Pero aquí, Dios añade “escúchenlo”. Escuchar a Dios puede tomar varias formas. En algunos momentos, así como cuando recibimos nueva luz o estamos profundamente conmovidos, queremos ir a la acción. SANTA FRANCISCA ROMANA (1384-1440) 9 de marzo

Francisca nació en una familia cristiana donde aprendió a amar a Dios y a los pobres. Contrajo nupcias muy joven, pero jamás abandonó su deseo de servir a los pobres, labor pastoral que fue apoyada por Lorenzo, su esposo. Además de ser ejemplar esposa y madre, oraba constantemente y salía del palacio vestida con ropas humildes para ir a visitar a los enfermos y llevar alimento a los pobres. Su amor por los marginados era tan grande que cuando azotaron inundaciones y pestes no dudó en abrir su palacio para que se convirtiera en hospital y refugio de damnificados, cuidando personalmente de ellos y ofreciéndoles alimento. Este amor por los pobres lo compartió con una de sus cuñadas, con quien no sólo practicó la caridad sino compartió el sueño de ser religiosa. Siendo esposa y madre fundó la comunidad de las Oblatas de María, cuyo carisma era vivir en el hogar sirviendo a los pobres. SAINT FRANCES OF ROME (1384-1440) March 9

Nature and human nature—plagues and wars—turned late medieval Rome into a living hell, particularly for the sick and poor. Frances, by birth and marriage well provided for, was a devoted wife and mother; but like Benedictine Oblates, who to this day “pray and work” while living with their families and working in the world, she joined like-minded laywomen friends in ministering to society’s most vulnerable. Frances’ charity was not only “hands on” but “in home.” Her palace became a hospital after the plague claimed two of her three children. When her husband’s death ended their loving marriage of forty years, Frances joined other widowed Oblates in community. In an interesting link to the United States, our nation’s premier religious congregation for women of color, the Oblate Sisters of Providence, in 1833 established bonds of spiritual communion with these Oblates of Saint Frances in Rome. 1. The use of the Communion cup is suspended temporarily. 2. Receive the Body of Christ in the hand . 3. Do not hold hands during the Our Father. 4. Effective immediately, Bishop Soto instructs the presiders and deacons at Mass to refrain from inviting the assembly to exchange the sign of peace. This will remain in effect until further notice. 5. Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion must cleanse their hands with an alcohol-based antiseptic before and after administering Holy Communion. This also applies to those who take Holy Communion to the home-bound.
