INSTRUCTIONHere are the step-by-step directions for what skillful readers do.

The Why?Powerful readers process persuasive texts every day in advertisements, newspaper editorials, and commentators on the news or talk shows. Therefore, powerful readers need to be able to evaluate the things that we read and recognize persuasive.

We have to ask ourselves, “is this text reliable? Is it able to be trusted, believed, and depended upon for true information?

Reliable texts – give information about a topic without letting any biases get in the way.

Biases – personal opinions or beliefso Biases make information incorrect or misleading.

Argument texts contain facts as well as opinions of the writer or others. Most of the time, readers read multiple texts in order to obtain ALL of the TRUE facts about a topic.

School starts every day at 8:05 a.m. I have to wake up very early to catch my bus. The bus comes at 7:00 a.m, and the route takes about one hour to complete. I think the town should add more buses so the routes can be shorter. It sure would be nice to sleep longer in the morning.

First and Last Name:_________________________________ Date: 1/30/2019 College: UNT DU VU Roberto Clemente was the finest athlete to grace the sport of baseball. I’m

proud to be named in his memory. He is a hero to all Latinos, like me.Clemente was born in Puerto Rico in 1934. He began playing for the

Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955. Clemente had a back injury from a 1954 car accident, so he often played in great pain. Still, he always gave his best effort. Clemente had a strong throwing arm and was an excellent batter. He helped the Pirates win the World Series twice, in 1960 and in 1971. In 1966, Clemente won the Most Valuable Player award. In 1972, he made his 3,000th hit. Only ten other men had achieved that many hits.

Clemente was not just a great baseball player; he was also the world’s most generous man. Every winter, he returned to Puerto Rico to teach baseball to the island’s youth. He also planned the building of a sports center for them. When an earthquake struck Nicaragua in 1972, Clemente collected supplies for the victims. Then he rented a cargo plane to deliver the supplies. Shortly after taking off, the plane crashed into the ocean, and Clemente drowned.

All sports fans mourned his death. Within three months, Clemente was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He was the first Latino to earn this honor.
