The program is a weeklong camp that is located at the Gold Coast (Bornhoffen) that is designed for youth future leaders (aged 14-25). Throughout the week, different adventure activities (creeking, hiking, camping and canoeing) were set, as well as theory lessons, teambuilding actives, and the ‘Magic Dinner’ (a fancy goodbye dinner at the facility). When the girls weren’t off having fun with their group members, they relaxed with the other participants in free time in the pool, basketball court, or dining hall, at lunch and dinner times. Overall the experience was amazing, and in some aspects life- changing: the two girls made a lot of new friends from across Queensland (that they still keep in contact with), learnt new things about different people and most importantly learnt how to be a better leader. If anyone has the opportunity to be a part of the PCYC SYLP program, take the offer! New friends, new experiences, and new leaderships skills, what more could anyone ask for? PCYC SYLP Leadership Camp

This year, two year 12 students, Zoe Jones-Drennen and Hannah Lacey, had the privilege to attend the PCYC SYLP Leadership Camp in January. The program is a weeklong camp that is located at the Gold Coast (Bornhoffen) that is designed for youth future

leaders (aged 14-25). Harmony Day Avoid Island Trip

On the 21

st – 23

rd January, myself and 6 other girls from across

Queensland (two from Mount Isa, two from Bundaberg and two from Bell) were invited on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to research and experience the hatching of baby flatback turtles on Avoid Island. We were accompanied on this trip by two Wonders of Science Ambassadors, a QTFN representative and leading marine scientist, Dr Nancy Fitzsimmon and her team, who all taught us important information on the flatback turtles that we were collecting data from and the human impacts that affect sea turtle’s lives and survival in the Australian region. On the island, we participated in digging up hatched nests, walks across the island to understand its geology and how protected it is, beach clean ups, weeding dangerous, introduced plants and of course, turtle research. We weighed, measured and notched each hatchling from the nests with the help of Nancy, then let all the turtles go to find their way to the ocean, which was very rewarding. I would like to thank the staff at RSC and the Wonders of Science program for making my stay at Avoid Island possible; it is an experience I will never forget!

Thomas Schefe Young Endeavour Recap

The 4th

of January saw me (Thomas Schefe) standing outside fleet

base east in Woolloomooloo Sydney waiting to board STS Young Endeavour. The ten-day voyage aboard the 44-metre-long sailing ship saw myself and 23 other youth crew (aged between 16-23), literally learn the ropes to sail the ship. The voyage saw us visiting places like Jervis Bay (ACT), going for a scenic walk on Deal Island (Tasmania), swinging off the rope swing in Refuge Cove (VIC), exploring the town of Cowes on Phillip Island (VIC), enjoying the Mussel Festival in Portarlington (VIC), and a visit to Williamstown, Melbourne (Vic) which was where the life changing experience ended. Throughout the voyage I had the opportunity to meet many other young Australians from all over the country who have become life-long friends, climb the 30-metre-tall mast, get to see parts of Australia that not many people have heard of let alone actually seen, and learn more about myself. The navy crew encouraged us to have no regrets and to view challenges as opportunities. If you are given the opportunity to have an experience like this I would recommend that you take it with both hands. I am extremely grateful to the Roma RSL for sponsoring me participate in this amazing experience.

On Tuesday, 5

th February, Senior Campus held their Stymie launch

day. We were excited to have Rachel Downie, founder of Stymie, at the school for the day, and she spoke with all students, and staff, about cybersafety and how to use Stymie. Rachel presented some very informative and thought provoking statements to students, and some great ‘tips’ on how to continue to keep themselves safe. All students now have access to the Stymie notification site, and it is as easy as following the steps below.
