On March 8, the world celebrated International Wom-en’s Day. An event that was commemorated at the Vat-ican with a conference called “Voices of Faith.” It was an impressive event in which women from around the world spoke about their faith and how they saw their role in the Church. I was able to read here and there the contribution of these women to the discussion and it got me thinking about the role of women in our parish. Everyone but one member of the staff is a woman. So I guess we could say we are doing well, right? I think the answer is a little more complicated than that. What does it mean to live in a Christian community that values women not as token but as real contributors and partners in the preaching of the Gospel and the building of the Kingdom? That my sisters and brothers is the real question, and one that demands the faithful exami-nation of the past and at the same time creatively imag-ining the future. We have two thousand years of history, in which for the most part, men have reflected and determined the role of women in the Church. However, in a world that is beginning to reject toxic masculinity and in which the glass ceiling set for women is being shattered, the church has the obligation to ask herself, are we valuing and enhancing the role of women in the Church? This question is crucial because answering it correctly will open up new ways to preach the Gospel. It is our obli-gation, if we want to preach to our modern world, to let women be at the center stage of the evangelization and the decision-making in the Church. We see the im-portant role of women in the life of Jesus in the New Testament, imagine how a twenty-first century Mary Magdalene, or Virgin Mary would look like? I have no answer to these questions, but I do want us to start asking them. Maybe the lack of priestly vocation is a way in which the Spirit is inviting us to imagine new ministries and new roles in which power and responsi-bilities are shared. What it is definitely true is the fact that we are invited to pray and think about these ques-tions and attempt, without fear, to answer them. We cannot think of equality or feminism as modern con-cepts that have nothing to do with gospel values. I sug-gest that the Gospel has much to say about these things but we need to do the hard work of putting them in dialogue so the Church can be relevant to the wom-en of today. Today is not a day to celebrate women as mothers, or sisters, or wives, but as creatures made at the image of the invisible God, as equals, as partners. We cannot patronize women by using platitudes when we talk about them but we need to learn to respect the place they deserve in the Church.

Este evento se celebró en el Vaticano con una conferencia llamada "Voces de la fe." fue un evento im-presionante en el cual mujeres de diferentes partes del mundo hablaron acerca de su fe y de cómo veían su papel en la Iglesia.Yo estuve leyendo varios artículos sobre las contribuciones de estas mujeres en la dis-cusión y eso me hizo pensar en el papel de la mujer en nuestra parroquia. Entre los miembros del personal hay por lo menos una mujer. Así que supongo que po-dríamos decir que estamos haciéndolo bien, ¿verdad? Creo que la respuesta es un poco más complicado de lo que parece. ¿Qué significa vivir en una comunidad cristiana en la que valoran a la mujer no como símbolo sino como verdaderas colaboradoras en la predicación del Evan-gelio y la construcción de su reino? Hermanas y her-manos esta es una gran pregunta que exige a los fieles hacer un examen sobre el pasado y al mismo tiempo ser creativos e imaginar el futuro. Tenemos dos mil años de historia en la cual los hombres han reflejado y determinado el papel de la mujer en la Iglesia. Sin embargo, en un mundo que está empezando a rechazar la masculinidad tóxica y en la que el techo de cristal para las mujeres se daña, la Iglesia tiene la ob-ligación de preguntarse, ¿Estamos valorando el poten-cial y el papel de la mujer en la Iglesia? Esta pregunta es crucial, porque si contestamos correctamente esto abrirá nuevos caminos para la predicación del Evangelio. Y es nuestra obligación, si es que queremos predicar en un mundo moderno, para que las mujeres también se invo-lucren en la evangelización y tomen decisiones en la Iglesia. Hemos visto el importante papel de la mujer en la vida de Jesús en el Nuevo Testamento, imagínense cómo se verían María Magdalena, o la Virgen María en el siglo XXI?. No tengo respuesta a estas preguntas, pero si quiero que empecemos a preguntarnos. Quizás la falta de vocación sacerdotal es una forma en la que el Espíritu Santo nos invita a formar nuevos ministerios y nuevas funciones en las que el poder y las responsabilidades son compartidas. Lo que sin duda es cierto es el hecho de que se nos invita a orar y a reflexionar sobre estas preguntas e intentar sin miedo responderlas. No podemos pensar en la igualdad o el feminismo como conceptos modernos que no tienen nada que ver con los valores del Evangelio. Creo que el Evangelio tiene mu-cho más que decir acerca de estas cosas, pero tenemos que trabajar muy duro y ponerlos en práctica para que la Iglesia pueda ser relevante para las mujeres de hoy en dia. Hoy no es un día para celebrar a las mujeres como madres o hermanas, o esposas, pero como criaturas creadas a imagen y semejanza de Dios invisible, con igualdad y como compañeras. No podemos sustentar a la mujer mediante trivialidades cuando hablemos de el-las, pero debemos aprender a respetar el lugar que merecen en la Iglesia. Fr. Sergio Rivas

SAVED BY GOD’S LOVE

Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanks-giving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our

sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us.

We will be going to Oakridge Convalescent Home@9:30 a.m. (You can meet us there at 9:30 a.m.) and we will also be going to Aria Post Acute Care Home at 10:30 a.m. (You can also meet us there at 10:30 a.m.). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the interi-or anguish of Jesus, we are led to the Garden of Geth-semane, the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means “olive press,” and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can’t be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured—knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a “gethsemane,” and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scrip-ture says his own blood perspired from him, an image no one who understands olive oil production could miss. Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Je-rusalem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Do-minus Flevit, or “The Cry of the Lord,” built in a tear-drop shape in the mid-1950s. For centuries, the Fran-ciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sus-tain these precious sites.
